anyone have an insight? Also when i run the boot in 64bit half the kexts in my extra folder are giving me errors.

Help?

UPDATE: So far no luck getting it installed on this machine. Can't seem to find the right combination of kexts that fully support the controller inside my computer... anyone else have any luck yet?

i didn't think about the dvd drive being the culprit, ill try that. It seems to be tho that the hackie ioatafamily kext along with its buddies do not have the right device information. It has been sooo long since I've added that info myself, im not sure if i remember how. lol :D

I ran into that error when installing Leopard on my XPS 410. I got around it using a USB-connected DVD drive instead of the onboard one. You might try that out.

@koafc2: I am still using a Dell 410 w/ Kalyway 10.5.1 and would like to upgrade to Snow Leopard when it comes out. Any advice on how I can do this? I love my current setup, and everything has been working great for over a year, but I'm stuck on 10.5.1, and I'm afraid to upgrade as I don't want to screw anything up!!

Also, is it possible to get a setup of Snow Leopard (or any previous version) where I can safely apply point release updates from Apple without blowing up my system?

Thanks,

Brandon

BrandonG:

The best thing I ever did was buy a second hard disk and clone my original drive to that. I put so much tweaking into getting it just right that I couldn't bear to do it all over again. The cloning software is built-in from the disk utility.

So before applying any Apple updates (e.g. 10.5.6, etc), I would make a clone of my disk and then try out updates on the spare disk so I know it would work there.

For my Dell 410, I used Boot 132 and installed my retail Leopard from that. I've been able to update all the way to 10.5.7. But after each update, I have to re-apply my sound drivers (and possibly storage drivers but I haven't run into that scenario yet.)

So my advice is make a disk clone of your installation, get the patches working properly there and don't risk your original setup. Cloning disks from the Disk utility is just a matter of drag and drop and waiting an hour or two.

I've yet to try Snow Leopard yet so I don't have any specific advice about it but I expect there will be a fair amount of driver problems again for the Dell 410.

koafc2: Thanks very much for the suggestions. I have another hard drive ready to go (new) and will do as you suggested. When you upgrade to SL, please let me know how it goes for you. I want to get SL working as soon as possible on my 410 (ideally before I start my graduate program at the end of September).

Thanks again,

Brandon

Guys,

Even when going to 10.5.8 I got 'Still waiting on Root Device', I just had to bring over my *ATA based extensions from my Extensions10-5-7 back up I made. May be the same case with 10.6, but I haven't tried it yet.

Also note: I'm running twin 69.9 GB Raptors in Raid 0 and I have a spare Terabyte drive I use for testing my installs. Recommend backups for sure.

I got a copy of SL and will try to give it a shot when I get a new 1 TB drive to backup my current config. It should arrive sometime next week.

Someone should start an XPS 410 thread for SL so we don't keep polluting this one. B)
