Snow Leopard on a DELL XPS M1530

Hi guys,

i couldn't find a thread about dell xps m1530 and snow leopard.

i also got a few questions:

i had iatkos 5i running on my dell xps m1530 for a while. the problem are: not shutdown-possibility and no internet (wifi and ethernet). the internet-problem is not really a problem 'cause i solved this problem with using a usb2lan-adapter for ethernet and a usb2wlan-adapter for wirelessLan.

Are these problems (shutdown, wlan, lan) fixed now or are they still there? maybe it could be fixed with snow-leopard (but i don't know, i am a noob).

after iatkos 7 came out i installed it on my system but it alread does not work perfectly for me. the problem is, that leopard will not start without the dvd in the drive. i burned the dvd with a speed of 2x. extremely slow.

at this time, the shutdown as well as the internet-stuff were still not working. is it fixed meanwhile?

for installing i always used the help of macgirl because she seems to be pretty fit with hackmac on a dell. but i also figured out that every dell-xps-m1530-user had different experiences. one user got it work (for example internet without adapters) others don't.

is there a perfect installation-guide available for installing macOSX-snow leopard on a dell xps m1530 without any problems?

thank you so much for your help

looking forward ;)

Hey overshoot.

i read the contributions starting at page 35 of the thread (where your adress: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...0&start=700 links me). it's pretty interesting, of course. but i am a newbie in mac and all this. therefore i have some further questions you may answer. i would appreciate this:

a) you guys got snow leopard working very well on a xps m1530 (as you wrote). does this includes the ethernet- and, wireless-network,too? what about the shutdown/sleep-function? is it running, too?

:D is it possible to get a tutorial from the beginning? that means: the installation with leopard 10.5.x. i know there are thousands of tutorial here how to install leopard 10.5.x. but what leopard did you use (i would like to have the exact same) and did leopard also worked well on your system, after installation? that means with wlan, lan and shutdown/sleep-function? if so, i would be very thankful if you post a tutorial for exact this.

macgirls tutorials are very good but i always had the problem with wlan and lan (doesn't matter that much because i hat usb-2-lan and -wlan-adapters). but the shutdown/sleep-function never worked for me. that's the main-reason why i didn't install leopard again.

could you help me with this?

thx

Yes I'm working fine on Snow Leopard 10.6 with my M1530!

But it did take me 4 days to get is working that way:-)

To boot the system i prefer efi v9 instead of v10.x.

Is there someone who can tell me where i can upload the kext's which i'm using?

The only thing where i'm searching for is sleep and x64 ata drive support to play dvd's

Could someone tell me if itunes or updating to 10.6.1 will give Kernel panics?

I had due installing the following error: update_dyld_shar

Thanks a lot!

Please send my some information to upload the other kexts

Hi PaulOSX,

does that mean, the shutdown is working fine for you, too? And ethernet as well as wlan are also working?

If so, could you post a little install-guide with all the options you used? Please from the beginning (10.5.x - install and update to snow leopard then) and keep it as easy as possible because i am an absolutely newbie.

thank you very much

Nope shutdown and restart are some Nvidia issues, that are in my opinion never will be fixed... or we have to modify something in the bios...

As far i can see i have no new options for you available as the other owners of a M1530, i have a Dell wireless 1395 Broadcom 4315... (i changed the wifi card)..

I have still one available if your want one...

sorry for confusion about everything fixed.

For other information, NTFS is also working:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=186460

and i installed 10.6.1 and Itunes 9.0 with the DMG without issues! :D

Lovely system now!

Things i love to:

- SLEEP

- SHUTDOWN

- RESTART

- DVD in x64 modus

- MEDIAKEYS

Who has those fixed or nearly?

thats the question ;)

I have an M1530 and have seen some of the TrueMobile 1390s on ebay. They are revsion a03???

Although no one helped me here, for anyone else reading this the card worked fine on Snow Leopard for wireless and was revision a01.

so are there any m1530 tutorials in the works? cus i am having absolutely no luck with SL and Windows 7 on my m1530

Dual Boot Part:

Partition with a bootable (10.5x) dvd. The partitions should be GUID. If you really want MBR, you can install Snow Leopard FIRST on GUID then restore the data to a clean/reformatted MBR partition.

