dadeef
go to quicktime, menubar show movie info to determine what codec you need. Download the universal DivX 6 codec on their website and download mediacentral if your movie has the AC3 codec.
bulls96
I have some .avi files too that couldnt run... some On7 or something codec, not yet supported by Macs from what i gather... Isnt there a one-time download page for all the codecs we will need?
iji oh
Try this link: http://perian.org/ Perian it a "swiss army knife" of Mac video codecs. I've been using it for about six months, and it's worked well for me.

trexplorer
I just don't get it ... Mac OS X is supposed to be the ultimate video and graphics platform, yet Apple refuses to support many analog and digital video formats. This is particularly problematic when trying to do analog video acquisition ... While true that a number of codecs are available as per the previous posts, you'll still find many AVI containers with formats that are completely unsuported, especially un-compressed or lossless formats. If you're unlucky like me ... And working with analog video capture, you may find out that the file format is "UYVY", which is an uncompressed format quite popular in Windows AVI containers and totally unsupported in OS X. Well not entirely ... Sort of ... It is supposedly the same as the Mac format called "2vuy". If your file format is "UYVY" (check info under Quicktime), Try doing a search for "FourCC codecs" or "Letters from the Ice Floe 20" for more info. Either way short of editing the hex code I have not found a solution for opening "UYVY" in Quicktime or other Mac Apps (iMovie, iDVD and other Apple apps rely on Quicktime for opening these files). Good news is VLC and mplayer OSX will recognize and open these and most any other files. VLC has some cool streaming and networking features, but can be unstable on intel macs and may not play the very rare file. Mplayer OS X has always played every file I've ever tried and is stable on intel Macs. So if you don't need Quicktime (i.e., you're not encoding, etc...), try one of these apps ... Cheers ...
