Ok, so I've just recently gotten into Battlestar Galactica (the new version). I watched the old one as a kid, but the new series is great. As good... if not better than... dare I say it?... Star Trek TNG.

I like BSG better because it has a story line and is 100% more intense than TNG (excluding a few episodes like "The Best of Both Worlds").

What do you guys think? Am I a heretical Trekkie for saying these things?

With all due respect, who gives a flying frag about a show that ended over 10 years ago? If you want a fair comparison, at least bring on some more ballsy (imaginative) space soaps such as Farscape and Firefly.

Ok, I'm not so sure about Firefly. It has people speaking tongue twisting Chinese, but not a single Chinese to be found anywhere. Maybe in the future the Chinese took over the galaxy? I dunno... Something I can never get over.

Farscape I like cos of the expanded "muppets in space" concept. I have a soft spot for muppets.

Oh geez, this is ironic...

Honest-to-God truth: I just finished watching the miniseries and both seasons of BSG a month ago and I am now working my way through the first and second seasons of TNG (call me a sci-fi geek).

Overall, I think BSG is the better show. It concentrates more on the people than the fictional technology and science, which is the trap that several otherwise great sci-fi shows have fallen into. BSG is probably the most human; it's like taking "The Matrix," Top Gun," "The Hunt For Red October," and any random soap opera and rolling it into one show. It's incredibly suspenseful.

One thing I don't like about BSG are the sexual overtones that permeate several of the characters (Baltar, Six, Apollo, Starbuck, Dee, etc.) Sure, it does add some spice to an interesting scenario, but really needed?

TNG's strength as far as I see lies in complete randomness: we don't know where the crew are and we don't know what may happen to them.

Honestly, I don't really know how to compare the two. They both take a thorough mature look at what may happen to a group of people in a given situation; it's just a question of which style fits you best.

What, no Stargate Atlantis? Probably one of my favourite shows of late....can't wait for Season 3!

I have been meaning to get into BSG for a while, though. From the little I've seen and heard, it seems quite incredible. Hopefully I can find some time to download the past seasons. ^_^

I agree Aurora - BSG has too much romance for me, and the sexual overtones (especially with Baltar) get old after awhile.

And I'm pretty sure that "frac" is the best non-swearing swear word I've ever heard. :weight_lift:

I like the new BS.. I loved the old one.

I was more of a TOS and DS9 person for star trek, but did enjoy TNG.

I loved SG1 until Anderson went off the show... and Atlantis.. is shakey.

If I have to vote between BS and TNG though... I'd take TNG.

Star Trek: The Next Generation was one of the greatest Sci Fi series ever due to he breaking new grounds in special effects, story, character development, etc. So with all due respect, don't brush it off.

I loved TNG and I love Voyager to. I have said this and I feel like I am speaking blasphemy, but Voyager was some what better than TNG, but TNG was great. I hated DS9.

The new Battlestar is EXCELLENT. They take you buy the throat, show you emotion that many shows do not, and the story telling is phenominal. Can you compare Battlestar to Star Trek TNG? Yes and no. Story wise, they are very different. Battlestar has a continuing story that branches off here and there, but comes back to it eventually. TNG was great due to the new stories each week but some stories, more specifically character development stories, were on going. So they are similiar in that repect. Where both really are alike is the diverse amount of characters that are so unique. TNG did this with Data, Geordi (sp?), Worf, Q, etc. Battlestar has the new cylons, the "fake"/ "imaginary" (we really don't know what she is) cylon in Baltar's (sp?) head, the new Starbuck, the blonde cylon (damn to long without Battlestar, forgetting names) that remembers Baltar, etc. Both series kicks ass in the respect. The differences is how the story is told. Battlestar take you by the throat as I said and TNG did a more epic approach. Both are great and should be watched by any Sci Fi fan.

I definitely like BSG more, although TNG did have a lot of good shows, once it made out of the first few atrocious seasons. :happymac:

I wish they'd can SG1 and Atlantis and come up with something new, though. Although I at least like the whole SG1 cast, as well as a couple of the people on Atlantis at the moment.
