ideneb Combo Update issue

OK, I'm starting to get a bit frustrated with trying to update from 10.5.6 to 10.5.8.

I've tried the BeerKexd rename Kernel method and using software update(probably screwed it up)

I've also tried the "carpet bombing method" LMAO using the ideneb combo update. using the Apple update , at least the installer finishes and makes my Hack unbootable

I think The biggest problem I'm having is with the iDeneb combo update. no matter what I try the installer does not finish. it hangs up somewhere towards the end of the process. then the only option I have is to force quit the installer. When I do this I am unable to do anything with the system except shut down leaving it unbootable. all the apps won't work including OSX86 tools so I cannot restore my kernel and extentions before shutting down. it's like the update is only partially finished so it's somewhere between both versions.....

Anyone else have this problem or have any ideas as to why the update won't finish?

Thanks,

-Mike

I get something similar every time I try to update.

I have Kalyway 10.5.2, and I have tried updating to 10.5.8, and 10.5.7, but both times yielded the same results.

They freeze about a quarter of the way through the Install, and I have to restart my computer, as neither my keyboard nor my mouse respond after they freeze. After rebooting, I get a kernel panic about my CPU being unsupported (Pentium 4 3.2GHz) and I have to reinstall Kalyway. I want to install my iLife stuff, but I have to be at atleast 10.5.6, and I can't update! Help!

Then you aren't using the Voodoo Kernel, or you didn't rename it to mach_kernel.voodoo, and/or you didn't edit com.apple.Boot.plist to load it.

Now, it freezes at about 14% while installing the combo update. What're your specs Michael?

Specs:

MoBo: Intel D865PERL

Processor: Pentium 4 3.2GHz

2GB RAM

Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS

I tried using the 9.2.0 SpeedStep kernel (in both regular mode and in safe mode) that came with Kalyway 10.5.2, and it freezes at 14%. I also tried using the 10.5.8 Voodoo Kernel in safe mode, I got a kernel panic when mounting the DMG for the update.

Am I using the wrong update? I'm getting it from the Apple website. Do I need to use a specially made one?

Thanks

If you get a kernel panic when mounting the update .dmg you didn't read this thread:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=148566

ie, seatbelt.kext and system.kext must match kernel version.

Kalyway released a modified 10.5.3 combo update that could be applied to the Kalyway 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 distros. I'm sure it's still out there.

Remember after installing the Kalyway update you have to boot with -update (or something, the updater comes with instructions anyway).

If you should decide to give up on Kalyway, a distro/hacked DVD I had the best result with on my 865/P4 system was JaS 10.5.4. I don't remember anymore what to select in Customize but I remember that it was easy to get it running.

iPC 10.5.6 Final is another one that worked flawlessly.

If you depend on proper CPU type injection, don't upgrade to Chameleon 2.0 RC4, it breaks CPU injection when using the Voodoo Kernel. Stick with RC3.

My Specs are in my siggy. My hack is a Dell 4400. The MB is made by Dell, suposedly with an Intel 945 chipset. My Processor is a 2.0 GHz P4 Prescott. FX 5200 Graphics card. USB sound adapter.

My issue with the combo update is a little different than yours.....It locks up the same but after I force it to quit, I can use my mouse and keyboard. all apps that I try to open, won't open but I can open "about this Mac" and it says 10.5.8.

I believe I can open my macintosh HD and browse the contents too. I wonder if I should just let it run for hours....Maybe it will eventually finish?

So, wait, I need to:

1: Boot using the Voodoo 9.5.8 kernel that I download and put it in the com.apple.Boot.plist, and all that stuff.

2: Install the update AFTER booting from the Voodoo kernel?

Or do I update using my regular kernel, and THEN boot from the Voodoo?

By install, do you mean, boot using the Voodoo kernel? Or...

I mean, I go into OSx86 tools, Install the new kernel, then reboot, then install the update? Or do I Go into OSx86 Tools, Install the new kernel, Install the update, then reboot?

If it's the latter, it won't work, as my update freezes at 14% every time I try it.

No, by install I mean install. :)

do I Go into OSx86 Tools, Install the new kernel, Install the update, then reboot?

Yes that's the general idea, except you should not use OSx86Tools as (if I recall correctly) it only drops the kernel at root. The update will then overwrite it with the vanilla kernel, which will of course not work on your system. That's why my guide says to rename the kernel to mach_kernel.voodoo (although you can give it any name you like, like for example, Lars). My guide is very clear on this, I don't see how you can miss it. Again please let me know how to improve it, it obviously needs to be improved.

It's very simple: rename the kernel, install it manually (which means drop it at the root of your system drive and set permissions on it) and edit your com.apple.Boot.plist accordingly. Then, as stated in the guide, run the update.

If it doesn't work when you do that, then the update is overwriting something else that's required for OS X to run on your PC - you didn't pick all those patches in "Customize" for nothing when you installed.

Hmm...

Thanks a ton for all the help you've given me Beerkex'd, I'd probably have given up a long time ago if you weren't here.

Annnyway, If I do it the way you're saying to, it freezes at 14%. I don't know why. I guess I'll try again...?

The update is overwriting your patched extensions with vanilla ones that don't work with your hardware. The same goes for you Michael - sorry about the threadjack. Both of you:

You need to go back and find out which patched kernel extensions are needed on your system for OS X to work. The patches you pick in 'Customize' before installing is a good start. Make a list and post it here.

Where does it halt at 14%, on the first or second reboot?

Normally after installing an OS update, it will reboot twice before arriving at the desktop.

If you can reboot with -v and take a photo of where it halts maybe I can help.

