ALC883 Audio

I have finally gotten Snow leopard to install and all my files are set. The last issue is my audio.

I have ALC883. I have tried three things: Voodoo, 10.4.8 ALC883 installer, and targa's HDA enabler file. They all didn't work. I still get no output/input options.

Has anone gotten this 883 to work? If so, please share.

Thanks so much,

SK

Yeah. Mine works fine.

Are you sure you're booting Snow Leopard in 32-bit? Some sound solutions don't work in 64-bit. If you're using Chameleon 2 RC1 with PCEFI 10.1, then SL boots in 64-bit mode by default. You have to specify the kernel flag -x32 to boot in 32 mode.

I have Realtek ALC883 on my laptop. I got sound working in both Leopard and Snow Leopard. I've used 2 different ways:

1) with HDAEnabler, and customized LegacyAppleHDAPlatformDriver and LegacyAppleHDAController all in Extra/Extensions. But this only works in 32-bit mode.

2) Now I'm using a patched dsdt.aml to enable audio and a customized LegacyHDA in Extra/Extensions. That's all. The advantage with this method is that audio works perfect with Snow Leopard in both 32-bit and 64-bit.

VoodooHDA works fine, but you need to put it in System/Library/Extensions and you need to have voodoohdahelper in your applications folder and set to automatically start in the login items.

You need a linux codec dump to know the exact pin configuration for your ALC883. That's if you're customizing the kexts.

Also, it's much easier to get things working on Leopard first. Snow Leopard too easily kernel panics if the permissions are wrong or if a kext is not right.

I don't exactly know how to patch my dsdt for my audio. WHen using one guide, it only had ALC88a and 889. (ACPI patcher)

Well, in that case, the easiest is to use VoodooHDA. You put VoodooHDA in System/Library/Extensions. Repair permissions.

You also need to use the voodoohdahelper file that comes with it. You put the voodoohdahelper file in the Applications folder and you have to set it to start automatically by adding it in the login items.

So, you need both VoodooHDA and voodoohdahelper to be in place for VoodooHDA to work.

I'm stuck with ALC883 on a Foxconn P965 motherboard, and while Intel HD Audio shows up with all the ports under About This Mac, no devices show up under System Preferences > Sound.

How do you patch dsdt.aml? If you could point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks for you time!

You can either use the VoodooHDA like what is mentioned in this thread or alternatively, you can look to this post where a patch DSDT.aml was used together with some Legacy kexts installed on your E/E folder. I got sound working using the latter method.

I'd like to know more about this solution - any good starting points?

I found this guide - are all steps necessary?

Thanks.

Can you upload your LegacyHDA.kext somewhere?

I also have audio in both x64 and x32 using the Voodoo HDA without the voodoohdahelper running during boot up on my P5K-VM.

By the way, my entire Snow Leopard install is running in 64bit mode without any modifications except for the KEXTS IN Extra/Extensions/

That's it how come so many ALC883 users can't get their audio workign with VoodooHDA even in x32 (i386) mode?

I'll see what is missing and post later

I also don't have patches and I'm using VoodooHDA but spdif-out is not working. Could you upload your VoodooHDA64.kext somewhere please?

someone has the spdif out working? VoodooHDA works for in 32/64 bits but i need the spdif out

,so i stay in 32 bit mode with taruga's kext

I have a Asus P5K with ALC883 and got SPDIF working with voodooHDA.

What I had to do was go into the Audio/Midi setup in the Utilitys folder and set the format to 16 bit and 44100khz. Then you have to open the Configure Speakers dialog and asign a channel to each speaker output. Sorry if i got som of the names wrong, im using SL in swedish. Hopes this works for you, the only problem Ive got is that i have to use Plex with the Force digital sound output setting to get AC3/DTS passthrough from movies.

All my kexts are running 64-bit, even those in E/E. You can obtain these kexts from here.

Please follow instructions in this post for getting ALC883 to work using Legacy kexts. You can download the legacy kexts from a link in this post as well.

Hi,

How many speakers do you see when you configure your speakers ? I only have option of 2 speakers. How do I get 5.1 or 7.1 setup ?

I'm using VoodooHDA 0.252.

Thanks

Hari
