A Nonny Moose
OK, Windows has gotten you so paranoid (or you've pirated tons of software) that you can't stand the thought of Dashboard phoning home to check for widget updates. No problem now with this Applescript. WARNING--you have 15 seconds to put in your administrative password and then Terminal becomes unusable (due to dialog box). domino
Why not use another widget? As far as i remember, weather, sports, currency converter, some phonebook widger (don't remember) all connect to Apple's site. If you don't run those and use an alternative, they don't connect to Apple. Same thing with iTunes and quicktime. How are you going to watch trailers without connecting to Apple's servers? Don't use them. I can name plenty more apps that connect to Apple, There's no getting around it unless you disable a lot of OS features.
A Nonny Moose
Why not use another widget? Because people want the joys of Apple's stuff without the phoning home (meaning they're pirating or paranoid, yer pick).
domino
I don't think you got my point. Turning off call homes on widgets doesn't do anything to the other apps that do the same thing. If you null one script, you might as well null the rest. Good luck with it.
A Nonny Moose
You have a good point in that it only stops one item from doing it and not the others. Unfortunately, I don't know if it's the same terminal command (with a different application name of course) or not. The sad thing is, that one friggin script will be seen as a "victory for consumer rights" or some other rot like that. Well, without getting into the whole "consumers can't be trusted, so we have this {censored} in place" rant, I'll leave it at that. Loves ya, dom. domino
I know what you mean. I have a big advocate of anomimity myself. I use http://www.autopatcher.com/ for all win updates. I just havent fount a way to full anomimity from Apple other than using a private proxy in Russia.
