Edirol FA-66 and OSX86 : software+plugin monitoring ?

Hello,

I've just seen in the edirol FAQ that the software monitoring was only possible into windows XP

with ASIO drivers.... (not only due to edirol hardware but to ASIO drivers too)

That what i did into cubase SX3 with asio when recording my guitar with vst reverb plugin

(no latency problem with my dsp24 / adda2000 : 5 ms latency under XP)

But into OSX, is the software monitoring possible with coreaudio into logic express 7.2 (not pro) ?

If i will use the edirol (FA-66 or FA-101) witch have hard/soft monitoring selector, will i be able

to monitor directly into logic express and to hear my source going through a reverb plugin ????

(with monitor button like cubase sx3 per mixer track : icon = a little orange speaker)

The edirol firerwire serie FA (66 / 101) don't use specific drivers under OSX, but the firewire audio

driver from coreaudio... and coremidi. it's seems that there was firewire MIDI problems before 10.3.7 (PPC)

Has someone tested coreaudio/coremidi with edirol FA-66 or FA-101 under osx86 from 10.4.4 to 10.4.6 ???

(one FA-101 test under 10.4.3 seems OK on the wiki...but not 10.4.4 and later ?)

Thanks

I test my FA66 firewire on my laptop with 10.4.6 system installed. at first, it wasn't recognized :-(

I changed the AppleFWAudio.kext and IOAudioFamily.kext from 10.4.5 to make it work, and now, core audio recognize it.

it works with reason and cubase (LE) without any problems :-)

Hello stevebrush,

Thank you for your experience... I have the 10.4.4 installed, and not even buy my edirol FA-66...

Is your Core-midi working too ? did you try to record vst instrument with a midi keyboard ?

How is your latency delay in this case ? is it manualy playable ?

is it playable too by recording a guitare/mic into software monitoring (eg cubase) ? (not by fa-66 hardware monitoring = 0 latency) ?

Is there no cracks or pops when playing/recording multi channel recording ?

Last question : are you using cubase osx PPC into your osx86 laptop ? is it ok ?

Could you please explain shortly your hardware laptop spec, to compare with mine...

so i can see if a FA-66 could work well on my hardware.

Spécific desktop PC :

- MB asus P4B266 + P4 northwood 2.4@2.9 Ghz SSE2 PAE only.

- 512 Mo SDRAM 2100 high perf

- Radeon 9600 XT 256 MO ram (OpenGL, QE and CI supported)

- Firewire 400 interface pci card with Texas Instrument chipset. OHCI compiliant.

At last, what do you think about the FA-66 compared to the same M-audio firewire products range ?

Thank you !

I have not seen anybody with firewire or pci m-audio get stuff to work.

But the edirol seems to work. this is what im planning on getting as well. the 101 and possibly the 66 as well for a 2nd pc.

since the drivers are "part of" core audio/midi it should fare better then an m-audio unit I think.

asio direct monitoring, I think has been a strictly asio/steiney feature...until recent PT and cakewalk and a few others..

Logic Pro should easily do it. Express if its not too much of a cut down app, it should direct monitor as well....i may be a feature under setup.

Hello Dr.funk,

you say : "I have not seen anybody with firewire or pci m-audio get stuff to work."

Do you mean under osx86 with new M-audio x86 drivers ? or generaly speaking, do you think

the M-audio firewire is not a good product ?

I'm interessed with the edirol FA-66 too, but i'de like to test one on my machine

to be sur it will work. I have to test my pci/firewire controler card, it's a Texas Instrument

chipset and the edirol web says about Fa-66, on a x86 machine, a texas Instrument firewire

controler is recommanded...

But i have to sell before my STaudio DSP24+ADDA2000 (C-port) !

Strictly speaking of OSX here. I know that it works well in xp and x64.

Im going for the 101 perhaps. Infact Im selling off pc stuff to build 2 new (hopefully) fully capable osx/xp/x64 machines.

Once this is done..I should be able to post with as much detail as posssible what works and what doesnt...as far as osx x86 for a DAW.

Later,

I have the same problem here, where did you find the old kext files? I also tried to manually load the AppleFWAudio.kext and then I got this:

sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleFWAudio.kext
22AppleFWAudioIsocEngine is not compatible with its superclass, 13IOAudioEngine superclass changed?
kextload: a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleFWAudio.kext
load failed for extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleFWAudio.kext
(run kextload with -t for diagnostic output)

sorry maby im a little confused here, but i have tiger installed on an ibook and on my macbook and i have had no issues whatsoever with my edirol fa-101. software monitoring works perfectly in logic express, just set the input to the channel, make sure the output is to the correct channels, and arm the track for recording and you have software monitoring. can get teh latency down really low too, like under 10ms for recording 6 audio tracks with no cracks or pops or anything, the harddrive is too slow to record longer than 14 mins at a time tho. :dance_24:
