So I have a Dell 755 (E6550 @ 2.33ghz, 1gb ram, ATI HD 2400) and I've been following this guide to install SL.

I've gotten to the boot screen and it gives me an Unsupported CPU family error and kernel panic.

Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks.

Okay! I've gotten further. I've got SL 10.6 installed on my Dell Optiplex 755. I followed the same instructions as the previous poster, but the earlier version including the "do it by hand" work in Terminal. And, I did *not* install his Extra folder, from the Zip, as that caused an immediate crash on boot.

But, I followed the instructions to get the SL DVD onto the USB drive, then I followed the instructions with Chameleon RC3 to get things installed. IIRC, I even used the chameleon /boot, rather then the PC_EFI /boot, but I may be wrong. I tried both and don't remember now.

That got it loaded, but I just got a cursor, the installer never finished coming up. A gray screen with a working cursor, none else. So, looking for a lot of information online, I ended up getting the fakesmc kext, and created a /Extra/Extensions.mkext with only that one kext in it. After that, I could boot, and install. Many things don't work, like reboot, but I was doing that by hand.

After the next boot, the drive selector came up and now showed the new disk I'd installed onto. I select it, and it boots. But, the network isn't working, and it appears the display isn't working.

I have a 2.2 Ghz Core 2 Duo (according to the System Profiler), and have the ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT. I need to track down drivers for the HD 2400 XT, and then likely other things like ethernet and likely sound. (Haven't hooked anything up to even see if sound is broken, but other people have reported that alot.)

Thanks. I'll try to watch here if people have questions.

hi there

I have a 2.67 8GB ram on my Dell 755

basically what I did was to install 1.6 using the "Install 10.6 within 10.5" Method

and it actually works booting up with camerlon RC3

and I can only boot into both 32Bit and 64Bit

but since I wasn't abel to get 64 Bit drivers for the onoard Lancard . Sound card and display , IO(for time machine fix)

I can only use 32-bit and working Almost everything (sleep don't work at all)

reboot works . shutdown works ... even UPDATE WORKS(still need to patch camerlon RC3 after update or won't boot)

I got my ATI 4850 card from my gaming PC to this dell 755 and installed netik's method driver and now everything is Fried.

my Lan works perfectly ,, I can Ping local network . I can Ping outside world such as yahoo.com google.com apple.com

but I cannot browse from safari ....

once i take the ATI 4850 away and it works just fine (of couse I get screw up screen, not Whole screen, like jumpy , unstable ... )

anyway I will give this method another go for installing on a clean HDD ...

I really want to install 10.6 on my Dell 755

will keep this post updated too

I have everything working an Optiplex 755 (BIOS A16) with 10.6.2 except for sleep. If I select Sleep from the Apple menu everything turns off and the front light blinks. At this point there is no USB power and the only way to turn it on is to use the front power button. This will start it up, but there is still no video and no USB. I have to hold the button to power it off so I can restart it again. Anyone have a solution to this sleep problem?

I have the same basic problem, although reboot and shutdown don't work for me either. Actually, I've noticed that if I say shutdown, it goes into the process as always, and the next morning is shut down. So maybe there's just a *long* wait in there somewhere. But I know when I need to do something, I always hard power cycle it after telling it to reboot or shut down.

I don't care as much about sleep, but I would love to get reboot and shutdown to work correctly and quickly. Let me know if you have those working...

Yeah, shutdown worked fine from the start. The only thing left to fix is sleep. Here are my installation details:

Installed retail OSX 10.6.0 using myHack_Installer_1.0.mpkp. The PC started right up. Very easy install. I upgraded to 10.6.2 using software update with no issues. I made the following mods for the hardware:

1) Ethernet (82566) - Intel82566MM.kext installed with Kext Helper. Works fine, including Gigabit.

2) Audio (AD1984) - AppleAzaliaAudio.kext installed with Kext Helper. Works fine, but audio line out only. (No headphone out, mic, or line in.) FYI, I got all of the audio in/out working with VoodooHDA.kext, but the audio out was noisy so I reinstalled AppleAzaliaAudio.kext.

3) Video (Onboard GMA 3100) - 1024x768 only, no QE/CI. Nothing I tried to fix this worked.

4) Video (ATI X1300 128MB) - I installed this card and got all supported resolutions with QE/CI by just adding device ID 7187 to ATI1300Controller.kext.

5) Video (Radeon HD 2400 XT - RV610) - I tried this card, but could only get one output working. I added device ID 94c1, but this only fixed the resolution and did not provide QE/CI.

