advice on my Vaio SZ1VP

Hi chaps,

You guys seem to know your stuff while I do not... I like OSX and used it at college alot while learning my photoshop.. could say I got used to the OS and much preferred it to using windows.

Now, I'm getting my Vaio delivered next week and am pretty stoked! I was shocked to find out that I could run OSX86 on it and pretty happy.. however I'm a little confused... Can I install OSX native Apps on this? I will need photoshop running as well as a few other things.. I wouldn't mind being able to install my copy of WoW on it either.. as it's apparently o.k on a macbook so I'll assume that this should run well my vaio SZ1VP... I was looking at the screenshots here and people seem to be running PS and a bunch of stuff...

Are these apps going to run at all.. and if they do with any kind of loss of performance?

Is this going to be an easy install (I've installed windows multiple times but never mac OS or Unix)?

I read alot about the device drivers such as wireless and sound / graphics not working too great.. are these easy fixes?

I dont know if this is a huge amount to ask, but I have tried browsing through the forum and wanted an honest opinion on whether this is a good idea or not. I'll probably be running this dual boot for the time being and I don't mind paying for a developer copy of OSX as long as I can ensure it will run ok.

Any advice would be appreciated and keep up the good work!

The trouble with your Vaio is that it comes with an nVidia card, which means no 3D acceleration whatsoever. You can get the beta driver from here. As with all ATI and nVidia drivers, you wil have to get used to the idea of waiting for proper drivers to be worked out, and not harass the people working on it.

If you want my opinion, I'd say go with a cheap notebook with base Intel video such as this one. Yes the onboard graphic is a dog, but at least it will give you QE and CI, and will tide you over till someone comes up with a working driver for either nVidia or ATI. (And who knows, that might never even happen. It is possible.)

Hi

I got my Vaio S3XP working sweet with the beta nvidia driver. The only thing that doesn't work is the Intel Wireless LAN card - which I was thinking of replacing with a Truemobile one (a 1450). Has anyone tried doing this? Would it fit?

This doesn't quite apply to the graphics card aspect of this, but how did you get your trackpad working? I'm using a VAIO s360 and 10.4.6. Both the trackpad and keyboard were working when a buddy first tried editing the kexts, but when we tried the Callisto drivers, both stopped working, and we managed to get the keyboard working, but not the trackpad. Any insights?

Ok..apologies for butting in on the subject. My trackpad just worked as it happens.

Anyway, I got a 1450. And yes it works...but I would recommend trying something different, as it hardly fits.

I had to cut out a little metal bolt that got in the way. Works great tho...

What install disk did you use for your S3XP? I used the JAS 10.4.6 disc, and keyboard and trackpad use were not functioning upon install.

Also, thats pretty cool you got the truemobile working, are you still able to control whether it turns on or off with the switch on the notebook?
