Random Beach Balls in UI

I have my eeepc 900a working pretty much flawlessly now on 10.6.1 just one thing kind of bothers me about if I got my install right or not. Whenever I am running an app it can suddenly become unresponsive for 2-10 seconds and I see beach balls randomly. One scenario I'm seeing is in slingplayer when I startup I can watch some video and decide I want to change the channel. Suddenly I see a beachball that goes for around 10 seconds and then I get control again. The whole time the video in the background is playing flawlessly and I can tab out of the app without issue. This can happen in other applications as well and when I switch from one application to another the new application may be responsive and when I return to the previous it may still be in an unresponsive state. Something I have noticed to is when I see this behavior the HD light is usually on or pulsing, I have 2GB of ram and am barely scratching 600MB of that when running apps so while swap was my first suspicion I can't imagine why the system would swap with almost a gig and a half free memory. Anyone have any ideas what might be the culprit and if this is pretty much standard or not?

I have the same issue.

Beachball in an app, app reported as unresponsive in console.

But I thought I had a bad hdd, since from time to time I can hear some drive noises, while not doing any hdd access.

I can hear it clearly as I have 15krpm sas drives that are rather noisy.

I'll try disconnecting the drives I don't need to see if I still have this issue.
