As per the title - you know the type, every possible opportunity; they're trying to ram Mac down your throat and prove how superior it is, like it's a religion or a way of life or something. I'm here because I'm interested in building a hackintosh because I'm a long time linux user who's become frustated with a) the lack of progress on the linux UI front (it essentially is nearly the same as it was 5 years ago, unless you want to do some heavy duty hacking yourself) and application support beyond web apps is limited. What if you do find it's a way better way of doing things and become frustrated that everyone assumes you think that because of some sort of brainwashing and refuse to look at it themselves? Most people are so tied to windows that they would even consider TRYING another OS, but Apple supporters are the brainwashed ones? If you find you like it, you will probably see that frustration to some degree, or you may find that it's not for you at all. AlwaysATiger Posted October 22, 2009 Author Share Posted October 22, 2009 I should probably point out the wife had a iBook G4 (till it broke), so I'm not a complete OSX virgin - yes, I thought it was reasonably good, especially iLife suite, hence wanting to try it again. My problem isn't that the product is quite good, I think it is, I just can't stand being told all the time that I should use a mac by smug faced fanboys - I'll make up my own mind thanks. I just don't want to become one of those smug faced annoying people myself, that's what I'm worried about! This seems to have ramped up in the last year or so - don't know whether it's the release of Windows 7, they feel they have to defend their turf or what, but it's almost impossible to mention anything PC related now without being told, you should have bought a mac..... eject Posted October 22, 2009 Share Posted October 22, 2009 i didnt become a fanboy of everything apple. even if i said many times to my friends an co students that OSX is a superior OS when it comes down to simply get a job done without much effort. but often when i'm asked by (i call them computer geeks wannabees) people who are into computers i tell them that i use a bsd distro simply to avoid the discussion, i know what does work best for me and i don't feel that i have to explain this to everyone who obviously never even used osx but thinks he simply knows it's {censored} because he is a computer geek wannabee (who might not even know how to use a command shell of any type, dos oder *nix Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
AlwaysATiger Posted October 22, 2009 Author Share Posted October 22, 2009 That's a good attitude to have imo - it's like a religion, the vast majority of people who have one don't go out of their way to flaunt it and ram it down the neck of others, but then there's the small minority who'll go knocking on people's doors and stand in the street shouting about it. That's what the fanboys are like to me - why the need to do it? I also think that a lot of the naive fanboys actually think that a Mac and a PC are different, not just the same components in a different case running different OS's..... This forum is decidedly less full of raving, drooling fantards, which is good. Super-crazy fanboys of _anything_ is bad. But also consider that they're just the vocal miniority -- a sad effect often witnessed when there's a small, close-knit community. Hangten Posted October 25, 2009 Share Posted October 25, 2009 Its not that hard to figure out that either one is great for certain applications, hence gaming on certain graphic cards. Crysis will bring most cards to its knees. My hd4850 can't play it smoothly @1680x1050 but just a little better cranking the CPU i7 to 3.8ghz or 4ghz. And using SSD's or PCI-e RAID with dual core IO processors will out right work most of the time on a PC without being to picky on the brand. The OS does make difference here and there but without the Hardware and Support to run it on the OS its left in part to what you need to get out of your Computer. I can say TRIM works on Windows 7 not Mac and if you don't know what that is then get to googling and find out what the TRIM command means to SSD's and why its important. I love my Hackintosh but I love my Windows 7 using Xfi audio also. I love the MAC GUI but I love some of Windows 7 easy to use new features like throwing my windows across the screen and they align. I love Gaming on my PC side (HD5870 anyone seen what this puppy can do?). My HD4850 is very old to me and i bought it when it came out. Still i have come to my senses and enjoy using my Computer in either form because i can get out very good things from both. Ubuntu works with my hardware also but for the most part I don't use it very often except to hack secure files on Windows (pkconfig). Ever run DOS? you still can with Hirons boot CD, used it to flash my SSD and to recover data off a drive. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Allthough I have been telling people that OSX is a very good OS, I don't see my self as a moronic fanboy. I still like Windows, since it still has things that OSX can't give me. And I do speak up when I see something that I don't like about Apple and their products. If I ever become one of those "Apple is everything" guys, I'd probably jump off a bridge. Just the same as if I became a "Microsoft is everything" guy. Keeping an open mind to technology is what I strive towards. I use Apple computers and recently I refused to buy another $4000 computer that will get outdated in 6 months. I then decided to build me a PC/MAC that can be updated easily. Forget charging for faster CPU's Overclock! Forget about Hi RAM prices - My 12 GB of DDR3 1600 RAM was $200. Go on apples Store site and configure a 4 core (single processor) with 2.66 Ghz processor, 1 TB disk drive and 12 GB RAM and 2 Superdrives. Thats $4000 without a monitor. My build cost me $2000 with a great monitor and I am happy as can be. BTW - it;s running at 3.5GHz. As far as Windows goes - I hate it! In all honesty l think l talk about the operating system alot, but it replaced my World of Warcraft addiction, so l guess its probley for the greater good. I don't like Apple or Microsoft for different reasons, but some products these companys create are a leap forward in technical standards. Granted some are old technology renamed to make them sound new. Am l a Hackntosh fanboy, l would say 50 / 50, am l an apple fanboy? no not really. I switched from running windows as my primary OS to Mac OS X. But like many others here, there is a need, small if ever to have Windows on another partition for some Applications and Games that can't be ported to Mac OS X via (Wine, Crossover, Cider) or available as native versions. My enjoyment is this community and learning new things about an operating system l never used / nor wanted to for so long, only to find it's not as bad as l thought. It's great software. And that is a fact. Otherwise why would we bother and make a hackintosh? I liked what to me was easy to use and stable system. at the time a Mac was to expensive for me to buy. so looked into. a Hackintosh. Build which i find a enjoyable hobby. I will at times use windows. but I prefer Mac. True Story. a close family friend. in her late 70s used to have a windows pc. but was afraid to use it as she got the BSOD.and it spooked her I replaced it with a second hand 27inch iMac. she loves it. for its ease of use and no blue screens to scare her from using it and its helped her. in a lot of way from cake recipes to Facebook Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
