Well i have a DVD successfully playing on OS X as we speak (Ginger Snaps), but there is one slight problem. The video playback is a little jittery, i'm assuming this is because we don't have proper video drivers yet, but the sound is still absolutely awsome!

anyways here is the link to the download:

Videolan DVD Playback Download

Official Page for Videolan:

Videolan Official Site

*EDIT* You must know how to install applications on your mac inorder for you to KEEP the program, because if you don't you will end up mounting the program everytime you want to use it.

*EDIT*EDIT*

Since i'm nice i decided to tell you how to install programs, if you don't knw (i know there are some of you who will be lazy and ask sooo..)

When you download VLC media player, you will end up with a VLC-0.8.x.dmg file. Double-click on it to open this file. An icon will now appear on your Desktop (looks like a removable drive, this means the image is now mounted), right beside your drive(s). Open it and drag the VLC application from the resulting window to the place where you want to install it. Most often this is the directory Applications on your main harddrive.

okay, well it should be opening when you hit "open disk" -> "dvd" -> "Video TS Folder" -> browse to that folder on your DVD -> then hit "open." Give it a second or 2 then the video should start playing.

I am also now testing other videos (currently Eternal Sunshine) and it is still working.

Edit* i also forgot to mention that version thing that your talking about has nothing to do with it, so don't worry about it, because that is the most up to date version of Videolan.

*Edit* One thing that i have just found is that currently it will only play the first chapter of the DVD (VTS_01_1.VOB) also one other thing i may mention is that i am currently using DVDs that DO NOT have a menu in them (i put them in a DVD player and it start playing the video like a VCR would).

okay, i've now tried a video that has a built in menu and I seem to be getting this error

"main: stream chained failed for `std{access=file, mux=ts,url=""}'

main: cannot start stream output instance, aborting"

Is this the same error you are getting?

if you mean my specs:

P4 2.6 GHZ Northwood (with hyperthreading enabled)

P4P800 Deluxe (not an "E" edition)

Realtek Ethernet Card

120 Gig Sata HD

512 MB of ram

ATI All in Wonder 9800 PRO (128 mb)

HL-DT-DVDRAM GSA-41683B (LG Dive - secondary)

^(DVD Writer very old and only a single layer burner - also what i'm using to watch dvds with)

HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4520B (LG Drive - Primary)

^(I used this drive to first test if i could watch dvds on it, an i could, except OS X has had some fun with me and decided to lock it. it is still detected, but it won't recognize DVDs for some reason

also it is a bit of a resource hog when your running the video.

I also recorded a video of it running for proof, if somebody could tell me what i could use to encode it (under OS X) and if i could get a host i'l be happy to share it. Or is that completely illegal, and Apple Law will come after us?

UPDATE:

I have now been able to play a DVD all the way through (although it is still a DVD without a menu). I have found that i have to File -> Quick Open File -> Select DVD -> Video_TS -> VTS_01_1.VOB *hold select key* then click VTS_01_4.VOB (or whatever your last .VOB file is).

I always get permission denied when ever I use any dvd player to play a DvD in Os X

I used to get this error in linux untill i would set the premissions for that drive but there doesnt seem to be a way to do that in os x ;)

If i try to play the dvd with menus and all I get this :

EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (0x0002)

0x00000001

okay i have an idea, find out which "VTS_XX_XX.VOB" (there may be more then one) you menu, and trailers are. Once you have found out which ones are your VIDEO ONLY try selecting those and playing those by themselves. Please tell me if this works, seeing as i have no way to test this yet.

I am too able to "play" dvds (I've tried the german dvd "Der Untergang", specifically) this way with 8.2.4 compiled for x86,after selecting Quartz as the default video output. But it is not really dvd playing, you're playing the vobs, there is no menu access...
