External Display Problems

Hello OSx86 world! I've been using the wonderful iATKOS 10.5.5 (upgraded to 10.5.6 with minimal problems) and have had very few problems that weren't my fault. Unfortunately one of these problems is my Intel GMA950 being unable to handle an external display with a resolution above 1600x1000.

The weird thing is that unlike many of the threads I've read so far my adapter will detect the resolutions, and try to set the resolutions, and my monitor's info panel under it's internal menu will even report that the correct resolution is set, but all I get on the screen is garbage that's somewhat colored like what should be on screen (i.e. desktop background, blue login, etc.). Moving the mouse over to that screen gives mixed results depending on the mouse's position on the screen, from a solid color below a certain point to the random garbage once it's moved back to the top and anywhere above that certain point.

The Mac info screen says the device ID is 0x27A2 (vendor is obviously 0x8086) and the monitor is an Acer AL2216W (which I've heard mixed stories about under OS X). Under Windows it works fine up to it's max resolution of 1680x1050. The built in screen works fine under OS X. I currently have the external screen set to 1400x1050 because it's the least squished/stretched resolution available, but it still bugs the hell out of me.

I'd like to explain what I mean when I say "garbage" just in case it helps diagnose my problem. It seems to me that the buffer for storing the screen's image is too small (say, 1440x1050) but is still being sent to the screen as if it were 1680x1050, so it would show one entire line and the start of the next line, then it would show the rest of the next line and the start of the 3rd line, etc.

Example:

AAAAAABB
BBBBCCCC
CCDDDDDD
EEEEEEAA
AAABBBBB

When it should be

AAAAAAAA
BBBBBBBB
CCCCCCCC
DDDDDDDD
EEEEEEEE
