-TiLT-
Looking at my vendors-homepage, I saw him listing the older MacBookPros (1,8Ghz / 2,0Ghz) as discontinued and reduced price (1799€ or 2269€) (quite attractive, old prices were 2069€ or 2569€) Now looking at the Apple homepage, there are new models and prices as well. The 1,8 Ghz variant is not listed anymore and the prices dropped overall for a small amount. Now I am wondering if these new models might have switched to Merom, or if they are still the older core-duos. If they were Meroms, that would be the point for me of getting one now, but I cannot find information about the placed processor. Someone has more information? Cheers -TiLT-
sigxcpu
Prices dropped? They've just shifted the configurations, removing 1.83 version.
-TiLT-
Somehow prices dropped a bit in Germany. About 50€
Ouch
These are not merom - don't expect that until later this year at the earliest.
-TiLT-
Yes that is ridicoulous I know. I shouldn´t have asked for that. But the price drop and the new models were like christmas for me. I just bougt myself a 1,83ghz 512/128 MacBookPro, I couldn´t stand it anymore without a notebook, and I think the 1745€ are worth it. I am not a real gamer, so I can live with the 128 MB of the x1600. I have a fast PC for gaming and from what I know the merom will be pin-compatible to the oder core-duos. So there is potential for upgrading the MBP. Well nevermind and please close this thread. Cheers -TiLT-
Ouch
Pin compatible yes but the cpu is soldered to the logic board on macbooks - it doesn't have a zif socket like the imac has.
-TiLT-
Okay you got me But I am still happy as everything here works fine. (Except the whining) Greets
Milanista
Hi all, I'm new here. I'm planning on getting the 2.16ghz Macbook Pro this summer, and am worried about this whining problem, but now that I see this thread, I'm hoping these new models have fixed most of the common problems. Does anyone know if these models mentioned fix the known noises and problems?
-TiLT-
No, they aren´t. I asked in the Apple-shop, and they told me that technically, there were no changes in the hardware. But they said as well, that they are awaiting a fix for the whining.
Pippin
now you can choose glossy screen or standard one.
Ouch
Hi all, I'm new here. I'm planning on getting the 2.16ghz Macbook Pro this summer, and am worried about this whining problem, but now that I see this thread, I'm hoping these new models have fixed most of the common problems. Does anyone know if these models mentioned fix the known noises and problems? They aren't new models - they are just the latest revision, as far as we know the latest revision seems to improve the heat issues (although they are still hot - just not as bad as first revision models). Whining still seems to be a problem, but there shouldn't be any inverter buzzing with these ones.
-TiLT-
One question about the inverter buzz. Is this the loud noise, that you can reduce via QuietMBP? Because when I use QMBP there is still some whining. The frequency of that second noise seems to be a bit higher.
Ouch
Inverter buzz is specific to the early macbook pro's - the inverter is responsible for dimming the backlight on the lcd - thus when the backlight is set to anything other than 0% or 100% you get a buzzing noise from below the display. QuietMBP is a tool that supposedly keeps the processor from idling to stop it whining - it works for some people but not all. It's not related to the inverter. Cyman
Do you guys expect that until late August there will be new MBPs equipped with Merom or is do you think this is too optimistic? I think the Merom chips should be sold by then if I'm well informed, so the question is, whether Apple (now as a premium retailer for Intel chips) will be one of the first to offer the new processor with their product line (keeping the whole product line-up release history since the switching announcement in mind, I guess this is likely since Apple was actually one of the first, if not THE first to promote the new Intel Core Duo chips). The reason I ask is, because I am seriously thinking about purchasing a 1.83GHz MBP now, before it disappears. On the other hand I would like to see a display with 1920x1200 resolution and a better video card, because I am not very convinced of the X1600 Pro (does it even have a 256bit bus interface?) Well, concerning the resolution I could live with less too, as long as I can connect the MBP to my external LCD screen (though I am too curious if swapping the display with another model capable of UWXGA would work - which is rather unlikely for several reasons, first of all money for another screen which probably won't fit/work at all). So, resuming it, I would like to know how the chances are to see a better MBP with Merom, maybe a better video card and eventually a higher screen resolution until end of August. What do you think? Ouch
I'd say theres a reasonable chance of merom this year - august may be a little optomistic but it's possible. Remember Apple will probably be concentrating on getting the powermac replacement out the door. If merom was released this year there is a slim chance of an updated GPU but this would require quite a lot of additional development work so don't count on it. As for higher res display i would guess probably not, Apple could have used a higher res display on the first macbook pro's but choose not to probably because on a 15" display a UWXGA resolution would be disproportionately high and probably be harder to use. If you need a higher resolution display they want you to go for the 17" macbook pro.
Cyman
As Intel releases its new Core 2 Duo on July, 23 I am pretty optimistic now that chances are not even bad that we'll see an updated MBP until end of August. Well, in first place this means that Apple will release its Mac Pro (Powermac successor) series equipped with the new processors, but they could also present an updated Mac mini with Merom and the latest i965G chipset as well as updated MacBooks and MBPs. We'll see - hard to wait until then.
-TiLT-
Hopefully this waiting time will remunerate us with a non-whining, thermal-paste rationally used and perfectly working, two-button 15" powermachine. "I want to believe"
supermus
The plural of "Macbook Pro" is "Macbooks Pro", not "Macbook Pros". "Pro" is an adjective, and thus should not be changed to form a plural. The same rule holds true for "Attorneys General" and "Surgeons General". In this case, "Macbooks Pro" also sounds better to me, because "Macbook Pros" sounds suspiciously similar to "Macbook Prose". Ouch
"Macbook Pro" could however be considered a proper noun where "pro" is not the adjective describing the noun "macbook".
supermus
A valid point, but "Surgeon General" is also a proper noun, a title just like "Macbook Pro", and it forms the plural "Surgeons General". The same standard should be applied to "Macbook Pro".

Cyman
Hehe, seems I was right with MacBook Pros, though I think it's time to get back on topic - what do you guys think?
-TiLT-
I just returned my MBP. The whine was outstanding and the heat on the bottom made my legs as cooked, my girlfriend had something to nibble for the whole evening From now on I am waiting again for the merom series. But the short vista on the MBP underlined my need to own one! Hopefully next time without headache.
Cyman
I begin to become convinced that it's in fact better to wait for a Merom MBP. First of all, because of the known issues, second, because I'll get a better equipped/performing machine for (almost) the same price. Well, the MBPs which have reached end-of-life status are a good deal somehow but still they won't be as good as the same notebook with Merom.
