Anyone watch Bush's speech on Monday night? What do you think the proper approach is to US immigration?

(Discussion open to non-US residents - all about new perpectives here :) )

Well my opinion here is more about the illegal Latin American immigrants than the policy itself. I realize and understand that they are criminals by crossing the border illegally, but I feel if they are willing to work towards citizenship, and pay taxes, etc., like the rest of us, I see no reason why we can't look past that and accept them into our society. Now, on the flipside, if they came here looking to be freebooters, by all means I think they should be kicked back to their home countries.

I'm perfectly fine with immigrants that come in legally. It's the illegal ones that bug me. They get all of these special benefits when the come in illegaly. They get translators, they don't have to pay taxes, and they get free stuff. That just makes coming in legally look stupid. Why bother going through years of papers and tests to come in legally if you can get all of these benefits illegally. Then all of the illegals have protests saying that were unfair to them. While their protesting, we should get the troops in there to round them up and ship them back to where they came from. I don't think if I went to another country illegally that I would get all of the benefits that the illegals get here. For example, If I went illegally to Mexico, I doubt I would get free housing, food, and translators. And if I protested, forget about it! They would haul me off to jail. I really think that America need to get it's act together and get rid of these illegals, or at least give them a chance to become legal.

Yup, I agree as well.

I really don't have any problem with border patrols or fencing being built or anything like that. After all, good fences do make good neighbors. :)

I also think it's a good idea to make English the national language. We should assist other languages but since it's the one most of us speak, it should take precedence. (/controversy)

This is relevant to immigration. America is propped up by poor countries all over the world. In these poor countries, wages are very small for jobs to manufacture products for America. Therefore, America is the cause of suffering all over the world. I don't see why a person born in America should have any privilege over somebody born in China (for instance), who works much harder. I view westernised life as a temporary bubble fueled by oil from third world countries. This bubble is not only unfair, it is unsustainable. As the oil runs out, wars will escalate because the powerful countries will fight harder for the remaining reserves. Eventually, armies will fight their own citizens for the last few drops. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are evidence that America is trying to gain more influence in regions where oil reserves are large. All this is the basis of my opinion that anyone from anywhere in the world has the right to live in America.

concerning language:

it doesn't matter which country one wants to immigrate to, but learning the language of this country is an absolute necessity. The question "learrn it or not?" shouldn't even come to mind.

if you don't even speak the language how can you ever properly integrate or even feel at home eventually? of course one shouldn't forget one's roots on the other hand.

just my 2 cents

The underlying fact is that many employers that own farms go to Mexico and try to bring workers over to do manual labor. What self respecting red-blooded American would work under minimum wage 13hrs a day and no benefits? Another fact is that OFW (overseas foreign workers) fuel the United States.

... Illegal aliens get benefits... it's called social services. rates of cancer in farm workers are enormous. everyone and their grandmother who's worked in the fields has a relative with cancer that is being treated, free of charge at hospital. who exactly pays for that?

You and me. Not farm-owners or big business.

Have you actually gotten social services? Did they ask you for your Social Security Card? What happens when you say you don't have one? What process did you have to go though when you tried to acquire for one? Who pays for it? For the most part, no one does. They live with it until they get amnesty.

...

You think it requires a social security card to get medical care at a hospital?

You think it even requires an ID?

...

I didnt answer your question, my bad.

Yes, I have gone to the hospital. I didnt have insurance at the time. They treated me. Fortunately for everyone involved, it only cost a few hundred dollars for 3 stiches.

I dont recall if they asked for my ID... they definitely didnt ask for my proof of legal citizenship. but then, I'm pretty aryan.

I love how folks bash "illegal" immigrants... which is politically incorrect - "undocumented"

"Oh, they're getting free social services..." HELLO?! They're the reason your food costs what it does, your pool, construction, consisting of nearly 5% of the workforce, they live typically at the lowest of standards. According to an INS report, on average, an illegal immigrant make $40-50 day. The same work, on average, an American would take in nearly 150 dollars a day. Multiply that difference by let's say 4 million and then by 365 days. Not to mention, companies having lower operational costs, boost income, boost stock, boost income for stockholders, boosted income boosts standard of living... the cycle goes on and on. Any "cost" is outweighed with benefits. I say shove it...

"I don't mind legal ones...." I'd love to see anybody get through the immigration system as an unemployed Mexican citizen. The problem isn't in border security, it's in the immigration process itself. I'll pose this question to everyone; If you have kids, wouldn't you do anything to make sure they're fed? Do you think with Mexico's economy, you're willing to wait years before being processed though your kids might starve to death beforehand? HELL NO! If these people were coming over the border to leech, not work, I'd agree. Unfortunately, this isn't the case, narrow minded people need to open their eyes.

I'm not advcating citizenship the undocumented/ousting of them, merely the acquisition of education before formulating an opinion. Depending on corporate based media is extremely ignorant; media in general has their own political platform, there is a way they want you to think... it'd be better if everyone used primary sources rather than secondary ones.

Note- I don't support the "Mexican" movement, but I do oppress the oppressors...

jgrimes: I'm not saying that illegal immigrants are being treated fairly. That said, they DO use social services. The real winners are the companies that hire illegal aliens, or undocumented workers or whatever. They get the benefit of paying them next to nothing, while foisting the costs of their social services on everyone else.

I'm not one of those people who say "Illegal aliens go home!", I'm one of those people who say that illegal aliens are a crutch; just as slaves were. A crutch for rich people to get richer on the backs of everyone else.

The only reason why no one's invented a machine to pick strawberries efficiently is because there's no need... plenty of "undocumented workers" perfectly willing to do it for $2/hr

(this is an exaggeration, they dont make that little... )

We call ourselves americans because saying we're United States of Americans is too cumbersome.

I call myself a Seattleite and a Washingtonian too.

We called people from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics Soviets or Russians. We call people from England the English, we call people from Canada Canadians, from Mexico Mexicans, from Spain Spaniards, from Brazil Brazillians, from Portugal the Portuguese, from France the French... from Japan the Japanese, from China the Chinese, from South Africa, South Africans or Afrikaners.

As far as I know, Mexico isnt the United Mexican Republic of America.

People from the United States are Americans

People from the United States, Canada and Mexico are North Americans

People who live West of Jerusalem and East of The Tip of Alaska are Westerners

People who live south of the Mason Dixon line are called Southerners. Are Mexicans Southerners too? Not in the US they arent.

In public highschool, not much... but at least we have them.
