This is my first post. I have been around these parts for a while. Believe or not...Part of why is joined is this great resource, but the other is to give someone like me more information.

With that crazy intro I begin...

I Have a Core Duo Mac Mini...Successfully installed Vista. I deleted the 200 mb partition as suggested here and did the repair thing also once the installation was complete(also noted here) No immediate problems that I can detect from doing it so far (4 days). Vista is installed and it works. I CAN dual boot too OS X or Vista. Boot Camp is still functioning.

Problems:

I have no sound & Aero is Missing in Action.

Observations:

I like where M$ is going with this software and absolutely will obtain a copy as a dual-boot for my mac. One thing I will say is Vista isn't snappy performance wise as declared by M$. because performance tweaking hasn't been done, but one thing that they cannot tweak is how bloated Vista feels. I am a recent MAC convert. I love the MAC because programs just do what they are suppose to with an aggression. Neither XP nor Vista seem to be exceptional at any one thing. Just Good. Good is OK, but I remember when running Windows 3.11 on a Pentium 133mmx was good. We are talking about multi-core, multi-ghz, dual channel beasts, but the OS just hasn't seem too catch up.....Is it just me.

...I digressed. Anyone with questions I will respond if I can.

BTW...Did I mentioned I joined the forum and typed this post...you guest it...In Vista. :)

If anyone has any driver suggestions I am O P E N to them all.

update: I have read about forcing the computer to use the Lakeport graphics driver, but when my computer restarts the screen goes black and eventually my machine just reboots.

BTW...My mac mini has a 1 gig of ram.

Any help out there?

Thanks for the quick reply.

The resolution setup in the os was 1024 x 768, which my Dell Monitor is capable of showing.

BTW...My install is still good. I can enter in Safe Mode and change the driver.

Have you heard of any successful Mini/Aero users?

This from a different post.

To get Aero 3D fx working you should tweak the registry to enable it. (Just googling for it, now i'm not at home to send you my .reg file)

Shortcut tu manually turn off fx is: Shift + F9.

To make fx of windows (minimize or maximize..) us Shift + mouse click (like Mac?!!!)

Windows + Space make a fx like Alt + Tab in 3D style.

You may want to try that first.

I had a busy weekend so I didn't get to try this yet. I was under the impression that F9 no longer performed this funchtion in 5384.

I will let you know. I am also going to bone up on the registry hack.

  • 2 weeks later...

I heard that someone's got Aero working on their MacBooks by just downloading the GMA950 Driver for Vista from the Intel Website...

Since the Mac Mini also has the GMA950, you may want to give it a try.

Good luck :)

Wow, I was just waiting for someone to disprove apple's claims about "legacy operating systems." Great job man.

My guess is its just the mac. I have installed multiple builds on my amd 64 3700+ with a gig of ram, and they ran like greased lightning. I dont mean to be a hater, but it was zippier than any mac i have ever ran. the only thing i didnt like about beta 2, though, is its not developed enough to play oblivion too efficiently, although ive read that if you slap in another gig, anything will play just fine.

also, if you still have a pc, you can legally activate vista beta 2 on up to 10 computers, and can get 2 keys. you could try it on both your mac and pc and tell us the results.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Aero does not work on the mac mini (mine has 2gb and video defaults to 256mb in vista so mem isn't an issue)

If you attempt to install the lakeport wdm driver all you get is a blank screen. You can hear the os working in the background though.

The problem is that the lakeport hack does not work because the gma950 has been castrated in the mini, it's minus one 'monitor head' compared to the macbook :-(

However it may well be possible to finish of the monitor config using VNC or Remote Desktop, alas I only have one machine so cannot test that theory :-(

The Longhorn-Vista project has certainly struggled since it began over four years ago, becoming the Vietnam of software for MS. Its still a mess in my opinion being at beta 2 already and RC1 getting ready within the next couple months. Long story short. Much of what Vista will be capable of performing as an engine OS platform will not be recognized for a couple years until the hardware and software catches up. It is sluggish, bloated and there are still allot of bugs with specific motherboards (RAID ;) ) as well as sound and Audigy in particular. Its really looking more and more like an upgraded XP. We'll just have to wait and see.

If you read one of my other posts you will find I did indeed manage to get Aero until I rebooted my machine...and it worked snappy.
