Arrrgh help me make the desktop icon stay still

How on earth do you get them to stay put? I have four mac formatted drives and three ntfs (from the dual boot) and i want them to stay like this screenshot. However on every reboot the play musical chairs and i'm not playing an music

 

I don't want to organise the desktop but name, date, kind or size. I want the icons for the drives to stay where I put them?

 

I've searched osxfaq, macosxhints & resexcellence but nowt.

Wow, you must have a LOT of drives, or you just have one massive HDD with lots of partitions!

 

Anyway, I'm not sure about this, but I think it organises the drives in the order it reads them...?

Solution:

 

1) From the desktop, right click each hard drive and select "make alias" (the equivalent to Window's "create shortcut")

 

2) Go to your desktop and click anywhere on it. Go to the Finder's preferences. Go to the "General" tab and deselect "Hard disks" from the list of items that appear on your desktop.

 

3) The hard drives won't be visible on the desktop, but their aliases will. The aliases can be freely moved around your desktop and won't reorganze after reboot.

 

Crude, but it works.

Ah thanks man, Anyway though to lose the alias arrors that are over the icons?

im not 100% positive.. but im sure the shortcut icon for it is just another icon.. in that case, you can take the original icon from the original hardrive and apply it to the shortcut, to replace the shortcut icon.. you can do this simple by...

 

click on get info for the shortcut hardrive, and the original hardrive, make sure both windows are open, then click on the icon on the original drive (the mini one at the top beside the name, not the big one below) and copy it (apple+c) and then click on the shortcut icon(again the small one at the top) and paste it (apple+v) and it should work..
