HELP! i have a problem switching the resolution as my system preferences window closes when i select display. ive tired repairing permissions which unfortunalty didnt help.

is there any way to repair this or at least force osx into 1280x800x32@60? I've tried adding the command to the startup but it didnt do anything.

edit: if it helps, sound and mouse & keyboard panes do the same thing

a very smart man told me about this:

Fix Missing Menu Items and Crashing System Preference Panels:

If you mistakenly attempt to patch the system files more then once (as in hitting the ‘Enable Front Row’ button multiple times) you will end up corrupting two important files. Mac OS X will then have missing menu items and the Keyboard and Sound preference panels will crash when opened. The fix is simple:

Download the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update from Apple.

Use Pacifist to open the updater package and select and install only these two specific files (folders):

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BezelServices.framework/ /System/Library/LoginPlugins/BezelServices.loginPlugin/

Restart. You may not need to restart if you see the changes/fix occur immediately.

Tips On Using Pacifist

Mount/open the MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.6PPC.dmg disk image.

Open the package file MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.6PPC.pkg with Pacifist from the disk image (insure that it is in fact the combo update).

Select the Find button and enter “BezelServices.”

Under the Search Results panel, select the folders BezelServices.framework and BezelServices.loginPlugin.

Select the Install button located in Pacifist’s top-right corner.

If prompted by Pacifist, select to replace all files.

Restart.

Did this ever work for anyone?

Thanks!

When I tried it and want to open keymouse / sound prefpane, it was said that cannot open prefpane. What happen here ?

it may be a seperate problem then. this fix was mostly set out to fix the users who had the system preferences crash as a result of applying the front row patch. I dont belive its a universial fix im afraid.

Well I never applied front row patch...

My problems are in System Preferences - when I select startup disk, all I see is network drive then it crashes, in addition, I can't boot to SATA drive and MIGRATION assistant just hangs and hangs.

cheers, and advice if possible!

This didn't work for me, however the only preference that won't open is Network. I have found, though, that the above method made it so Security, Keyboard & Mouse, and Sound all now open a dialog box saying they won't work, and they had worked previously so I'm not sure what went wrong there. The network error is different because it just crashes System Preferences.

All of the sudden I couldn't get into the sharing preference pane.

This is what I did.

Inserted the JAS DVD.

Ran Pacifist 2.0

Clicked the button (Open Apple Install Packages)

Picked the Disc from the menu.

Waited for it to read all the packages.

Clicked find

entered the next line

sharingpref.prefpane

It found a ton of different versions, mostly different langs.

The AMD one was on the bottom, but I need the first one on the list.

It was located in essentials.pkg

I highlighted it and clicked Install.

I needed to perform the task as admin etc

I also needed to confirm the replacement of files.

Rebooted and it worked.

While this might not fix your problem, it did fix mine.

I know this has been up here awhile, the last entry (2006) by Willgonz worked for me, slick and the first time. OSX 10.6.5, newest version of Pacifist, from an OSX 10.6.3 install disk. If you're still out there Willgonz, thanks.

After "find" Sharingpref.prefpane there was only one iteration showing (all prefpanes but only one labeled sharingpref. Install, restart, bingo. It's up.

Thanks all,

John
