peach-os Posted June 24, 2010 Share Posted June 24, 2010 today I´ve got a request from a video company to make an offer for building a monster using the best soon available hardware to build a hackintosh for rendering videos using after effects. they suggested to use the fourthcoming evga w555 dual cpu board (which is overclockable!) and the new EX Nehalems. also they want two gtx 480 with the max of vram or the new ATI´s and 64GB of RAM, and a bunch od ssd´s for raids. I guess this is dream for everybody to build a machine like this.......or a nightmare please lets discuss about the sense making such a machine: problems, comparisons to a real mac, enhancements and upgrades. please no discussions about money- the budget for this project is really huge here I will add the new suggestions without proof of compability: 1. I have been trying to aim for a similar one..although more modest.. and i have been having the same problem. No OsX.. with Sr-2 , for the time being , at least. I haven't found anyone, not here, or anywhere else, for that matter.. that has been successful. Anyway... the main prob..still is _ graphic cards.. Even if one is able to get a GTX 295GTX.. or the new 460 GTX.. the trick is getting the SLI going, within OsX.. not to mention the Sata II HDDs or the full 48G RAM. There's a guy _ (AquaMac) that has been able to Flash some GTX GPUs, into Quadro cards.. but thats about it. I would really like to know that it would be 'safe' to get 1 card now.. for future 4 SLI with Snow Leopard. If u get any news ..like.. switching from BIOS.. to EFI.. let me know, pls. bonestonne Posted July 18, 2010 Share Posted July 18, 2010 Go ATI. Stop looking at nVidia. Coming from someone who only used nVidia cards for 7 years, that's an important thing. Take into consideration two "comparable" cards. nVidia 9600GT vs ATI 4850 1) Both are single slot coolers, both have Dual DVI, HDMI capabilities with audio, 512mb, neither are terribly power hungry, and they have similar core clocks. 2) nVidia 9600GT has 96 stream processors. ATI 4850 has 800. It really does make a difference with gaming and HD rendering. ATI supports physx processing too, it's just not their selling point. SLI vs Crossfire isn't really a battle, but I don't think either one will ever really exist in mac, ever. They aren't made for that sort of thing (primarily used in gaming). On a side note, I hope this computer will be running Autodesk Smoke, because anything less is a waste of time for their specs. Moving on, doing this on a brand new board may be way more a pain in the ass than expected, there wont be any kexts for it, so it'll be really buggy if it even works. With their current budget, why not spec out some monster Nehalem Mac Pro? that would give them 16 cores, beast out the graphics, and you can swap in SSD's for it. I think that would fit in their price range (if it really is "super high") and give them some insane performance. But thats also assuming Mac OS X supports Hyper-Threading... I can´t see too much space for it. I've got EVGA SR-2 Mobo, X5690 CPU, G-Skill 4GBx4 GB Ram running OSX 10.7.2. I am using this case its got enough room for drives, I couldn't fit it in both G5 and Mac pro cases as I had planned. I still have the two cases in empty. I've had two other people try to help me install it (as they have their own successes), or for whatever reason (communication wise) I (or they) could be leaving something out that may be needed to get Lion 10.7.x up and running. Can you or anyone help? I, (just like anyone else who has this similar SR-2 Mobo setup) have an amazing machine that is just waiting to have Lion 10.7.x up and running on it.
