Applications won't start

Certrain programs on my machine, notably the Bom file archive utility, Preview, DiskImageMounter, Stuffit, and several others have had instances where they refuse to launch when an associated file is double clicked and instead only bounce endlessly in the dock. I've found that I can often get around this by opening the application directly from its home directory and then accessing the file from within the app.

Of course, all of this is fixed by a reboot, however, eventually the behavior comes back. Ideally, I would like to find the cause of this problem and eliminate it. It's annoying to have to reboot the machine or go through the process of opening the file from withing the application rather than simply double clicking on it.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

you using a vanilla kernel or patched one ??

Sorry, I should have listed my system specs. I'm using a vanilla kernel.

For future reference, I based my system on the recent Lifehacker guide and it matches it almost exactly. The relevant components are:

GA-EP45-UD3P v1.6 FB motherboard

GeForce 9800 GTX+

Trendnet TEG-PCITXR Ethernet adapter

I'm using Vanilla 10.6.1 (32-bit mode) with the following kexts in my extra folder:

ALC889a.Fix kext

Disabler kext

fakesmc v2 kext

IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector

LegacyJMB36xSATA

NullCPUPowerManagement

OpenHaltRestart

Sleepenabler

and the DSDT.aml from the Lifehacker guide
