Is this possible?

I have been trying to find a way of testing on mac brwsers withoutpurchasing a mac and have come up with pearpc emulator, I know I can run osx on it but I am cheap and want something free and legal.

Apple have released mac os 7.5.3 as a free download but it comes in 19 seperate parts as .bin files

I would like to create a .iso or dmg image file so I can boot it in pearpc on my xp pc

so is this possible? can I concatenate these .bin files and convert them to iso or dmg somehow?

my only other option is to order a panther cd for less than 20 dollars and make an iso image of that

largefoot: Free is one issue, legal is another.

If you want legal, buy a mac.

PearPC is illegal for the same reason what we're doing on here is illegal. Apple licenses it's OS to run on only Apple hardware. Nothing except owning a mac will make it legal.

That being said, pretend everything is legal and use the most efficient solution.

BTW, 7.5.3 is free, but you still arent legally allowed to run it in an emulator.

Though Apple doesnt seem to have a problem producing software that will run competing operating systems. Hypocrisy? Apple?!

What software is Apple producing that allows users to emulate other OSes, or otherwise violate their EULAs? BootCamp is not virtualization software in any sense; Windows XP runs natively on Intel Mac hardware for the same reason it runs on other hardware: it was designed to.

The only thing Apple provides is drivers for its specific hardware.

well, I'm 100% Anti-Steve Jobs, so I guess that makes you sound like a brainwashed Apple apologist to me. Which probably isnt true at all.

Apple doesnt want anyone running Mac OS on a Dell, because it will damage Apple's hardware sales; But Apple doesnt seem to have a problem with allowing people to run Windows on it's hardware, thus depriving Dell (or whomever) of sales.

You dont see that as an unfair advantage?

Apple doesnt need to compete with anyone in the hardware market. Apple computers are the only ones you can run their software on, at least without hearing from their lawyers and the DMCA lackeys.

Not at all. Without getting into a lot of detail, Apple is a huge, monolithic multinational corporation (one that's cashing in on being "hip", and making quite a pretty penny in the process), and for that I'm fundamentally opposed to them. But I'm still in favor of being honest.

Um. I think you're confused. Windows isn't owned, produced or developed by Dell. It's a Microsoft product. Apple is in competition with both, but given it is first and foremost a hardware company (for reasons I don't really understand, but I digress), it is more likely to use leverage in competition with Dell than in competition with Microsoft. If Apple sells a computer, what do they care which OS you run on it? But you're essentially holding them up to an unrealistic standard. They're a corporation. Their job is to make money. They're doing it more or less the same as any other corporation would.

That isn't a defense of Apple, it's just to point out that it's not evil or hypocritical, it's exactly what they'd be expected to do.

You dont see that as an unfair advantage?
Dell is a major corporation, they can fend for themselves.

Apple doesnt need to compete with anyone in the hardware market. Apple computers are the only ones you can run their software on, at least without hearing from their lawyers and the DMCA lackeys.
Except they do need to compete in the hardware market, it's corporate law. Part of how they do so is by using their lawyers and DMCA lackeys to prevent users from using their software how it was designed to be used.

But all of this is kind of a red herring. Yes, Apple has a stupid EULA. Yes, they use that to their advantage. Yes, it's competition with Dell. No, it's not unfair to Dell. Dell would do the exact same thing, and frankly they can both take a flying leap.

Obviously microsoft doesnt care if people are buying windows because they like the way the disk looks, or just want to have some microwave fun. Microsoft cares that people buy it's software.

Dell can sell a computer with Windows.

Apple can sell a computer with Mac OS, but that runs windows.

Why cant Dell sell a computer that runs Mac OS? Because Apple wants be anticompetitive.

Is $2000 for Mac a better deal than the Equivalent Dell that costs half as much? If you want to run OS X Apps as well as Windows Apps, yes, yes it is.

I call that unfair business practice.

Imagine this. Let's say that Microsoft calls up Dell and says "Hey Dell, we want to sell you the exclusive license to Windows. You give us twice what we would normally charge, in exchange. Because the only computer that runs Windows is a Dell, all other PC manufacturers will crumble, and everyone will be forced to own a Dell if they want to run Windows."

There's a reason why Microsoft isnt allowed to do that. Apple shouldnt be either

And Apple doesn't care if people buy a Mac because it runs OS X or because it looks pretty. They just care that people buy their hardware. I don't see your point.

