No Quartz Extreme / Core Image on 9800GTX +

Hi all,

Running a fairly stable Snow Leopard after many hours of work.

The only thing missing is that my graphics/display doesn't show Quartz Extreme / Core Image.

This worked fine for me in Leopard, using an EFI String for my nVidia GeForce 9800GTX+.

However, I don't remember if I had any specific kexts for the video card.

I haven't installed any kexts in SL yet for my video card .. I have an EFI string which gives me a great full resolution picture -- and performance seems to be good .. just no QE/CI.

What am I missing?

are you using the identical string as you used in leopard? they're interchangable...you shouldn't need any kexts if you're using efi strings for graphics, i think the 9800 uses the 8800gtx string...

does it actually say in system profiler that qe/ci aren't enabled? i have the same video card and use efi strings...for me it doesn't say they are enabled(doesnt even mention in system profiler), but i believe that they are because the animations are very smooth and not laggy.

The Device Properties string for the 9800GTX that comes OSX86Tools gives full QE/CI and multimonitor support on 10.6. Geforce.kext caused a kernel panic however when I went to adobe.com to download Flash using Safari, so I don't know how stable it is. I've never had the Nvidia drivers cause a kernel panic before on Leo, at least not that I can remember.

For 32-bit 10.6, use NVEnabler.kext (find it at the ProjectOSX Forums).

I'm staying in 32-bit mode for now so I can use all my old stuff. Even the plist editor in xcode doesn't work in 64-bit mode, wtf.

My system does not specifically say that QE/CI is not supported, it just doesn't list it in the Graphics/Display section of System Profiler like it used to in Leopard.

However, doing more research -- I ran Quartz Debug and it shows in the menu "Disable Quartz Extreme" -- clicking that brings my desktop experience to a grid .. re-enabling it makes it snappy again, so I'm sure Quartz Extreme is working. Also, Core Image Fun House works as expected.

So -- I guess the moral of this story is that the System Profiler on SL no longer shows if Quartz Extreme is enabled properly.

I'm not using NVEnabler (I am using 32 bit) -- perhaps if I did that, it would show up?

I am using the EFI string from OSXTools for the 9800GTX.

Stopped by my local Best Buy and inspected a couple of brand new Mac's with SL and none of them show QE/CI enabled under sys profile just like my Hack. Snow leopard does not show QE/CI enabled, this has been removed from SL and it simply does not say, but indeed Quartz Extreme is enabled ;)

i have this card too but here is the thing... i am a total noob to this coding this but i am a fast learner and want to learn how to fix my current problem....

I have this card, but then final cut pro wasn't working so I started messing with the system and installed an old kext for the card. it went from dying at the splash screen to saying that i had 0vram. {censored}.

so... I believe that i understand the concept of EFI strings and such, but could use a place to watch a video or read up on this with out my brain hurting.

so:

I have SL on with this card but now it's dead. AND I need to get FCP working....

I had exactly the same problem with my hackintosh and resolved it by typing at the chameleon boot arch=i386. The system is then fully recognised as a 32 bit snow and FCP start and work.

Hi there, I am trying to get my 9800 GTX+ to work on Snow Leopard as well. I have tried a bunch of things, and I am not really getting anywhere. If I use GraphicsEnabler with Chameleon, my card correctly identifies as NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+. If I use EFI strings, it identifies as NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX DDL. In either case, I cannot get my monitor to go to 1920x1080 and there is no QE/CI. There are no fancy ripples on Dashboard, and no transparent menubar etc.

I have also tried aqua-mac's kexts and NVinject, and I can get the correct resolution, but still no QE/CI. Can someone please take me step by step through what they did to get their card working? I have spent a long time trying to get this last piece to an otherwise very stable machine.

Thanks!

If you use GraphicsEnabler, remove any kexts you may have installed for video, and remove

any EFI string for video.

I have tried 2 different Nvidia video cards GraphicsEnabler, and each time all I had to do

was add

<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>

<string>y</string>

in my "com.apple.Boot.plist" inside my "/Extra" folder,

Thanks for the reply!

I did a fresh install today (I had messed up my kexts pretty bad). I am now using Chameleon 2.0 RC 4, and I put the GraphicsEnabler in my boot.plist, and still no luck :)

It identifies as an NVIDIA GPU but I still can't get any higher than 1280x1024.

I'm with you ionman; I have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM!

Does anyone out there have a fix?!

Same problem here with my 9800GTX+ 512MB. I used the efi string from osx86 tools. I modified the apple.boot.com.list with arch=i386 and the graphics mode string with 1920x1080. My Snow Leopard install runs fine but no quartz ....

10.6.3 gives support and recognizes the card as a 9800 GTX+. I've got GL/QE and a res of 1600x1200. I've several methods to alter kexts for dual dvi, but this only served to mess things up and take me back to basic res. I reinstalled the 10.6.3 updater, which brought back the one DVI solution.

Can anyone tell me, in laymans terms, how to activate the dual DVI in 10.6.3?

Thanks

You need to inject a proper display-cfg value (You can use NVEnabler, Device Properties String or DSDT injection) and add your video cards device ID to info.plist inside NVDAResman.kext.

Visit the 'NVEnabler' and the 'Guide to all Nvidia boards" topic over at the project OSX forums (find them with google). All the information you need is there.

Well I finally managed to get it working using a graphics string! For those of you that are still struggling with this, I have attached the string that I used. Insert the contents of this file into your /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist file before </dict>. After rebooting I was immediately greeted by my monitor's full resolution and Quartz Extreme/Core Image! I hope this helps!

Thanks!

Hi, could you tell me how you did it?

I have a 8800gts 512MB and tried it with an EFI-String but I also didn't get the QE/CI working.

I don't want to you use any injector (like NVKush or NVenabler).

So please tell us.. or just add the "attached string" you mentioned  so I could compare it with mine.

Thanks, Mad-Macs

I was pretty sure I attached the string as a text file, but maybe I forgot to hit the upload button. Oh well.

I followed the instructions provided by aquamac, here: http://aquamac.proboards.com/index.cgi?boa...&thread=509

He also has a file that should get your 8800gts up and running.

Enjoy!

Sorry to bother you,

but still I didn't get my card fully recognized in SLeo. The best solution I get was with Efi Studio and Snow Leo! All other "Solutions": the aquamac guide with one file from the guide (1) or editing the file to my card (2) or the plist efi studio gave me in Snow Leo (3) and all converted to a hex file with Leopard with gfxutil weren't even close. No QE, CI and no resolution at all!

With the hex numbers EFI Studio gave me in SLeo I can boot and I have my full resolution but indeed no qe/ci.

Now I am a little confused. I followed the guide, used Leopard to convert the plists and still nothing? (

Witch bootloader do you use, maybe there's the problem.

HELP :D

I'm sorry to bother you but my friend got a 9800 GTX+ and didn't have me check how easy it was to use for hackintosh. Anyway could you post that file. I'm sure it would make many peoples lives easier.

Thanks
