Hi Mac insanes,

This one's for the American fellows - or anyone else in the know. I was wondering if there's a possibility to buy a prepaid SIM card for 3G internet access in the US.

Just for info, in most European countries you can buy just a SIM card with credits on it (usually in GB) and pop it into your 3G USB dongle on your laptop. You can top it up with a credit card if needed. A USB dongle costs somewhere from 15 to 60 quid over here.

AFAIR in the US, you could never just buy a pay-as-you-go SIM card without it being coupled to a mobile phone or some other piece of hardware, last time I checked. Has this practise finally ended? The US sites AT&T, Virgin etc are not really clear about this. Is it assumed that you can't just buy the SIM? I found an article about 'the brand new' plan by Virgin for 250MB for $20 but it seems like you'd have to buy their dongle for $150 !! ;) The article is not clear about this though.

The roaming fees I would have to pay in the US with my SIM from Europe are just astronomical...

Any clue much appreciated.

Cheers for the reply.

That sounds interesting if they give you the phone for free. But then again they might as well sell you just the SIM and keep the phone. Less waste and would be good for our environment too.

They send you a crappy phone with a SIM card. My friend got a go phone plan (he only wanted about 1000 texts and the normal plans didnt let you get that number). Then he bought a Samsung Blackjack II and just popped the SIM card in....worked fine.
