userx
My laptop is running 15 to 20 degrees celsius hotter in Snow Leopard than in Leopard. Sometimes it just powers right off, while watching a video, or using heavily. I've installed the speedstep kext and the nullCPUPM kext. Any Ideas? Problem Fixed: My laptop was running at a constant 85c. Now it has gone down to 50c This works on the HP Compaq C700 series. Your results may vary. Your speedstep kernel may not be loading, particularly if you're booting in 64 bit.
userx
have you verified that the CPU is throttling? Your speedstep kernel may not be loading, particularly if you're booting in 64 bit. I'm booting into 32bit right now due to the lack of 64bit extensions, like for the X3100 video(which will probably never come), and other stuff. I'm not running a speedstep kernel. I'm running the speedstep kext. I ran the speedstep app to verify, the extension is loaded and running properly.
rest assured son
I'm booting into 32bit right now due to the lack of 64bit extensions Apple says it best: The 32-bit kernel fully supports 64-bit applications, all system libraries that 64-bit applications use are fully 64-bit, and 64-bit applications have a full 64-bit virtual address space of 16 exabytes available to them on Mac OS X. The primary benefit of a 64-bit kernel is to improve the efficiency of accessing over 32GB of RAM. Do you have 32gb of ram? If not, 64 bit is garbage. groveborn
Apple says it best: Do you have 32gb of ram? If not, 64 bit is garbage. You say that a lot. Your best quote is Apple saying the "primary" benefit is accessing over 32gb of ram. This doesn't mean it's bad, this just means it's the very best reason to go there. If your system is stable in 64bit, use it. It's faster, everything is faster (when working). It's not garbage, just fewer are able to use it. Get a clue, please. The major issue I have is that apple did not make a X3100 64bit kext, just one it 32bit. Apple really did their best to cripple the 64bit experience for most of it's users. They also really fudged over the PPC folks. They should have least given them this one last upgrade option, and made 10.7 Intel only. What a shame. Sometimes it just powers right off, while watching a video, or using heavily. I've installed the speedstep kext and the nullCPUPM kext. Any Ideas? I think you should try VoodooPower version 1.2.3 instead of Speedstep. I left Speedstep a long time ago for Voodoopower. The advantage is I always use vanilla kernels and my CPU throttles without any problems, even in Snow Leopard 32 bit. I have an Intel Core 2 duo T7200 and the temperature at rest in Snow Leopard is around 46-47 degrees Celsius.

I've tried almost everything, speedstep, voodoo power, voodoo lite. Right now speedstep seems to toggle down my CPU better than the other two. But I'm still running hot, 85c. average. Would like to get it under 60c or less, like I had in Leopard.

BuXb
hm, I ran pfix (permissions fix) 1.2 by Conti (SojuGarden.com) and now the fan is spinning much more again. Already deleted extension.mkext, reapplied the kext with kexthelper, checked Activity Monitor etc. pp., re-loaded BIOS defaults, booted XP (that helped before), no chance ..
