New Leopard Install

My optical drive on my Mac Pro just won't open from the arrow up dash under keyboard command. I just reinstalled the OS Leopard and, already, the Disk Utility won't work. To be fair, this occurred ater I downloaded and installed some Nikon software. NikonViewNX. I went into safe mode and deleted the Nikon software. This has nothing to do with my optical drive. It is the stock drive on the Quad Xeon. I have purchased and have on hand Panasonic drives to replace it and add a second.

I am learning as I go and making mistakes and doing things correctly. The optical drive problem is something I just can't seem to resolve.

Should I just put in a Panasonic drive replacement, since I reinstalled, successfully, the Leopard OS or is there somehting I am missing? I have no problem gutting the box. I am not sure if there is some peculiarity with the software. I came over from PC a year ago and am not as confident with the Mac software as I would like to be. Any help. much appreciated.
