Drivers for Nvidia Geforce 9400 GT - Success

I've got my 9400 GT fully working with CI/QE now thanks to tips from Fireofanor, Taz, and most importantly Aqua-Mac who's created an installer with the latest Apple nVidia driver release that updates drivers for the new cards/GPUs. That is the key.

Short guide on how I did it:

1) Download and install Aqua-Mac's nVidia driver installer. Don't think you need to remove exisiting nVidia kexts. Don't reboot yet, though installer will ask you to.

2) Remove NVinject, kext and NVkush.kext if you have them installed.

3) Create EFI/GFX string in com.apple.Boot.plist as suggested in previous posts. I find the easiest way to do this is via OSX86Tools.

a. Use Add EFI Strings/Boot Flag on main menu. Select GFX strings option.

b. Scroll to bottom of list, select Custom nVidia GeForce.

c. For name model enter "NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT".

d. Select the amount of memory on your card.

e. Select the display output that matches your card. For my PNY Verto, it's dual DVI-I ports.

f. The plist info and hex string for your card will pop up. Select and copy the hex string for safety, but use the "Import String to Boot Editor" option. Click Apply Change on the next screen that pops up, no need to add other flags or strings.

4) Use repair disk permissions and clear kext cache on OSX86Tools main menu or do this any way you like.

5) Check the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist file for safety sake using terminal and nano or vi just to make sure the string was inserted properly. If not, use the version you copied to the clipboard and add the "device-properties" key and value manually. (Sudo to edit file.)

6) Reboot and enjoy the results! No mods to driver kexts with device ids or anything else is required.

My SP output now:

NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT:

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT

Hey Sansome or any experts...

So I tried following your post here and now I am hosed...My system is stuck at the grey logo screen with the spinning wheel now and won't load.

Can anyone help?! I am desperate here...

Thanks.

I tried upgrading my Leopard hackintosh to Snow Leopard over the weekend, and I got everything up and running using the LIfehacker guide and EP45UD3P OSx86 V3, except for Quartz Extreme on my BFG nVidia GeForce 9400 GT 512MB. I've tried everything from installing the nvidia kexts to using a custom EFI string generated via OSX86Tools. I also tried copying and pasting the EFI string manually - no dice. I've put the EFI string the com.apple.boot.plist in Volumes/Snow Leopard/Extra, and also in Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration.

What could I possibly be missing?

How do you know that QE isn't working?

And how is the card showing up under "About This Mac"? Are you able to change resolutions?

I know it's not working because none of my screensavers work, frontrow doesn't work, and imovie pops up with an error that says QE isn't enabled for your card.

In about this mac it says I have an unknown nvidia card. I can't get it to say anything but that - very frustrating. :-(

I am able to change resolutions, however.

If you can help me out I would very much in debt to you! I've spent two days on this already.

This from my about my mac screen:

Guys, I'm so desperate to get this working that I will set up remote screen sharing for anyone who has a few minutes to sit down and help me figure this out. I've tried everything - including some of the custom drivers in this thread, and for the life of me I can't get it to work. PM if you are an expert and want to help me learn how to get the 9400GT working with this system through remote screen sharing.

After three days of struggle to get QE and other support back, finally I succeeded. I am posting the kexts for all members having the same graphics card. I would also like to thank this forum for providing me essential guidelines to make this possible. Here are the kexts, just install them with kexthelper.

Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT drivers

NOTE:

Works on Leopard 10.5.5 and above.

It works with 10.5.7 also

Hey MacNutty,

Are these kext for the nvidia xfx GeForce 9400 GT because when i used them my resolution got locked when before i had full control of resolution

Hi,

I think I installed everything successfully (using NVInject), but I have a problem: HD 720p and 1080p video is very choppy... I think according to my hardware it shouldn't:

Motherboard: ga-ex58-ud3

CPU: i7 Quad Core 2.67Ghz

Video card: 9400GT 512MB

RAM: 8GB DDR2

The CPU usage is at > 100% for the video.. I have 1 monitor connected via DVI (same thing happens with VGA, or 2 monitors - VGA & HDMI. DVI & HDMI combo doesn't work, but that's the least of my worries.

Did I install something incorrectly? Here is the output from Sysmon:

Chipset Model: Graphics by NVIDIA

Type: GPU

Bus: PCIe

PCIe Lane Width: x16

VRAM (Total): 512 MB

Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Device ID: 0x065b

Revision ID: 0x00a1

ROM Revision: NVinject 0.2.1

Hi all. I am using Nvidia 9400 GT 1GVDDRAM3 and it is working full QE CI support in Snow Leopard 10.6.3. I am using NVEnabler 64.kext in /Extra/Extensions and no GFX string in com.apple.Boot.plist. The single minor issue is not recognized in System Profiler (vendor nVidia (0x10de)), Chipset Model: Unknown nVidia card. But I don't care too much of this however this is 100% functional. I will attach a zip of nvenabler 64. I hope I don't break the rules with it, or the administrator can delete the attachment. I hope this helps.

Hello,

i have a smal problem with my 9400GT.

My Second Hackintosh works great, except the 9400GT. I use EFI String with VGA/DVI, the only Combi that will work. When i first insert the EFI string an restart everthings works perfect.

Then i reboot, and after it boots i have a Blue Screen. When i unplug my Monitor and replug it, everthings work great. This sucks ^^ i Dont wont to replug my Monitor on every Startup.

i Try NvEnabler, but ended with a black Screen. Every other NVCap ( DVI/DVI, DVI/VGA ) will not work an shows a Black Screen.

Can someone help my pls ?

Oh, i forget the System... 10.6.3

can anyone offer up any help on an issue i've been having since 10.6.3? my output to my screen is now "oversized", meaning the i have about a 1/2" of display missing (including taskbar and some of my dock). it worked fine in 10.6.2. what i want to do is take the kexts from 10.6.2 and use on 10.6.3/10.6.4. is that possible without it crashing? how would i know what kexts to replace? i am using a asus en9400gt video card.

I don't know if this post belongs here but i didn't have permissions to start a new thread so i'll give this a shot.

I haven't been able to try any of these methods with my BFG Geforce 9400 GT because i can't get it to boot in safe mode with this graphic card installed. Before i installed the card i could boot in safe mode and access the desktop with my integrated card (ATI Radeon HD 3200). For some reason, when booting with -x -v, i see after it says "NTFS volume label Gateway, version 3.1" the monitor turns black and looks like if it is in sleep mode (blinking power led on monitor). Did anyone else experience this while installing? Would an overheated card do this? When i pulled it out after the failed attempt to get it to work it felt pretty hot. The card works fine on Windows btw.
