Ok, well, I was going to buy a MACBOOK but this vendor was out so I spent some money on a Intel D945GNTLKR motherboard and DDR2 and am using a ATA drive (7200) rpm drive.

The difference between AMD SSE2 emulation and SSE3 on Intel is night and day.

I know that the GMA is no gamer solution, but it loads Gargage Idvd, Final Cut Universal no problem. QE and CI supported right from the install 10.4.5 IMHO, basically, I've built a iMAC or MACBOOK with this mother board.

There are some questions though.

During boot up I get a com.apple.driver.appleHPET error that I never saw before.

On the flip side, after installing the OS, the last step said OPTIMIZING SYSTEM before it was finished installing (THE OS) - never saw that before.

So with that said, does anyone know why and how to get the onboard ethernet to work as well as sound? I don't reallllllllllly need the sound as I am using a HIGH END MACKIE firewire device for my audio anyway, but want to have it working just the same.

Also, I'm not sure but I think this motherboard is capable of three (2) front FIREWIRE ports, I would like some advice on where to get the ADD2 card too. The widgets also SCREAM too and are very very fast.

MAC OS X sees it as 4.0 GHZ. Not sure if this board can overclock - I do have onboard audio enabled as well in the bios.

Plus I will xbench to see what I get......and post a follow up - - in hopes that in the mean time I can find some anwsers or replies and also WHETHER OR NOT to UPGRADE to 10.4.6 and the reasons why or why not!

Help appreciated!

No I don't...looked at the board (still not in case) no signs of it anywhere,....:-(

Edit...no manual really...

Anyway, Intel Pro 10/100 and Intel High Def 7.1 Audio...what ever that means....not sure if its from them or not!

You should have Intel 1000 ethernet and Sigmatel 9220 sound.

http://support.intel.com/support/motherboa...b/CS-020710.htm

Sound info:

http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?s=...indpost&p=38182

Use your data to modify kexts per the Azalia link in my sig.

Someone else said to be sure you have the latest BIOS.

Opppppssss......

I was wrong, it is the 945GTN Media 10/100, the only difference is the ethernet I believe plus better sound....

I'm wondering the following though-since the GMA works so well, no glitches, superfast, scrores well in benchmark, is there a motherboad with INTEL CHIPSET ONBOARD GMA (with PCI express GPU for future) but WITH 1394b? My AMD motherboard has it. Wondering if would have seen an increase in speed with Nvidia GPU and onboard SSE3? The difference, for example was like this, I loaded the kext file from mac vidia but since my AMD only had SSE2, it ran emulation, I would play garage band and it would stop 2 seconds later after hitting stop - now with intel, it's instant, plus I'm assuming that it will show me (GMA) what at least the MACBOOK will do if not better due to the higher clocked 3.0 CPU dual core.

So, is there a motherboard with on-board GMA and 800Fire Wire? I want it for final cut, although 400 should be fast enough for an external drive though right? Also, if there is indeed another motherboard with GMA, as long as it had INTEL CHIPSETS, it should work just as good out of the box, no?

I made this purchase due to the MB being sold out and am glad I did, it's much faster than an ibook, it now has 2GB dual channel DDR and when the drivers come out for the ATI express that allow spanning, high resolutions and so on, I can get a new card and use the drivers here.

Will the new CPU's from intel be the same pin config? In addition, since I am not using the high end audio anyway, I wonder if my money would be better spent on a cheaper board? This board was about $132.00.

I suppose any GMA will due. Also read in the news, Intel is working on a GPU that is supposed to be really good, at least from a dedicated P.O.V. and support direct 10, pixel shaders, etc.

Thoughts?

I built this mainly to a) learn logic b)final cut/motion and c) Digital Performer.

thanks again

During boot up I get a com.apple.driver.appleHPET error that I never saw before.

This is normal, only the Core Duo chips support HPET (which is some power management system).

So with that said, does anyone know why and how to get the onboard ethernet to work as well as sound?

Your ethernet should work without hacking. Have you updated to the lastest Intel BIOS? If not do so now.

Audio works (albeit out the wrong jack) by installing the 10.4.3 version of AppleHDA.kext.

I would like some advice on where to get the ADD2 card too.

Try this: http://google-cnet.com.com/HP_DVI_ADD2_Ada...9-30971129.html

MAC OS X sees it as 4.0 GHZ. Not sure if this board can overclock.