Dell can sell a computer with Windows.

Yes. Those are the terms of Microsoft's license.

Well, not really. It's because Apple wants to be competitive.

Is $2000 for Mac a better deal than the Equivalent Dell that costs half as much? If you want to run OS X Apps as well as Windows Apps, yes, yes it is.
Uh. Yeah. And?

I call that unfair business practice.
Really? Because none of the businesses involved seem to agree...

Why on earth would they do that? Microsoft benefits from their position.

There's a reason why Microsoft isnt allowed to do that. Apple shouldnt be either
Of course they're allowed to do that. The antitrust suit determined that Microsoft couldn't use their marketshare to force people to use their products; not that they couldn't use their marketshare to determine what types of hardware they will or won't support. Microsoft doesn't produce the hardware, remember?

Apple's not a software company, they're a hardware company. They're in business to sell hardware, and they're doing exactly what any other company in their position, Dell included, would do.

I'm not an Apple apologist. I loathe Apple. But I don't have a vendetta that blinds me to the bigger picture. Every corporation is in business to make money, and will do anything they can to do so.

"Microsoft's a software company"

"Apple's a hardware company"

Apple's both... or their hardware would run windows (or Linux or Be)

Apple is unique, in that they write software for their hardware, but they are primarily a hardware company, and their software offerings are meant as vehicles to sell their hardware. Their hardware does run Windows (and Linux), and probably would run Be if any other modern PC does too.

Anyway, I see we're off into semantics and you haven't said anything about my point that Apple's doing what any other corporation would do, so I take it you accept that point, which was really far more important than the semantics of what makes Apple primarily a hardware company.

Can we drop this now?

Was how to legally and freely run modern Mac Browsers on something other than a Mac.

There's no way to do so that's legal and free.

I'll give a quarter to anyone who can prove me wrong

Actually, that's not true for two reasons:

I explicitly said "Not on a mac"

and the original poster was looking to spend no money.

A better solution that passes his semantics would be to say "Borrow your girlfriend/boyfriend/mother/neighbour's mac, and use it" ;-p

It still wouldnt pass mine.

You can't run System 7 on PearPC anyway, as PearPC emulates a G3 (if I remember right)

You'll need to use basiliskii for running that system. You'll still need a Mac OS ROM, and without a $10 investment (for a used iivx to read out its ROM), you're still going into illegal territory.

He's looking for Free and Legal. Hackintosh is Free but not Legal.

I am not certain what Apple's policy is on running System 7 (which wont work for his needs anyways) on Bassilisk with a genuine 68k rom... They probably forbid it, but since 68k isnt worth even thinking about, they probably dont bother jumping down Basilisk's throat.

Actually Apple's hardware DOES run Windows, and Linux for that matter. :hysterical:

But being a hardware company does NOT mean they have to bend over and do whatever the multitude of OS companies want them to do. They sell hardware, and since Linux is beyond stupid* and Windows is hazardous, they make their own OS for their own hardware. Apple introduced the GUI OS, there was nothing else before then. I'm glad they leave Dell to fight with M$ and stay out of that hardware mess, they do it fine on their own and it's fine by me. It all just works.

=)

* Yes, Linux is beyond stupid. Why after so many years (and many hundreds of contributors) do I STILL have to recompile my kernel to get the @#$%ing wireless to work?

Linux is a toy for people who constantly want to struggle for a working system.

Vanilla OS X is a toy for people who constantly want to struggle for a working system; but at least it's fun. Editing kexts to make stuff work is what gets me off (among other things)

Btw, the point I was making was that if Apple was just a hardware company like Dell is, they wouldnt write software, would they?

I think Apple is evil and Steve Jobs is the devil. But they do make a nice OS.

actually DESKTOP linux can be a toy, but to me the process of "struggling" for a working os is a great learning aid. but linux is a really strong server OS and that is where it shines.

it also seems that when u get osx running good (and make a drive image for backup) that it isnt actually much differant from a genuine mac. IMO

In reality the there is no free way to do what u wanna do. You could always make friends online with mac users who cud test it for u?

I say forget the DMCA and ignore Apple's EULA and download a copy of Jas 10.4.6.

Maybe if Hackintosh marketshare gets huge, while Macintosh marketshare stays the same or gets smaller, Apple will get it.
