Hi Folks!

I used to write detailed instructions for successful installation:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=132832

but in the meantime become a superfluous addition to so many good posts on the net.

So I decided just to inform you about important details that diverging from the standards.

In the meantime I purchased a new PC with the following components:

Motherboard:

Gigabyte P55A-UD3

Intel P55 Chipset

CPU i7 860

8 GB G.Skill DDR3-1333 Ripjaws Serie (7-7-7-21)

ATI Radeon Sapphire HD 4870 1GB

1 x 1TB SATA2 with SNOW

1 x 500GB SATA2 with Win7 Ultimate 64Bit

2 x 500GB SATA2 Time Mashine & Media

Blu-ray LG BH08LS

following peripheral devices I tested (report in the 3rd chapter):

Wlan PCI Asus 138G V2 (Broadcom 4311 Chipset)

Wlan Edimax EW-7711Uan USB (Ralink 2780 Chipset)

Firewire PCI D-Link (VIA6306 Chipset)

Firewire PCI Hercules (Agere Chipset)

Firewire PCI-e Digitus (Texas Instruments Chipset)

1. Chapter

Successfuly Install Snow 10.6.2 using tonymacx86´s guide:

http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2009/11/os-...ing-retail.html

with some very important changes for people who were stucked on:

"still waiting for root device" issue:

1. In Bios under Integrated Periferials - SATA Port 0-3 Native mode must be DESABLED because of the patched AppleAHCI.kext witch support only Legacy mode.

If this does not help, just connect your SATA HD to one of the last 4 SATA ports (4-7) to avoid IDE Legacy Mode.

2. Reboot and go in single user mode with the "-s" flag. When the System asks you to run File System check, type in: fsck -y and type Enter.

If you get the message: "Can't initialize disk cache" you need to type next command:"clear disk cache" ,

confirm with Enter.

After that you can leave single mode with command: "exit" and you will see after few seconds this long waiting WELCOME screen!

2. Chapter - Postinstall

Let's look at the components of the P55A-UD3 motherboards:

Socket 1156

Chipset P55 Express

IDE Controller iTE IT8213

I/O Controller iTE IT8720

SATA 2 Controller Intel Chip P55 (PCH)

SATA 3 Controller Marvell 88SE9128

Sound Realtek ALC888

LAN Realtek RTL8111D

2 x USB 3.0 NEC Chip

3 PCI Slots

2 PCIe x1 Slots

1 PCIe x16 Slot

1 PCIe 2.0 x16 Slot

My computer is recognized as the iMac 27 " (11.1):

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/2289/aboutthismacd.png

Compared with the original iMac 27":

http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html

http://www.appleinsider.com/print/09/11/12..._late_2009.html

We need some adapted kexts to be able to use not compatibile Hardware:

IDE JMicronATA.kext

Sound x64forALC888.kext

LAN RealtekR1000SL.kext

All kexts can be found on WWW. Google is your best frend!

Very important difference between iHac and original iMac is that the iMac has only PCIe slots on Board (2x PCIe x16 and 4 PCIe x4) and that caused me a lot of headache with periferial PCI devices.

3. Chapter Peripheral devices

Since i have WiFi at home, i bought PCI-Card Asus 138G V2 with Broadcom 4311 Chipset, thinking on compatibility with Apple. Installed it in 3. PCI Slot (Faraway from Graphic Card). System recognised the Card showing

As AirPort Extreme but scanning for WiFi Sources didn´t funcked!

After some googling people report similar problemms and solved it with changing in another PCI Slot. So, I did the same, but no Joy! I didnot tryed 1. Slot because of GraphicCard Fun proper functionality.

I bought instead USB Wlan Stick Edimax EW-7711Uan USB with Ralink 2780 Chipset reading some positive reports, Ralink company puted 64bit Drivers for Snow Leopard on their WWW!

But again a lot of problems with installing, recognising and configuring it, till i got finaly connection with my Router! I was very happy till next reboot! Guess what? Didn´t work again! Everything again from the beginning...reinstalling....

OK! Not with me! This time i used RTL Lan on board to connect with D-Link DAP1160 Wireless AP as AirBridge! Now everything WORK perfectly!!!

Second PCI Device was Firewire PCI D-Link with VIA6306 Chipset installed into second PCI Slot (middle one)

Problem! System Cannot initialize the device, but in verbose mode can be seen as recognised and in use with 400MB speed?

I have red that a lot of original iMac´s have Firewire problems recognising external FW Devices. They are very sensitive! So I´ve tried second one:

Firewire PCI Hercules (Agere Chipset) same Problem!

Anyway, I was playing and combyning Asus Wifi,D-link and Hercules

FW cards in all tree PCI Slots, and i came to one VERY IMPORTANT Conclusion:

FIRST PCI Slot (nearest to GraphicCard) is the only fully working one!

