lynnlovestennis Posted August 25, 2009 Share Posted August 25, 2009 Trying to diagnose some start-up problems I'm having with my MBP and would really appreciate some help. What happens is that when I hit the 'power' button, it either does a partial start-up, or it goes straight to black and the fans spin wildly. When I say 'partial', I mean that it attempts to start-up and then peters out into the black screen/fan spin mode. It usually takes me a good 20-30 mins in the morning to get her running, which usually includes doing numerous PRAM and SMC resets. Once she gets going, she's fine. I've reinstalled Tiger (archive & install), and repaired permissions. I've run hardware check, which came up with no problems. And I've dug around in the logs, much of which is obviously greek (and even tho I'm fairly intelligent, I don't speak greek unfortunately ). I thought it had something to do with kextcache crashing, which seemed to be symptomatic (see previous thread here), but I was sadly mistaken. If anyone can help me figure this out, I would really, really appreciate it. I lost my job, and money's super tight right now, so I can't afford to take her into the shop. lynnlovestennis Posted September 10, 2009 Author Share Posted September 10, 2009 Bumping this again in the hopes that some kind soul can help me out since I'm having a heckuva time diagnosing this. My MBP is now randomly dying, and did so a little while ago. On restart I looked at the system log and there is nothing in there from when the event occurred so it's hard to indicate a cause. The crashes are not the kernel panic kind I've read about with the black screen of death "please restart". It just blacks out, and the fan spins wildly. I've recently run memtest and aht with no results found. I've also tried reinstalling Tiger (archive & install) again. No dice. Please. I can really use some help. What am I missing??
