Dell Inspiron 530 Success?

Hello there bleeding edge OSX86'ers,

Anyone managed to install Snow Leopard onto the Dell Inspiron 530 yet?

If I recall the mobo is an Intel based product with ICH9R chipset, AL888 sound, etc etc, sometimes bundled with ATI 2600 etc (mine is).

If anyone has any help, experiences on how to do it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sys

Yes, but if you dont want to patch any vanilla kexts, you have to use pc efi v9 + snowboot and set your bios to ahci mode, else using anything newer requires you to use a leopard intelpixata.kext

Also, i used an 8600gt so I'm not sure how your graphics card will go

How did you change your Bios to AHCI on the DELL 530, because on my Dell 530 bios screen it does not provide that option, it only shows IDE and RAID.

I've got my Inspiron 530 running fine with Snow Leopard; I'm using VoodooHDA 64, netkas's ApplePIIXATA fix and an EFI string for my Nvidia graphics. Also, I copied my DSDT.aml from my Leopard install over, and I'm using a USB ethernet dongle for network.

I followed this guide:

and added the items above. My only wish right now is for a better Intel ATA driver, right now I can't see SATA 5 or 6 under SL

Hi,

I followed the guide and successfully managed to trash my 10.5.6 install, I think it went wrong on the boot section...

Just re-installed 10.5.5 to get an OS to work with again, what I could do with is an Inspiron specific instruction as the guide listed above is good but it does have several areas that are confusing.

Anyone oblige please?

Thanks,

Sys

@rjohnst2: That guide you linked above didn't work for me. Maybe the problem was my DSDT.aml. I ran the command line tool to generate the DSDT.aml and I ran it without any options. Is there any chance you could share your DSDT.aml?

My install has gotten further using the blackosx's guide but I get kernel panics during or after the video. I just used the same DSDT.aml with blackosx's instructions.

I am also using a nVidia graphics card (8600gts) and a USB dongle for network for my 10.5.7 Leopard install. But my Leopard install is hacked kernel so I never generated a DSDT for it. Vanilla install is trickier on this machine. There are so many guides for other motherboards. None for this one.

Mmm

I cannot seem to get beyond breaking the boot side of the install here...

Anyhow I think it maybe a futile exercise at the moment as I have an ATI 2600XT and this card does not have any functioning Snow Leopard drivers for it available at the moment (so I believe).

Guess I will just have to wait.

I copied my DSDT.aml over from my Leo installation and that worked fine.

As for the KP's after boot, boot into safe mode (-x) and then run Kext Utility, which will repair all permissions and rebuild the Extensions.mkext file. Then you should have no more panics.

OMG that was it. I can't believe I was so close and was about to give up.

I did as you said and booted into safe mode. Went through the wizard and then BAM! there was snow. I ran Kext Utility and rebooted into normal mode and everything worked. No KP at all.

My sound and ethernet did not work and I couldn't access my internal HDD so I couldn't get the kexts. But other than that everything seemed to be functional. I need to get those two working and then copy it over my internal HDD after partitioning it as Guid. Then I would need to transfer my settings and apps from Time Machine and then install Windows for dual boot and be all done.

Story so far, for other 530 owners:

I ran the oinstall.mpkg after mounting the DMG as mentioned in the blackosx guide in the tutorial's section. Unchecked everything except base system install and it installed ok (it crashed earlier when I had some other choices selected). After that I install Chameleon to the Cham partition as explained in the guide. Then I built the dsdt using the commandline tool with newHpet option. I have not done the CMOS reset fix as mentioned in the guide but I don't know if it will cause problems yet. Then I copied fakesmc and nullcpuPM kexts from the support files provided with the guide. Then I built the com.apple.boot.plist and entered the UUID's as explained the guide. Also copied the SMBIOS and entered the UUID. Everything is in the blackosx guide.

After that I booted and got kernel panics and following rtjohn's advice above fixed those. I am off to fix sound and ethernet next. Good luck to all and enjoy.

Edit: Attached dsdt.aml in a zip file. Thanks craig.

PS: Tried uploading the DSDT.aml but was denied. If anyone needs it, PM me your email id and I will email it directly.

Put the file in a ZIP file before u upload

@rjohnst2: No matter what I do, the ApplePIIXATA.kext does not load. I have it in the Extra/Extenmsions on the Chaneleon partition. I have the string in info.plist. I installed it with kext helper. I even installed the IOATA family kext (containing PIIXATA) with kext helper but nothing works. I cannot see the internal SATA HDD or the DVD.

I have tried setting the SATA in BIOS to IDE (it was like this for Leopard) and RAID (which enables AHCI) but it does not work either way. At this point, I have to ask, what did you do to get it working? And if you can attach your kext, that would be awesome.

I have got the sound working using the VoodooHDA you mentioned. And the Netgear USB Ethernet adapter is up. So this is the only sticking point standing between me and a complete upgrade. Thanks for your help.

I'm using Netkas' ApplePIIXATA, installed into /System/Library/Extensions. However, I have two hard drives, one DVD, and a Bluray drive... I can only see SATA 0 and SATA 1 (boot holding F2 to go into setup, and you can see what you have plugged in where.) Netkas has said his fix does not enable SATA 5 and 6, which worked fine under Leopard. So, I'm patiently waiting on a fix from somewhere so I can see my other two SATA ports.

How are you booting now, from an external USB drive?

How are you booting now, from an external USB drive?

Yes, I press F12 to select a boot device and I select my USB HDD. The first partition is Chemeleon and that prompts me for the OS on the second partition as well as Leopard and Vista on the internal HDD. So it seems the internal hard disk just fine.

I tried the Netkas's ApplePIIXATA in Chameleon's Extra/Extensions folder. Then I installed it using Kext Helper b7. Then I learned that IOATAFamily is supposed to have the ApplePIIXATA as a plugin so I tried that both ways. I also learned that SL works only in SATA mode so I tried disabling the IDE mode for SATA in the BIOS. But that didn;t do anything either.

I will watch these forums for some pointers or another install method and try that later. I want to see what happens when I install it to the internal drive, but I am afraid that it will install ok (its a partition copy) but refuse to boot and I will lose my Leopard too.

Chameleon will see all of your drives, but once SL starts loading it won't see them- if that makes sense. Also, I install all kexts to the System/Library/Extensions folder, not the Extra folder, I was having problems with the Extra folder. Lastly, in your BIOS settings it needs to say IDE, our only other choice is RAID and that won't work.
