jrsdead
I had the exact same problem when i first installed 10.4.6 i wasnt able to install any packages including iTunes and a java update as well as iLife not installing either. I fixed it repairing permissions in disk utilty whilst logged in as root ( I tried it logged in under an admin account and it just said it repaired no problem but it didnt work)

jrsdead
how log as root Sorry for replying so late been away for a few days. Open /Applications/Utilities/Netinfo Manager.app and authenticate with an admin password then under "Security" select "Enable root user" and follow any directions. Next log out and on the login screen click other and use the user name root and your root password to login. When you are finished dont forget to deactivate the root user in the same way you activated it (it is better to have the root user deactivated for security reasons. jrsdead