After the restore, install chameleon again so that the partition will boot. You should set the SL partiton as "active" if you want it to be the default boot partition.

m1530 Snow Leopard Part:

1) Restore vanilla dmg to a usb thumb drive or hd. The thumb drive or hd partition should be guid.

2) Download files from this post.

3) Open Terminal, do sudo -s, put in your pass. navigate to

type: "./<path>/snow_installer-m1530/installnow.sh"

Go thru the installer steps. After the installer is done, replace the DSDT with the one in m1530_generic_dsdt folder. This dsdt DOES NOT have SpeedStep which is processor specific. It doesn't have audio or video/graphics injects. It is the bare

minimum dsdt for m1530.

4) Copy Snow_Installer-m1530 to restore location. I put mine in "Optional Installs" folder. Remember!: DO NOT RESTART COMPUTER AFTER SL INSTALL IS COMPLETE.

5) Edit com.apple.boot.plist, the resolution should be the resolution of your screen. The one in this plist is mine.

6) Restart computer, select options which allow you to boot from usb during start.

7) You should be in 10.6 install now.

8) Partition/allocate your hd space in GUID

9) Install SL to the partition of your choice

10) After the install is complete, DO NOT RESTART. Go to terminal from the menubar. no sudo required. do "./Volumes/<name of usb>/Optional \ Installs/snow_installer-m1530/installnow.sh"

Go thru the installer steps.

11) In terminal do

cd /

cd /Volumes/<name of newly created sl partiton>Extra/

rm -RF dsdt.aml

11) Do "cp /Volumes/<name of usb>Optional \ Installs/snow_installer-m1530/m1530_generic_dsdt/dsdt.aml /Extra/

12) In terminal again:

cd /

cd /Volumes/<name of newly created sl partiton>/System/Library/Extensions/

rm -RF /IOATAFamily.kext so that you won't get a kernel panic during boot.

13) Reboot

14) Run kext utility to make caches (faster startup)

15) Reboot, Run in verbose mode and see if you see errors.

Fix your ethernet mac and add your wifi on IO80211.kext plist if needed (I have 1395 so I had to add the id into the plist)

If you want to continue using the generic m1530, then you should try the Native SpeedStep kext (install in /Extra/Extensions then run kext utility again)

if you continue using generic m1530 then you should also using graphics enabler option in com.apple.boot.plist

If you use NativeSpeedStep then you won't need nullcpu kext. The same goes if you have a modded dsdt with speedstep inject, remove nullcpu kext.

I hope this helps.

PS: none of the files are my creation. i edited them to my liking...

Native_Speedstep_snow_leo.zip

How did you get sleep working? I have the same exact system config as yours. Pls Help...:-) ;)

I used a DSDT, to get sleep working. no plist hacks or anything. Do you have the same CPU and graphics cards as me?

Thanks again,

No worries :hysterical: Did the DSDT help?

It works like a charm... Great! My Dell XPS is working great. I just need to setup the mouse pad control.

I just setup Snow Server. (got a retail copy from a friend of mine- $100) and is working great also.

I can now do online banking without the worries like when using Window environments.

Thanks a million.

Great! The DSDT is by timmyj9, you might want to see if there are changes in the future. he is planning on making it work better with the specific process and this dell system.

Has anyone done a Graphics Card Benchmark in SL on the Dell m1530?

For a Dell M1530, WHAT IS NOT WORKING AT THIS POINT IN SNOW LEOPARD?

I'm running OSX Leopard 10.5.4 on Dell M1530 and the USB ports intermittently stop working, sleep doesnt work, shutdown hangs...so im looking to upgrade or at least fix the issues.

Thanks for your input!

Shutdown/Restart/Deep-Sleep (also called hibernate) = not working. everything else is working for me... the internal cam works half-assed. low refresh rates... works fine in win7
