looking for a little clarity on Software Update and compatibility

I have at one time installed 10.5.3 on my HP dv8000 with everything but that damn Intel 3945 working.  I am curious to try SL, and wanted to clarify some things.  Maybe someone here can help me out.

1) Software Update through Apple:  Is this still only "safe" if running a vanilla kernel?  Can I use the retail dvd of SL and when the time comes to update to 10.6.1 or whatever just use SU like one would on a legit Mac?

2) The $29 SL upgrade disc, will that allow for a full install without having a previous edition of Leopard in place?  I plan on repartioning and wiping the hdd clean anyway, so if it will do a full install vs. an upgrade, the $29 dvd would work for me (my concious would feel better too).

Thank you in advance for any help.  I appreciate it.  I searched the forums for some of these key terms but never seem to get a straight, clear answer.

1) Vanilla is safer for updates but its always wise to backup your kext files just in case they change stuff - ie the kexts that make your system work as a hackintosh. Its safer then using an outright modified one but you still have to take precautions.

2) Apple doesn't really do "UPGRADE" OS's. Its a full copy this is a question I hear a lot. Only Microsoft pulls stupid stuff like "UPGRADE OS". There are so many things wrong with giving your customers an "UPGRADE OS" Deal that I wont get into.

As for installation - there are currently some different methods to installing SL. One which requires an existing leopard partition to be active in order to run the installer directly from the OS. The second you make a boot disc/modify the original leopard boot disc in order to boot and install from the disc.

I've only tried Option #1 which seems easier then going thru all the boot disc stuff for me personally since I already had a copy of Leopard installed. I had no trouble installing but some issues getting it to boot up once installed - I havent had the time to really figure it out so it may work I just havent worked at it enough. (I have a legit SL DVD btw)

Been using the info at http://www.insanelymac.com for those of u that are curious.

Backup up kexts is a very good idea, thank you for that.  Say I backup the kexts as recommended...do you happen to know what kind of side effects can occur during upgrades that cannot be resolved from just installing the backed up kexts afterwards?

Thank you very much for your input too.
