eido
For the past month or so I have been working on getting a Windows 7/Snow Leopard dualboot running on my Dell Studio XPS 16 (1645) laptop. At this point I've got almost everything working as well as it is able to, but I'm looking for help with the last few things, here are the specs of my laptop: Intel i7 720QM ATI Radeon HD Mobility 4670 Intel PM55 mobo I have Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and Windows 7 running on the same HDD using a modified PC EFI 10.6 bootloader installed to the OS X drive. Heres what I need help with: Touchpad: Synaptics Touchpad -I tried various ApplePS2 controllers, keyboard works but no touchpad -I tried several different VoodooPS2 controllers, keyboard and touchpad both don't work at all My current, half-solution, was using the default ApplePS2 kext and deleting the Touchpad.kext within it, this forces the computer to recognize the touchpad as a mouse, allowing me to use it to move the cursor and touch-click, but no scrolling of any kind, which I'd really like Sleep: -I tried Sleepenabler.kext (the 10.6.4 version), but clicking sleep in SL does nothing... -I tried installing it both in Extra/Extensions/ and S/L/E -I tried deleting AppleLPC.kext from S/L/E, no luck So basically I can't use sleep at all at the moment, and really want a solution. Can anyone help me with these two final problems?

eido
I have this same laptop and am about to attempt my first hackentosh install. What method did you use to get it installed? Before you start you have to accept that you won't get QE/CI working on that video card, but you can still do most things on it without that. I installed 10.6 Snow Leopard using an Empire EFI boot disc, you can find the latest one here http://prasys.co.cc/ (no other boot disc I tried worked for me) It took me a long time to successfully update to 10.6.4, because every time I did it would hang on the boot (see this thread http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...update+problem), BUT, I finally figured out that after installing the combo update, you must go into the System/Library/Extensions/ Folder and delete every kext that starts with ATI, before you restart (I know it sounds crazy, but trust me), I also had to manually add a key to the FakeSMC kext, but I don't know if you'll have to as well After updating to 10.6.4 I got my audio working by installing the VoodooHDA prefpane attached (I believe its 64bit though, so don't expect it to work until you are booting in 64bit) My rebooting works with EVOreboot Voodoobattery got SL to recognize the battery and accurately measure its life Voodoopowermini enabled better control of the fan VoodooSDHC is to enable the SD card reader, haven't tested it yet though And the Dell Bluetooth Pkg should fix bluetooth, but haven't tested that either yet All these things are in the zip attached, You'll also need some basic kexts which are on the EmpireEFI discs (FakeSMC, PlatformUUID, etc) The only thing I recall needing to allow me to boot successfully in 64bit mode was a 64bit version of ForceLegacyRTC, which is also attached. After installing all of this, I installed PC EFI 10.6 using TonyMacx86's installer (found here http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/02/pc-...ported-by.html), and then replaced the binaries with the ones from the EmpireEFI disc, and I now can start up to PC EFI and boot OS X and windows 7. Its important to realize that the com.apple.boot.plist on the EmpireEFI disc has some boot commands that force 32bit mode, restrict the amount of RAM used, and forces a verbose boot, while these are helpful during the install process, be aware that they are active The webcam was recognize the whole time, but didn't work until I was able to boot into 10.6.4 not in safe mode, and then it worked fine without any additional work (I was using safe mode until I updated to 10.6.4 and deleted the ATI kexts, otherwise it didnt work) Also, by adding a Graphics Mode command to my com.apple.boot.plist to force 1920x1080x32 graphics mode, I got it to boot into 1400x1050x32 resolution, which is pretty good. Let me know if you have any other questions, or if you have any luck with the trackpad or sleep (look at my first post to see what I did for those) EDIT: after updating to 10.6.4 I also updated the kernel to a new 10.6.4 kernel, can't recall which one I downloaded, I think its vanilla... whatever it is, It's attached XPS_1645_Kexts.zip Updated_Kernel.zip
knowskills
I have noticed that when i boot with the Empire EFI boot disc my touch pad wont work as you say, but I do get 1440x1050. But if I boot with the ##### disc my touch pad works perfect even scrolling but I have 1024x786 resolution. eido
huh... thats very interesting. Can you post a link to the ##### disc you downloaded? I remember trying one or two of them when I first started and not being able to boot with them. I'm wondering if playing around with the kexts/kernels/binaries from the ##### and empireEFI discs will give us both the higher resolution and touchpad support... eido
I tried booting from the ##### disc, but it didnt give me any touchpad support.... I have however made a small breakthrough, I have the same functionality as before (moving touchpad and tap-clicking) except now its recognized as a touchpad. I did this by manually editing the touchpad prefpane in library/prefpanes. You have to find the info.plist within it (show package contents), and remove one line from it: "vendor id". That line tells the prefpane to only open for apple made touchpads, removing it allows the prefpane to open for me. So now I have the apple touchpad prefpane, and within it I can enable tap to click, dragging, and change the speed of the touchpad, but I don't have checkboxes or options for 2 finger scrolling or any gestures, anyone know how to enable that? also, knowskills, can you post your exact computer hardware, are our systems exactly alike? Oh also, on the Sleep front, by reinstalling a different sleepenabler, I now can click sleep and the screen goes black, but the backlight stays on and I can see the mouse cursor, and I cannot wake up the machine in any way and have to reboot, any ideas there? eido
I checked out that site... no special kexts or anything that look like they could solve my problems.... @Ghola - what kexts/strategies have you used to get trackpad and sleep functionality? or do you not have that? Also, on a sidenote, I tested my SD card reader using the voodooSDHC kext this weekend and it didn't work.... so add that to the list, though its definitely less of a priority

System Specs: Dell XPS 1640 Core 2 Duo P8600 4GB DDR3 1067 500GB Toshiba HDD 7200RPM ATI Radeon Mobility HD3670 That's a completely different system than OP's. It uses the older mobo and chipset and older graphics card. You can try searching for other XPS 16 users with C2D config like yours and see what works for them or you just try installing different distros yourself and report your findings back here. Good luck! I just bought a system similar to OP's and hopefully it will arrive soon so I can test mine out.
doggydog24
Hey guys, I have dell XPS 1647 with i5 and ATI HD 5730. I installed 10.6.3 retail version using ##### ATI. Almost everything works, but the resolution is 1028 x 768. And I installed a new broadcom wireless card and it works, but it keeps disconnecting every 10 mins and I have to restart the computer for it to work again. So, how do i get this graphic card to work? I used the ##### and it didn't work. I need more info. Touch pad works perfectly fine out of the box, two finger swipe etc. I need help with Graphic card and a lil bit on wifi. Thanks