Reboot? I never rebooted.... WHILE the update is installing, it halts. It says something like "14% completed" and it halts. It counts up from 0% for a little bit, then finally gets to 14% and stops, and neither my keyboard nor my mouse respond, and I am forced to restart my PC. I can no longer boot after that, as the update didn't completely finish.

Just so we're clear - you should be using the full 10.5.8 update (aka combo) from Apple, weighing in at about 760MB, and of course the voodoo kernel renamed to mach_kernel.voodoo, placed at the root of your system drive.

Post the contents of your com.apple.Boot.plist, and a list of the patches and fixes you picked in Customize before installing.

Yep, yep, and yep.

I installed the drivers for: AC97 Audio.

...I think that's it. Also installed the Extra Fonts, and the Japanese and German language translations. That's it.

My com.apple.Boot.plist is just the default stuff, I've changed nothing, except I changed the kernel to mach_kernel.voodoo, since that's what I named the Voodoo kernel at my drive's root.

Let's test my memory here....

it went something like this:

iPC 10.5.6 Universal Final

Kernel: 9.5.0 voodoo Kernel

Chipset Drivers: LegacyAppleIntelPIIATA

Audio Drivers: AC97

Fixes and Patches: AppleSMBIOS ToH (Fixes "About This Mac" crash) Seatbelt.Kext 10.5.5 (fixes errors mounting DMG images)

video was fine after boot but I had to get funky to get QE/CI working.....lol

that's was about it for me.

Ebol: go for it, let us know how it goes.

Michael:

Sorry, the information you posted doesn't reveal anything to me that would cause the update to fail.

Since you're using a legacy driver for your PATA controller, it would not get erased when updating, and would probably continue to work (good).

AppleSMBIOS ToH would get replaced with a vanilla AppleSMBIOS.kext but that should not cause the update to fail.

Same thing for the AC97 kext, it would get replaced but that should not cause any trouble either, just no audio.

heh... bricked her again

but the good news is I think I have gotten closer this time :D

the renaming kernel and setting permissions worked right this time but, i forgot to change the seatbelt kext for the new kernel ^_^ shame on me.

I then attempted to mount the update and a KP forced me to restart DOH!

After that I was dead......going to try again.

Time machine here i come!

I made it to 10.5.4, then updated to 10.5.5 and got an error when I tried to reboot after installing the 10.5.5 update. Sad.

I couldn't get backups working, so I don't have one to go back to... Guess I have to re-install... I'll try some other kernels first.

Edit: That error is: DumpPanic[45]: Error getting a reference to IODeviceTree:/options

That sucks Ebol! What was wrong with Time machine that you could not make a backup?

That's frustrating!

Beerkexd,

This part seems a bit confusing to me.....as far as you can tell, do I need this?

Don't forget you need to have a decrypter installed, such as FakeSMC.kext* by Netkas (make sure to get correct version for 10.5.x). Older ones are DSMOS.kext and AppleDecrypt.kext. Do not install more than one of these.

*notes on fakesmc.kext

fakesmc topic at Netkas' blog: http://netkas.org/?cat=15

fakesmc.kext is meant to be used on full retail (that includes the kernel) installations and will not work with the voodoo kernel as-is because it requires that one of the extensions that the Voodoo Kernel disables is loaded.

If you want to use fakesmc kext with the Voodoo Kernel, you have to disable the Voodoo Kernel's kext-blacklisting feature first. You will then need to use a disabler.kext that disables at least AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Some disablers that are in circulation also disable some other kexts that may or may not be incompatible with your particular configuration. It's easy to add kexts to (or remove from) the plist in disabler.kext, open the plist inside in a plist editor to see how its done. To disable Voodoo Kernel kext-blacklisting, add blacklist=0 to the kernel flags key in com.apple.Boot.plist.

Thanks!

Nevermind about re-installing, I'm at 10.5.7 now.

But, my 10.5.8 update keeps failing right at the very end of installing... Dang! So close! It says the source media is damaged, so I re-downloaded the update, and tried again, but same results.

The problem with Time Machine was that it kept on telling me that it couldn't find the Backup Disk, which I had already selected several times. Couldn't figure out the problem, gave up.

Edit: Arggh! "Still waiting for root device" on boot....

Mike: Yes, you need AppleDecrypt/DSMOS/Fakesmc.kext to run OS X on a PC. But one of those is already installed on your hackintosh and it will stay where it is when you update. The updater doesn't overwrite it because it's not an Apple kernel extension.

I only mentioned it in my guide because it's essential on all systems, with no exception.

Up to 10.5.8, but I think I can only boot with a certain kernel, and I miiiight be in Safe Mode right now... can't remember.

Edit: Remembered. I can only boot from the DVD now using "rd=disk0s2". If I try to boot from ANY other kernel on my hard drive, I get "Still waiting for root device".

Edit: FIXED! ;)

New problem, can't boot using the 10.5.8 Voodoo Kernel, I get an error:

ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::start - waitForService(resourceMatching(AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement) timed out

I think the AppleIntelCPUPowerMangement.kext is the problem, but I don't even have one.

EDIT:

TOTALLY FINE! Boots up fine at 10.5.8! Used that method I posted a a link to a couple posts back.

That method you linked to earlier looks like hard work, glad it paid off.

The SMC_PlatformPlugin message is normal, it appears on all systems running the Voodoo Kernel. As you can see it's timing out waiting for AppleIntelCPU(...).kext to load, which will not happen because that kernel extension is blacklisted automatically by the Voodoo Kernel. Don't worry about it.

Where did Michael go..