6) Video (EVGA 7800GT) - I installed this card and everything is working great. Both outputs with QE/CI!

Last night I discovered that AppleLPC.kext was not loading. I fixed it by adding device ID 2914 to AppleLPC.kext. (Other's on this forum said they used device ID 2918, but it didn't work for me. Different version of the chipset.) I thought this would fix the sleep problem, but unfortunately it did not. This is a big problem for me since I frequently use sleep on all my computers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Reboot works well as well? Interesting. I'm not sure what I've done different from what you described. Did you make any DSDT changes? I know I *had* to make at least the one that prevented snow leopard from messing up the BIOS checksum. I assumed I would have to fix the reboot/sleep/shutdown problem in there too. Is that something that myHack_Installer knows how to do, and did for you?

2) Audio (AD1984) - AppleAzaliaAudio.kext installed with Kext Helper. Works fine, but audio line out only. (No headphone out, mic, or line in.) FYI, I got all of the audio in/out working with VoodooHDA.kext, but the audio out was noisy so I reinstalled AppleAzaliaAudio.kext.

Okay. Whatever my built-in audio is, I have it working now, and I'm 99% sure I'm using VoodooHDA. It is very noisy in console output when I look at that when I boot, but I've had no problems with audio noise from it. I've used it with Line Out (to normal powered speakers), and the headphone jack (to headphones). I have to select one, it seems unable to do both, but. Not a huge inconvenience.

5) Video (Radeon HD 2400 XT - RV610) - I tried this card, but could only get one output working. I added device ID 94c1, but this only fixed the resolution and did not provide QE/CI.

I started with this card and had the same problems. I ended up swapping in an nVidia card from a later model Dell desktop, and it worked just fine with the "magic" performed by coding the device properties into the correct profile, supported by either Chameleon, or PC_EFI. I tried so many things over a few weeks there, I honestly forget what does what any more. :-)

Thanks. Good to hear someone has it working at least as well as I. I may want to try a reinstall given your method above.

- Chris

Yes, reboot works fine. I didn't do anything with the DSDT yet. I think the myHack installer made this work. Apparently there are a few advantages coming late to the party. :-)

I too have been trying to get 10.6 installed on my 755 (Hazard SL). Had it running once with everything working (geforce 9600gs@ 1024x768 only resolution, sound, network, front usb, and reboot). I got greedy and wanted to try sticking in my ATI hd4850 when everything went downhill. I got it installed one time but my video was stuck and that same resolution. DUMB me didn't clone the hard drive before I started messing with the evoenabler and ati4000contoller kext. Now I can't seem to get it work AT ALL with this video card. I either get the grey screen or the black screen with white boxes. Has anyone installed using Hazard? Care to share which combination of drivers used during install to get it working?

FYI,

The Q6600 with BSEL mod works perfectly on this board. It was up and running all four cores clocked @ 3ghz! It was fast while I had it running!

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=58361

q6600 @ 3ghz

4gb ocz ram

80gb hd

sata mode ahci in bios

speedstep turned off in bios

intel 82566 (did not have to load kext. picked up during install)

onboard sound (again, install picked it up. appeared to be using the voodoo hda driver. don't think the microphone is working)

After looking at the boot log, I noticed that the there was an error initializing the LPC that I'm guessing will prevent sleep. Here's the output:

ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::registerLPCDriver - WARNING - LPC device initialization failed: C-state power management not initialized

Are there any experts out there that know what might be causing this?

I'm still losing sleep trying to make sleep work on this thing. :( Any experts willing to help?

FYI, I noticed that when I try to wake from sleep using the power button, it will wake up after 2.5 minutes every time. However it's really unstable and will reboot unexpectedly.

Here's an update on the system config:

1. Changed video card to GeForce 9400GT. Works great.

2. Updated to 10.6.4 using the updated SleepEnabler (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=196466).

3. Tried making a DSDT with the USB fix, but it didn't have any effect. See my post here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...8014&st=320

4. Here's a list of what's in the Extras folder. Is there anything I need to add, delete, or update?

EvOreboot.kext

FakeSMC.kext

Intel82566MM.kext

IOATAFamily.kext

IONetworkingFamily.kext

LegacyAppleRTC.kext

NullCPUPowerManagement.kext

SleepEnabler.kext

How did you get the 9400GT to work? EFI? If so, what strings did you use?

Did you have any problems with ethernet and UUID. I can ping by address, but it won't resolve names even though DNS is set properly (nslookup works!) I think it might be related to the _CFGetHostUUIDString error 35 that's documented in several places. Can't do much until I get that fixed.
