Can you upgrade from 10.5.1 [ToH] to 10.6 retail?

Currently using ToH 9A581 RC2 Leopard install...

When I installed this a loooong time ago, it worked (with the ol' script patch to make the system boot without a DVD)....

Once I got the machine working, I stopped mucking with it. I didn't even upgrade past 10.5.1 because everything was working well! FWIW, any attempt to upgrade the OS breaks the system. I've learned to be careful and NOT install any of the OS system updates from Apple.

But now, I got me a copy of retail SL (that I used on my Macbook) and was wondering if there would be a way to upgrade my current install to 10.6 without breaking my computer.

Ideally, I'd like to avoid having to start from scratch, as I have everything working quite nicely, including the vid. card and a bunch of software I wouldn't want to re-install.

Am I asking for a miracle here? Or is it possible?

mobo: Intel D915GAV

7300LE GeForce NVidia (by MSI)

2.5GB DDR 400 RAM

SATA 500GB HD (OEM)

IDE (made to run as SATA with an adapter) DVD+R (generic OEM)

Leopard install: ToH 9A581 RC2

More than likely you will be unable to upgrade vanilla. If you are feeling adventurous you can try the AMD modbin kernel method in the thread posted below:

I think the biggest hurdle will be the 915 chipset. I am not sure if it is vanilla capable or not. I personally have a ecs 945GZT-M motherboard with the 945GZ chipest. I was unable to install this vanilla but got it working using the following instructions. I have a second drive so I used that to install first. Keep in mind it was hard getting my base vanilla image to patch. What I had to do is

* Install Snow Leopard from a working leopard machine onto a secondary drive

* Patch the drive to get it up and running in the most basic level of function

* Install Snow Leopard from Snow Leopard again (This is because you will get a permissions issue from installing Snow Leopard from Leopard. Unfortunately I was unable to boot into retail to run the installer. It would kernel panic during install)

* Repatch

* Migrate my settings over from Leopard to Snow Leopard.

If you have a working vanilla imac or macbook you can cut the middle man and just boot retail and install on a separate disk. I did my vanilla install at work and immediately made a clone of it using Carbon Copy Cloner so I can cut that process out. This allows me to have a nice fresh vanilla install of 10.6 to tinker and destroy without touching my working install. It really made life easier for me.

I posted a few more detailed instructions in this thread:

GOOD LUCK!

Good suggestions. Thanks for the advice. I'm also not sure if the chipset can do Vanilla. I do know that it is SSE2 but not 3 and there were a few kext issues when I first got it going.

What did you do to migrate your settings from Leo to SL?

Yes. I migrated my ECS has been vanilla from the Brazilmac method all the way to 10.5.7. The 945gz chipset is very similar to the first mac mini's that shipped on intel. Up until recently I had been able to run this OS with very little effort. It wasn't until 10.5.6 that things changed a little and I had to tinker a bit more when running my update.
