Need advice on a SATA DVD drive for my Snow Leopard hackintosh

I have been searching the forums, but not getting anywhere on a decision about a 10.6 compatible SATA DVD drive. The OSx86 database does not seem to even have a section for 10.6 compatible hardware!?

So far I have tried 2 from Walmart:

Lite ON and HP. They are not "Apple Burn" supported.

like this ( this is my current IDE CD-RW drive):

LITE-ON LTR-52327S:

Firmware Revision: QS0E

Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Apple Supported Drive) ( "Apple shipping drive" would be even better )

Cache: 2048 KB

Reads DVD: No

CD-Write: -R, -RW

Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw

Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

I really want a DVD/CD-RW SATA drive that has Apple Burn support - not generic...

I am thinking about these:

Sony Optiarc 24X DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Black SATA Model AD-7240S-0B - OEM

SAMSUNG CD/DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223C - OEM

Pioneer CD/DVD Burner Black SATA Model DVR-218LBK LabelFlash Support - OEM

The Pioneer is my first choice - except for the poor quality reviews...

For the Samsung, I also read not so good reviews.

I have had good luck with SONY in the past on a real Mac...

I can't find these locally to buy and return, so I must order them on the web, which would involve return postage and possible restocking fees.

Please let me know what DVD drives you are using with your 10.6 Snow Leopard set ups.

Thanks! ;)

I ordered, and received, the Samsung from newegg - SH S233L ( lightscribe ). ON the sticker on the drive, it is listed as SH-S223L/BEBS.

Unfortunately, it is listed as "generic" burn supported - not what I was hoping for...

I have not tried to use it.

Any input out there??? :)

what do you lose by only having "generic burn support"?

Good question.

One of the drives I tried was a 48X CD burner. The system profiler reported that is would burn CDs at 4X - that isn't a typo, 4X...

Another one, according to the booted up Mac ( under the icon on top right of the screen to open / close the drive ), did not have a drive attached - it was.

I read on another thread that a "generic" supported drive would not burn properly with Disk Utility...

I am currently using an older IDE CD-RW drive ( in my sig ), that is "Apple supported" and have no issues with it. I can even use the F12 key to open / close the drive. I have been successful with Disk Utility as well.

I want to upgrade to DVD / CD - RW though...

I ordered the SONY. I should have it by Saturday. This is starting to add up...

My SONY drive will not arrive until Wednesday after all...

So, taking the advice I was given, I am trying out the SAMSUNG.

TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223L:

Firmware Revision: SB02

Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)

Profile Path: None

Cache: 2048 KB

Reads DVD: Yes

CD-Write: -R, -RW

DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

So far, it correctly reports burning CDs at 48X :)

It erased a CDRW disc :D

Works with the F12 open / close key ( and icon ) :D

No issues burning an MP3 CD ( 2 minutes! 45 MP3's) :D

It's currently playing a DVD flawlessly. I just popped it in, and Apple DVD player took over :D

Perhaps I don't need a drive that is listed as "Apple burn supported"...Hmmmm....

I sold the SAMSUNG, and tried the SONY. It too only has "generic" support...

I wonder if there is only one SATA model that will work as native? The one that Apple currently ships. They have not been using SATA DVD drives for long, so I might be wasting my time ( and money ), hoping that a non Apple SATA DVD will be fully supported....

I can't seem to find a legit model number for the Apple SATA DVD drive....

I might have better luck with IDE, but the new case that I just shoe horned everything into is tight. That IDE cable restricts what little airflow that is available... :D

I recently made a trip to the Apple Store, to see if I could get a definitive answer to my quest :)

I asked a Mac Genius about replacing my optical drive with a SATA one. I asked twice, in two different ways about compatibility and "Apple Burn Support". I was told that any drive will do. I wasn't even directed to Apple's website to order one. I was instructed to search the internet for one...

I guess I am obsessed about burn support for nothing...

BTW, the only Mac Pro on display had a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GH41N drive, which I was informed is by Hitachi...

Can any of you out there reading this thread post your drives - and compatibility??? ;)

I don't like the SONY, as it shoots the tray out with force, when ejecting, almost taking the door off of my PC case. And, when at full speed is loud. It really does sound like a jet engine roaring for take off, as someone else stated. :D

My Sony IDE burner is listed as Generic, but it has a nastily horrible habit of kernel panicing the system, I have a sneak suspicion it's due to the IDE controller though, I plan to get a SATA drive soon...

It can however (when it doesnt kernel panic) burn and read at all speeds.

SONY DVD RW DRU-V200A:

Firmware Revision: 1.60

Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)

Profile Path: None

Cache: 2048 KB

Reads DVD: Yes

CD-Write: -R, -RW

DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Media:

Type: CD-R

Blank: No

Erasable: No

Overwritable: No

Appendable: No

Note that there's currently a CD-R in the drive.

My good ole' Asus sata drive does the fast eject thing - but then won't go back in! I have to shutdown, push the tray back in, and then start the computer back up. It never does this when booted into Windows though. I might try the Macsales drive

I want back to the Samsung SH-S223C... I realized that it wasn't worth all of the effort that I was putting into this... I don't use it much, but I have had zero problems with it. The ejet / load functionality works every time from the F12 key. It reads CDs and DVDs every time. And burns CDs w/o issue. The soft eject is nice too, for the trap door on my PC case. It is pretty quiet as well.
