Installing SUSE 10.1 with multimedia support

Smart Package Manager

 

We are going to install Smart to use instead of Yast to install packages because Yast is way too slow. Don't worry, you will still have a graphical interface for smart if you prefer it to the terminal.

First we need to take care of 2 dependencies, open the terminal and:

 

x86 (each code box is one line):

su

rpm -ihv ftp://ftp.belnet.be/mirrors/ftp.opensuse.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source/suse/i586/rpm-python-*.rpm

rpm -ihv ftp://ftp.belnet.be/mirrors/ftp.opensuse.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source/suse/i586/python-elementtree*.rpm

Then install Smart: 

rpm -ihv http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/packages/System/smart/smart-0.42-7.guru.suse101.i686.rpm

 

x86_64 (each code box is one line):

su

rpm -ihv ftp://ftp.belnet.be/mirrors/ftp.opensuse.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source/suse/x86_64/rpm-python-*.rpm

rpm -ihv ftp://ftp.belnet.be/mirrors/ftp.opensuse.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source/suse/x86_64/python-elementtree*.rpm

Then install Smart: 

rpm -ihv http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/packages/System/smart/smart-0.42-7.guru.suse101.x86_64.rpm

 

All processor types:

Now we do a: 

sudo smart update

This will install apt and a sources.list and get the keys.(I say yes to all.)

lastly do:

sudo smart install smart-gui smart-ksmarttray

sudo smart upgrade

reboot.

TIP: For codecs and flash, java, etc. type the following line in the terminal ( entir box is one line):

sudo smart install vlc gstreamer010 libxine1* xvid java-1_5_0-sun-plugin totem-plugin RealPlayer banshee-plugins* flash-player

TIP: To get rid of the annoying updater icon in the systray and replace with a smart update notifier, disable the existing updater icon by right-clicking on it, choose configure, and uncheck the 'run at start' box. Then enter in the terminal:

gnome-session-properties

Click the 'Startup Programs' tab, then the add button and type 'ksmarttray' and close. Next time you reboot, all will be good.

 

OSx86 Support

 

First we will add OSx86 to the boot loader.

 

You will get a 'HFS partition error' when you try to boot OSx86 if you use yast to auto config grub, so we will manually change the 'menu.lst': 

sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst

Add a 4 line entry to the end like this: 

title	   OSx86
root		(hd0,1)
makeactive
chainloader	+1

(hint: 'hd0,1' was my /sda2, so if it is on the first partition it will be hd0,0)

 

Next we will set up SUSE so that it mounts OSx86 (Windows too if it doesn't already) each time at boot.

 

Open up the terminal (Applications>System>Terminal) and type the followinnew fileg: 

sudo mkdir /media/OSx86
sudo mkdir /media/Windows
sudo nano /etc/fstab

 

you will see this in the terminal: screenshot18sh.th.png

notice the area I highlighted in black, i added the lines 

/dev/sda1			/media/Windows	   ntfs	   nls=utf8,umask=0222 0 0
/dev/sda4			/media/OSx86		 hfsplus	defaults 0 0

control X, yes, and enter (to save)

 

NOTE: use the partitioner in the 'System' part of YaST if you want to see the partitions.

XGL/Compiz (gnome)

gnome_main_menu_0.6.1_0.2.i586.rpm

Thanx, vg guide indeed. Have you given XGL a try? If you post a guide on that, I'm sure it would be appreciated as well :)

I added XGL to the guide. I am really liking it. I mentioned some tricks at the end of the guide. (my tv card does act funny with xgl however)

 

Nvidia people also only have to get 3d hardware acceleration, then yast 'xgl' and 'compiz' reboot and XGL is in the menu. I love suse.

This is what I hate about linux in general. I installed apt and when I go to the suse config I can't find what your guide says.

 

I tried the ati drivers and then after installing the kernel-module I got a second error you need gcc installed

yes, the error you got was because you used apt, use YaST to install the kernel-source. the repositories will be corrected soon, 10.1 (proper) is only a few days old and the apt part is not 'official'. (I fixed the guide, that was my fault. thanks.)

For the ATI drivers you should always install the kernel-sources, gcc and make from the CDs if you have made a Suse standart installation. If you have installed everything from the CDs it's already installed.

For you all who have already updated to 10.1, are tuxracer and tuxpaint still there?

 

I was just going to update my 10.0 to 10.1, when I noticed these two were included in packages to be deleted.

 

Tuxpaint is my 3 year old's favorite. My 6 year old likes tuxracer. I really don't care to explain to them why I erased their favorite distractions.

I installed kde and gnome so I have like 70 games, but I don't see tux racer, just something in yast called 'ppracer' but tux paint is in yast.

Well, got thru the installation of ati drivers, compiz and xgl and all I can say is WOW! This thing is awesome!! Still can't get apt to work but will keep trying. Been playing with it for a day now and no crashes, the system is very responsive and the animations are excellent. The expose like feature is a must and the animation for Alt + Tab is excellent too. I'm looking forward for their Enterprise Desktop Edition.

 

Thanks for the how to. Does anybody knows if there is a way to get the start panel to look like the enterprise edition?

I updated this guide today if anyone is interested.

 

I took out the needless steps of adding sources to yast (which took forever)

Did the Apt instructions correctly so that the GPG keys install

Added SMART to it

Updated the ATI driver to the most current and added the step for 64 bit users.

Welcome to the forums allelopath, the problem was because the file and name changed, I updated it. (a 1 is now a 3.)

 

I also added a tip to replace the zen-updater with the smart updater in the sys tray.

 

Also the ATI part (on my blog) has been updated to use the newest ATI drivers released last friday.

Ok, i made it up to the new tip.

 

In Utilties -> Desktop -> Control Center -> System, i have nothing called "Sessions".

I have:

Data & Time, Network Proxies, Preferred Applications, Screensaver, Sound, User Management

 

You can also just type in the terminal: 

gnome-session-properties
