nomis66
Hi Kizwan, Yes, was able to install retail using your disk to boot from but OS does not recognize graphics card properly (no Open GL and only one screen resolution - BIG). Also no Ethernet so not able to run Software Update. Other than that it's fine lol. simon
kizwan
Congratulation! At least now you have successfully installed Mac OS X using retail DVD. It is normal for a couple of device not working. I believe you have the driver for your graphic card, right? Install the driver. Can you give me the installer of the driver for your graphic card so that I can put the kext in Boot-132 CD. Well...we don't want to put any patched kext in /S/L/E because that is the whole idea of "Retail Setup". But Natit.kext will not give you any problem even if it is installed in /S/L/E. So it is ok to install it. As for your ethernet card, did you select a driver for your ethernet during iDeneb installation? I have included a kext for your ethernet card in Boot-132 CD. I don't know why it didn't work. Can you give me system.log file? It is located at "/var/log/system.log". I want to see if the kext itself failed to load from Boot-132 CD. EDIT: I think I know how to get your ethernet card working. Please wait while I update Boot-132 CD for you. kizwan
kizwan
I have prepared two Boot-132 CD. 1) Boot-132 CD with LAN support (Marvell Yukon 88E8056) 2) Boot-132 CD with LAN & GFX (graphic card ATI Radeon HD 4870) support I will upload both ISO (it may take a while because bandwidth problem). EDIT: Both ISO:- 1) http://www.mediafire.com/?ejennmxqtuc 2) http://www.mediafire.com/?bx3gtv9tjxm <-- removed because not working.
nomis66
Hey Kizwan, thanks ever so much for going to all this trouble for me. I think we're making progress lol. 1. I used the Boot-132 with LAN and GFX - Booted and installed Retail perfectly. 2. On opening Leopard everything worked (including Ethernet) except graphics (stuck on one screen res and no Open GL) 3. Ran Software Update and rebooted. 4. Graphics now recognized but lost Ethernet. 5. Ran 10.5.7_RepairPack.v1.4.by.cVad.dmg (not sure if I should have done this - think it installed Family Kext) 6. Now everything seems to be working although I have to set screen resolution to 1344 x 1008 for it to display as 1600 x 1200 Am i there yet lol? si
kizwan
.................... 1. I used the Boot-132 with LAN and GFX - Booted and installed Retail perfectly. - Good to hear this. 2. On opening Leopard everything worked (including Ethernet) except graphics (stuck on one screen res and no Open GL) - Obviously Natit.kext (for your graphic card) cannot load from Boot-132, need to be put it in /S/L/E. Use Boot-132 with LAN only to install & boot Mac OS X. After that install Natit.pkg to enable your ATI Radeon HD 4870. You have ATI Radeon HD 4870, right? 3. Ran Software Update and rebooted. - I think for now don't run Software Update yet. 4. Graphics now recognized but lost Ethernet. - Does QE & CI working at this point? - I believe you lost ethernet because you have updated (Software Update) to new version. This caused kext that handle your ethernet card in Boot-132 failed to load (because it is older version). I will try to create "legacy kext" for your ethernet card. "Legacy kext" is useful to fix this kind of problem. 5. Ran 10.5.7_RepairPack.v1.4.by.cVad.dmg (not sure if I should have done this - think it installed Family Kext) - I don't like when you do this. LOL. This defeat the purpose of "retail setup". By doing this your Mac OS X will broken again when you apply new Software Update. 6. Now everything seems to be working although I have to set screen resolution to 1344 x 1008 for it to display as 1600 x 1200 - Does QE & CI working at this point? .............. While I create & test legacy kext for ethernet, I want you to re-install (LOL) Mac OS X using Boot-132 with LAN only. Remember don't run Software Update this time. After installation is successful, install Natit.pkg. I want to know either your graphic card is working or not (resolution, QE & CI). During this test remember to use Boot-132 CD (with LAN support) to install & boot Mac OS X. Don't install other boot loader for now. If you thing this is too much for you, let me know, I totally understand. LOL This is not trouble me in any way because I do this in my free time & I have a lot of free time...for now. LOL kizwan
nomis66
Hi Kizwan, I have reinstalled Leopard Retail using Boot-132(LAN) disk and run Natit.pkg Here is what System Profiler says about QE, CI and resolution:
nomis66
Kizwan, The HD 4870 was added by Apple as an upgrade option on the latest Max Pros (which is why I got it) Both with iDeneb and Retail the HD 4870 doesn't have full functionality until I upgrade to 10.5.7. (although it still seems to work better under iDeneb) Is it possible that when Apple added the card as a possible upgrade that they also added something to 10.5.7 to make it work? Just a thought. si PS. Please note, having installed Leopard Retail using Boot-132(LAN) disk and run Natit.pkg (hav enot run Software Update) Ethernet is working but Graphics not functioning properly. kizwan
At this point, can you change to any resolution? I think you're right. Natit.pkg was introduce in netkas.org for 10.5.7. The purpose of this test is to see what happen if it is installed in pre-10.5.7. Right now I want you to run Software Update & update your Mac OS X to 10.5.7. Please report back to me (resolution, QE & CI). I will provide 10.5.7 kext for your ethernet card later. For this test, please use Boot-132 CD with LAN (only) to boot Mac OS X. Thank you. kizwan

