Processor Upgrade Question

I'm currently running 10.6.1 (vanilla install) on my GA-G31M-ES2L hack. Right now I'm using the Pentium 2.8 GHz Dual Core, but I'm thinking up upgrading to the Core 2 Quad Q9550..I'm just wondering if this will cause any problems with my current install? Will have have to rebuild the DSDT after upgrading? Typically should updating the processor require any additional system changes or will everything just work OOB?

It should just work. I upgraded from a P4 model 651 to a Core 2 Duo E8500 without problems when I was running 10.5.

If your CPU aliases have been removed from the DSDT, they will not reappear there by themselves! But hey, logic thinking only goes so far ;)

I still think it's a good idea though to redump your DSDT tables anyway, you can use Everest Corporate Edition to do it under Windows, or a Linux live CD (google for the instructions, I've never done it but I've seen the info several times around the scene forums).

The reason for this is that if you try to do it under OSX, it will just read your already patched DSDT instead of reading it from the BIOS.

Then use a file comparison tool to see if there are any changes after installing the new CPU - just in case. Of course the main difference will be the stuff that's already patched in the old DSDT, but look for other things. A good file comparison tool will highlight the differences for you so you can spot them easily. I use WinMerge, I'm sure there are good, free ones available for OS X too.

After installing the new CPU check the CPU settings in the BIOS, make sure all CPU features are enabled - except CPUID limit.

Good luck.
