SATA Optical Drives become unresponsive

Hi all,

I have a new install of SL but having some issues with optical drives.

I have 2 x SATA DVD drives installed.

1) Pioneer DVR-216

2) Samsung SH-S223B

Both work fine and I can boot from either of them if I need to, BUT . . .

If I leave media in one of them (DVR-216), without accessing for a while, it just shuts off .. no power.

I have to reboot to get them back.

If I play movies or continually access the drives - they stay functional.

If I don't put anything in them, they stay alive as well.

I read in another thread that someone believes (in their case) that having "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" in Energy Saver was the cause of the problem.

Unchecking this option seemed to solve the issue - but not for me.

Any ideas?

Regards

Fish

SOLVED

It turns out it was only the Pioneer Drive causing the issue in my case.

I updated the firmware to 1.09 (from 1.03) on the DVR-216 and the problem went away.

I left media in both drives over night and let the computer sleep.

Both drives work without issue after waking.

I also don't sleep my hard drives.
