Install stops partway - install DVD spins down

I'm trying to install Snow Leopard from the retail disc (yeah, I know, I'm strange!). I'm doing a clean install on a 15" MacBook Pro (120Gb hard drive, 3Gb RAM) that originally came with Tiger. I had BootCamp on the machine, so I thought I would wipe the drive and do a fresh install. So I booted the DVD, brought up Disk Utility, and did an Erase on the hard drive. That all went fine. I formatted the drive with the defaults.

My problem is that I get partway into the installing process, and it tells me "30 minutes to go", then "29 minutes to go". It stops there. After a little while, the DVD spins down. And nothing more happens.

If I power the machine down and reboot, I get the folder + ? icon indicating that the hard drive isn't bootable. I put in the disc and it boots. I try the installation again, and it does the same thing.

Any suggestions on what I should do to work out what is wrong?

I brought up the log window, and restarted the installation - it is listing the packages it is retrieving. The last one listed when the DVD spins down is com.apple.pkg.Java

The machine isn't dead at this point - the mouse moves, and I can drag the installer log window.