Other two have some problems, (some Interapt conflicts)! As soon as i put Asus

Wlan into first one PCI Slot i was abble to scan and connect over WiFi!!!

For Firewire was IDEAL solution to buy Firewire PCI-e Digitus (Texas Instruments Chipset). This one WORKED OUT OF the BOX!!!

For all the people having problems (crashes) with Final Cut Studio Suite 2 & 3, Qmaster and Compresor:

try to bring your Firewire working properly, that solved my problem, too!

Now my Digital CUT System working 100% OK. I forgot to mention that the ContourShuttle Pro work allso under Snow Leopard 32 & 64Bit!!

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...135258&st=0

That´s it for the moment.

Do you use a hacked kernel? or the original one of apple? Also, what can you say about P55 chipset's performance under snow leo ? Thank you very much.

After updating to 10.6.2 i am using original Vanilla Kernel. About P55 Performance under Snow leo : at the moment not all resources are used, but i hope that will be changed with the futured Updates! After some Tests my iHac is about 20% slower as Original iMac 27", but 20 % faster as Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit!

I hope to help you with this!

Cheers!

Hi,

Thank you for your post who gives me a lot of valuables informations.

Unfortunatly, I still have a probleme with the sound of my P55A-UD3 motherboard.

I didn't find on google the exact "x64forALC888.kext", so I tried "ALC888 HD Audio" then "HDAEnabler (32-/64-bit)" from kexts.com and nothing works. Do you have any tips for me ?

Thanks.

After downloading, delete all installed audio kexts and use small aplication "Kext Helper" to install properly!

Is the performance drop true of all P55 boards?

You should actually post a new Tread with this question!

Because i can answer only for my motherboard, i don´t know how it is with others! I am also curios!?!

One of not 100% solved problems of P55 (on my MBoard) is SATA Controller:

Hi Guys,

As I mentioned before, under this Link:

http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2009/11/os-...ing-retail.html

You can see the Bios settings, with changes i already described.

Please, be more precise: If you follow Tonymacx86 guide, tell me on what Step you hang on?

But first of all, you need to boot from SATA - DVD Drive, not from IDE, because SL does not recognize JMB-ATA Controller from scratch, you need to install patched IDE JmicronATA.Kext after first reboot in \Extra directory!

EDIT:

"One of not 100% solved problems of P55 (on my MBoard) is SATA Controller"

After some tests I can confirm that GENERIC SATA Controller works 100% OK, it is only cosmetics question!

If you wont to have it right in System profiler, just install LegacyJMBSATA.kext, who has only info.plist to do that.

Hey QuattroFX -

I found the x64 audio for ALC888 kext from this thread, and put the two files (AppleHDA and HDAEnabler) in my extra folder. I get sound (after creating an aggregate device in Midi Manager) but it pops and crackles (no snaps through).

Did you have different files in that rapidshare link that no longer works? Should I remove other audio kexts from my Extensions folder?

Thanks man.

Hi PunkHop,

Here you can find all info´s about audio for P55 Boards:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=188349

Delete all Audio kexts from /Extras and from /Extensions, install x64_audio_for_ALC888.kext (download and unzip from this link) using small application called "Kext Helper", repair permisions and reboot!

That´s all.

Hope that would work for you.

Thanks for the feedback. No particular problem with the blu-ray drive?

Not at all!

I am using MakeMKV & BDMV Ripper applications for ripping Blu-ray discs to HD and "PLEX" Media streaming Server App.

for playing it. In the PLEX Properties you can activate 5.1 surround under Audio settings.

Blu-ray disc you can burn with TOAST 10 (with BD Plug-in)

http://www.makemkv.com/

BDMV Ripper

http://www.plexapp.com/

I am very satisfied with this solution.

Would you make a list of all the audio kexts? I know a few, just don't wanna miss em.

Is it just VoodooHDA, HDA Enabler, and AppleHDA? That page mostly has different versions of those three.

ALSO: I got rid of those 3, then installed the 2 kexts from that x64 alc888 file. Made an aggregate surround output which is working, BUT... what I'm wondering is... is there a way to force standard mp3s and etc to play in all the speakers?

I don´t think so, because .mp3 is mostly only Stereo, you need to test it with some Original DVD with 5.1 Dolby Surround

with AC3 Digital sound, or try this small TEST:

If this works for you and you can hear all 5+1 speakers, than you have 5.1 Surround on your System!

Cheeers

It doesn't work for me. Did you have to create the aggregate profile in Midi Settings?

When I play a Bluray rip with 5.1, it sounds great... but YouTube clips and general mp3s stutter and pop when I start them.

Here is one solution from Macgirl for this:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...143510&st=0

Give it a try...

And Yes, U must create one 5.1 Audio aggregate in Midi setup.

Second, try this .kext from kexts.com : ALC888 HD Audio (first delete HDAudio & EnableHDA) and use Kexthelper!

This one gave me fast perfect sound!