kizwan
Boot-132 with LAN support (legacy kext) for Mac OS X 10.5.X:- http://www.mediafire.com/file/t5dzgnggwem/...iso.part01.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/0j3dbtp2iev/...iso.part02.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/x3opyzemahd/...iso.part03.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/ejzszdwx3jn/...iso.part04.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/u4q2yl9nwgd/...iso.part05.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/wcvsexngzaf/...iso.part06.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/jmoy1wxowdf/...iso.part07.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/m2nvxdmmeiy/...iso.part08.sitx Download all & decompress it using StuffIt or any other compatible application. Please boot your Mac OS X with this Boot-132 CD & report back to me. This time it use legacy kext to enable Marvell Yukon 88E8056 (ethernet card) & it should work with any Mac OS X 10.5.X. Additional test:- If you have time, please re-install Mac OS X using this new Boot-132 CD. I just want to confirm that Marvell Yukon 88E8056 is working with it (before & after Sofware Update). Summary of what I want you to report back to me:- 1) Does it enable Marvell Yukon 88E8056 on your Mac OS X when you boot with "Boot132-P5Q Deluxe LAN 10.5.7" CD? 2) Does it enable Marvell Yukon 88E8056 on your newly installed retail Mac OS X (without Software Update) with "Boot132-P5Q Deluxe LAN 10.5.7" CD? Future planning:- If it is working, we will change from Boot-132 CD to Boot-132 USB. You can restore Boot-132 USB image to a flash drive or to a partition in your harddisk (the same harddisk where you installed Mac OS X). With Boot-132 USB you can either:- 1) Boot your Mac OS X with Boot-132 USB flash drive & it load much faster than Boot-132 CD. or 2) If Boot-132 USB image restored to a partition of a harddisk, you can boot Mac OS X directly from the harddisk without using either Boot-132 USB or CD. kizwan
kizwan
New Boot-132 CD for Mac OS X 10.5.7. This Boot-132 CD is NOT meant to replace earlier Boot-132 CD. I just add experimental support for your graphic card. It will only working with Mac OS X 10.5.7 (because of the ATI only starting to work when you upgrade to 10.5.7). Add support for your ATI Radeon HD 4870:- http://www.mediafire.com/file/1ondn5uys1q/...iso.part01.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/vhcaxekwnyz/...iso.part02.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/pcj0zdywmjl/...iso.part03.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/ddcdwcgjt0c/...iso.part04.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/0a0czmjg2r9/...iso.part05.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/nfgqtny2n1g/...iso.part06.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/cllihng1hjx/...iso.part07.sitx http://www.mediafire.com/file/n5nieiewnj5/...iso.part08.sitx Please try with new installation without Natit.pkg. I believe it should work with 10.5.7. kizwan
nomis66
Hey Kizwan, Here is my report. For convenience I'll refer to the "Boot132-P5Q_Deluxe_LAN_10.5.7" disk as "D1" and the "Boot132-P5Q_Deluxe_LAN_GFX_10.5.7" disk as "D2". 1) Used D1 to boot existing OS (Retail Leopard installed using your previous 132_LAN disk, updated and patched for ethernet and graphics). Result: Everything working. 2) Installed Retail using D1 and booted using D1. (No update, no patches). Result: Everything working except graphics. 3) Installed Retail using D1 and booted using D2. (No update, no patches). Result: Everything working except graphics. 4) Installed Retail using D1. Updated using Software Update. booted using D1 (No Patches). Result: Would not boot. 5) Installed Retail using D1. Updated using Software Update. booted using D2 (No Patches). Result: Everything working including Shutdown. I think we're there. si

I think we're there. si It is strange that at no. 4 you unable to boot Mac OS X but at no. 5 you can. Actually there is no different between D1 & D2 except in D2 I just include Natit.kext in it. It is no big deal however. I will continue making Boot-132 USB base on D1 & D2. It will available hopefully end of this week. Meanwhile try to learn how to restore Boot-132 USB to your harddisk so that you can boot directly from your harddisk without needing Boot-132 CD or USB. You just need to allocate 200MB partition on the first of your harddisk. The restore operation can be done using Disk Utility. I believe you already know how to do it. Just remember to mount the Boot-132 USB image first then drag the mounted volume to "Source". kizwan

nomis66
I bought a few bits every month (online) so overall it really didn't cost that much to put together (a lot less than a comparable Intel Mac). Also I tried to match the components with the ones used on the latest Mac Pro as much as possible. I've been running Logic Studio on it and it 's blazing. It should be possible in the future to overclock the chip to 3GHz (although I've no idea how to do that and it's not really a priority just now) but I have built the machine with that in mind. si
nomis66
Hi Kizwan, Do you think it's safe to start using this Retail OS as my main OS now? Up till now I've still been using the HD with iDeneb on it. Obviously I will need to boot the Retail OS from CD, but I've been reading up on Disk Utility and have found that (if you're able to help me with a boot partition in the future) I can add a partition to the HD without deleting any existing data. Also, if I'm able to get Leopard to boot from a partition is it likely that this will also work for the upcoming Snow Leopard OS? Cheers, si P.S. Would it be safe to use Migration Assistant to copy my apps etc. from My iDeneb to my Retail disk?
