Hi everyone on IM,

I'm new to the board, but not a noob in PC or UNIX. Today I've got a nice situation/problem for you :P

Here are the specs of my (test-)system:

AMD Athlon64 X2 4000+

ASUS M3N78-PRO mainboard (nForce 730a chipset / GeForce 8300)

4x 1 GB Samsung DDR2-667 RAM

Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT / 512 MB

and really enough space left on hd devices :D

Running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4 with nawcom's 10.4.0 legacy kernel, updated from 10.6.3 Retail installation.

Status: CPU OK, SATA OK, internal Video: DISABLED, external Video OK, Ethernet NOT WORKING, Sound NOT WORKING.

Besides the integrated sound card, the most frustrating thing is: How to get the integrated Ethernet Controller working? This makes me crazy for the last two days!

Tried with several kexts, starting from vanilla nvenet.kext (which should work OOB) to nForceLAN.kext from this site. The craziest thing at the moment is: nvenet reports that the controller is a MCP78, which is correct [1][2]. nForceLAN reports, it is a MCP77. And that's not true, it's definitely a MCP78 integrated chipset. The ID of the controller is: 0x076010de.

Regardless of the name reported from the kexts, it is not working at the moment. With the different kexts it get's detected, but in System Preferences it's shown as "Not connected". It only says "Connected" when using nForceLAN with manual IP configuration. But then I can't ping anything or get an IP address via DHCP. Packets go in and out, but something is dropping them immediately.

I also tried to set the media sense manually, beginning at 10 Mbps half-duplex to 100 Mbps full-duplex with flow control. The network is a completely switched 100 Mbps net with Cat.7 in the walls and Cat.6 cables from PCs to wall mounts. Also switched the wall and switch ports, same problem. Network is OK and the controller is working in Linux properly.

My question: Who can point me out what to do next? Installing another kext, playing around with EFI strings, modifying the nForce kext ... Please tell me what to do or ask for more information :) I do not bite you :P

With digital greetings

Harbinger