This is normal, that board does not overclock, the hacked OSx86 is just misreading the CPU information.

I have the same 945GNTLKR mobo.

Actually, the audio on this board is Sigmatel 9223. Download the AppleHDA.kext from the link http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?sh...l=sigmatel+9223. Rev1 works good.

For the ethernet, just edit /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleIntel8255x.kext/Contents/version.plist by adding 0x27dc8086 under IOPCIMatch. And /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleIntel82845.kext (or something similar) must be removed to get AppleIntel8255x.kext loaded.

Edit: the audio is 9220. Sorry!

Well my board is the D945GNTLR, should I go with a cheaper brand? Asus, or something with On-Board GMA? Would it work as well with intel chipset, or should I stay with Intel? Saw a new board yesterday, can't recall the name but it was from Intel and said VISTA ready.........

Is it possible to update the BIOS within MAC OS X? Will double check to see what bios I have and report back.

I just have the feeling I am paying for the 7.1 when I will never use it (audio via FW Mackie).

Let me know.

Thanks!

Well my board is the D945GNTLR...

Which is it? The D945GNTLR or D945GNTLKR?

Other brands are good too, and necessary for overclocking.

Not exactly, you download an ISO from Intel, burn it and boot it to update the BIOS.

Mines the NTLR, and I do have the latest BIOS already installed! NT94510j-86A May 06.

Did not work out of the box.

Doing this, fixed it and is now online - however, note the second step say to edit in version but the actual IOPCIMatch item is in the info.plist.

Ethernet working.

:D

For the ethernet, just edit /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleIntel8255x.kext/Contents/version.plist by adding 0x27dc8086 under IOPCIMatch. And /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleIntel82845.kext (or something similar) must be removed to get AppleIntel8255x.kext loaded.

Also, you pointed out that the com.apple.driver.appleHPET is normal and only for dual core, don't I have a dual core?

Did a little SPEED TEST getting around 364K per second, so safe to say it's working - -

The only thing that concerns me is that the box was reduced by a few dollarsm wondering, since it has FIREWIRE two FRONT PORTS, should it not have come with FIREWIRE FRONT and USB FRONT connectors or would that come with a new case?

PS While I'm at it, what is a good newsreader similar to Free Agent for PC and easy to use. Most I've looked at for mac always seem difficult! Anything UB?

A FEW PROBLEMS TO REPORT

First off, I can't boot from SATA drive even though it sees it in the OSX, I can read/write to it, etc.

Reformatted it, virgin install of OS, tried Super Duper

http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/Sup...escription.html

The above is supposed to back up your existing drive (presently on ATA 100) as this is all the board supports, to a replica of the drive and programs..

IT GETS all the way to the end then says, unable to make bootable.

I also have a few other quirks.....

I get slow speeds, not too bad, but know that the ATA is not configured right, a good test that I did tonight on a slower HD macbook, was I opened garage band (mine opens much faster) but when you place a loop onto a track, the MB was less than a second, mine takes about 1.5 seconds.

In addition, I also tried Macs own Migration Assistant to no avail. It just loaded and did nothing. Its like a cloning program for your disc. Even with the SATA attached by itself with a FRESH OS install, I get a NON SYSTEM disc error on booting up. Of course, I made sure that the settings where correct in the bios (also have the latest bios!).

ALSO if I go to system prefrences and select STARTUP disk I get an error and it closes. The only thing that shows up for a brief second before closing is Network Startup - then crashes! ;)

Also, the PC when it goes to sleep will NOT wake up AS WELL sometimes the keyboard (USB) will stop working and I have to plug it back in but the strange thing is that the USB mouse and FLASH drive attached to the keyboard (Mac type keyboard) still work!:blink:

Lastly, if I click on Deja Vu, I get an error (System Preferences)...so why I know this is a hack n tosh, would like to see what I can resolve before the 14 day return policy kicks in....or rather out.

Thanks

Thanks will check that out but what about the Non-Boot to Serial Issue?

My search pulled up mostly older posts or ATA problems with non intel motherboards.

I get 38 on the Xbench ATA and 61 with Serial ATA and of course, even though the drives are SMART drives they are not enabled in the Mac OSX (About Mac.More, ATA, Serial ATA)!

Thanks
