which part of the MacBook are you touching? The thin strip of metal above the F-keys? or the palmrest area? The palmrest area shouldn't get hot at all (at most it warms up a bit)

also, MacBook Pro and PowerBook, despite their similarity in look, are completely different breeds...so try not to generalize them into one big category.

my macbook pro gets hot when I use it at CPU maxed. Right now, it is on my lap. Normal surfing, core temps 40c - 60c. It gets warm, but not uncomfortably so. Use it to do real work, it runs the core to 82c before the fans kick in to stabilize and bring it down to the sub 70c range. During this time, it is too hot for the lap, and the area above the keyboard is too hot to touch for more than an instant. The keys and palm areas remain cool. I've had to purchase a lap tray in order to keep my desk from discoloring this thing gets so warm.

These core temps aren't out of line with what I get using other notebooks running linux, or windows. Its just the 1" aluminum, IMO, does a much better job conducting heat away from the core and to the surface.

I'm hoping we get some sort of fan relief. All of this whining about the whine of the fans has led to a hotter than is safe (in my opinion) machine. I've owned a G4 Powerbook, BTW, it got warm, warmer than any hackintosh I've built, but never hot like this 17" macbook pro. This 17" is beautiful, and legal, but it is making me miss the days of old, running OSX on any number of HP/Compaq models, with a cool underside at full tilt!

My Macbook gets almost unbearably hot right above the F-keys. When I have it on my lap, I have to have a magazine between the Macbook and my lap so I don't get burned. It's really annoying.

i have the same problem on the MBP, colonels. right above the f keys it gets damn hot. but if im in OS X, the underside doesnt get too hot. only when im in XP does my thigh burn with agony.

I noticed the same thing when I run Windows. That's when it seems to get the hotest. I think it's a power management problem that Windows has.
