I believe that 512MB version of the mob.radeon HD4330 won't work. Only the 256MB version is recognized.

I'm trying to understand if it is possible to fake the card as a HD4350 that has same specs as mine and looking at this article seems to be recognized with the same drivers

well! resolution changes with external monitor are good news!

It seems that we are very close to the full support of the card.

I tried to backup the card's bios following this guide:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=200458

but no luck, maybe for a win 7 problem.

if somebody did it with a mobility radeon hd4330 512mb let us know!!!

No offense to anyone, but I do not see how this can be an effective install method. The major problem with it is most people who want to do this will not want to install another copy of Mac OS X in order to get it installed on their Dell. I think what we really need is a method that resolves this problem.

Hi! Are you using a 512MB version of mobility HD4330?

As you can read in this topic it seems that only 256 MB version of the card is actually working with QE/CI support, as wmarsh said, in fact my 512 MB isn't still recognized.

Anyway maybe it is a video ROM issue, I've read here that a HD4800 series user succeeded loading the original ATI.ROM extracted from the card in windows using GPU-Z a free tool. With pc efi 10.5 and modding the Boot plist SL "booted with crispy graphics".

I've tried to do the same, but the program said that bios reading was not supported for my card. Somewhere was written that it is a win 7 issue. Or maybe it is not possible to extract the bios from a mobility card.

So by now I've not other ideas. Give it a try if you want.

Maybe waiting for the next 10.6.3 update could solve the problem...(?)

Let us know if you've got any progress

Update:

after reading this I tried to put the modified kexts (x2000 and 4500controller) also in S/L/E.

Rebooted and after the glossy apple and spinning wheel screen my monitor switched black.

SnowLeopard was up and running as I could shut down with keyboard commands as a blind.

In the same way I rebooted and with the help of another mac I started system profiler with the keyboard and saved the profile.

once restored the original 10.6.2 kext in S/L/E I restarted SL in vesa and opened the saved profile:

this is what I found:

Seems the card is correctly recognized with the kexts in S/L/E (in fact the vram info is correct!!), but no monitor at all.

Any idea of why this could happens???

please help!

I also get black monitor with modified kext in /S/L/E

Also in /E/E if an extensions.mkext exists. Without a mkext, they load and work.

(Yes loading is longer but at least it works)

We are really close here.

Yess, we're really close!

But they're always on E/E and without any mkext..

But it seems they're ignored

according with nmarques this is an issue generated by the laptop LVDS port.

Seems that the ati framebuffer is not supporting that.

Maybe writing a new fremebuffer with LVDS support, like aty_wormy did ofr older ati cards, could work, but unfortunately I don't know where to begin...

it is your choice, have good time with your new laptop (i guess nvidia graphics)...

I'm now able to change resolutions from system preferences thanks to the dong's RadeonHD .kext

I'm now running the native 1366x768 like a charm and the apple battery indicators are working fine too. (followed this guide)

Still no QE/CI but I think we're very close to the solution.

We now know the problem source, we've got a temporary solution and hopefully a way to follow. I'm looking forward to see the full support of my 512 mb card...

I think it is the great resource made by this community!

I have a 256 Mb Vram (same as wmarsh), but I can't have QE/CI and I don't know why.... But the Apple battery indicators works fine for me

The dong's RadeonHD.kext works fine for me too in 1366x768x32. Really great !

I delete modified ATI4500Controller and ATIRadeonX2000 from /E/E

And my com.apple.Boot.plist is

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

hey there!

first of all, thanks soo much..i thought i had to go back to linux after all the effort i put in to make snow leopard running on my dell studio 1557..it was a pain to boot in safe mode all the time..

i did what the op described, changed ATIRadeon2000 to have my device id (0x95531002) its an ati mobility radeon 4570, put the kext and ATI4500 into Extra/Extensions, rebooted with Graphicsenabler=y and it works...not so sure about QE though, dvd player says it cannot find a supported card, the resolution is limited to 1440x1050 (because of wide screen 1080p led screen) but at least it is booting up now and showing the graphics..i changed my dsdt.aml as well with dsddt patcher and setting Peregrine as the framebuffer, it is still showing only 256 mb for now..but still, thanks alot, great job, i am sure it will be resolved soon...
