darthosx86
Here is a little program which stops the whinning of every 1 Generation MBP: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30229 Product Description: This is a fix for the MacBook Pro whine issue using a StartupItem that loads a kernel extension which disables the C4 power mode on the CPU. It is packaged in a standard Mac OS X installer to make installation easy. Do NOT install this on computers other than the first generation MacBook Pro. This software is unsupported and comes with absolutely no warranty.
Swad
Interesting. Anyone try it?
Colonel
I wish someone would make a program that would stop the whine on my MacBook.
DCosta
I'm afraid to try this. What is the C4 power mode on the CPU? Will disabling this reduce my notebooks overall power?
Swad
Oh, if that's what they were talking about on the Apple forums, it might stop the whine but it also decreases battery life. Use with caution.
zerozerosix
I tried on my MBP 1.83 for few minutes only : it works but my computer ran considerably warmer. I did not test the battery life. It was so hot I decided to remove it. I read in other various forums that Apple is unofficially starting to replace logic bord of whining MBP (early ones, 1.83 GHz). I will ask for a repair tomorrow. You should do that if you can. Don't believe "It's within spec". It is not.
G-Force
C4 power state doesn't let the CPU throttle i think, although, not entirely. That explains the heat and the reduced battery life.
-TiLT-
quietMBP, i think, is still the programm, that solves the problem at the lowest cost of battery life.
