Well, after playing around with kexts for three months, getting every possible version, and making myself an ocean of kexts, I finally charted myself a way out, and came out with QE/CI and all the goodies of that as well.

First, thanks to slashack for all of his help, and his pack of kexts, which started me thinking about the idea of versions of kexts playing the most important role in getting everything up and running. Unfortunately, the only kext we will be using from his pack is Natit.

I am using 10.5.6 for this, I don't know if that will make a difference, but I hear that it will. Luckily 10.5.6 is easy to obtain these days.

1) Download my kext archive from here and save them somewhere. Your desktop is a good place to start.

2) Delete AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext: This kext interferes not with the x3100 kexts, but with the Natit kext. You can also delete the GMA950 kexts if you heart so desires, but it isn't required.

3) Delete all of your previous x3100 kexts (there should be 5, x3100.kext, x3100FB, x3100GL, x3100VA, and x3100GA)

4) if you currently do have Natit (or LaptopDisplay) installed, delete that as well.

5) Now if you restart and boot up again with -f, you should have just plain VESA graphics, at 1024x768. If you have anything else, that means there is still a kext loading somewhere that is affecting your display. Hunt it down, and delete it (preferably actually, back it up just so you can come back to this point)

6) Assuming you had just regular VESA graphics, fire up KextHelper b7 (it's all around the forums and comes with almost any distribution of osX86, and install the kexts I linked to above, but don't restart yet.

7) Now, if you are on a Dell like me, you can avoid the sleep trick (assuming you're on 10.5.6, which I believe are what these kexts are for) by DSDT patching. It is actually a fairly easy process, and you can find instructions for this on the forum as well. When you are done DSDT patching, you will have a dsdt.aml file in the root ( / ) of your Mac hard drive. I think some 10.5.6 discs even do this automatically for you if you select it. If you don't need to use the sleep trick, chances are you won't have to DSDT patch either, but I can't say for sure.

8) Go ahead and reboot and enjoy them transparent Finder bars :]

Is this only for this resolution?

I have a pc with dell 1707fp monitor.... 17" no-widescreen. I thinkk it cant get to 1680x1050!

You used retail or another installation??

Thanks!

i'm on retail, but any version should work.

and this set goes all the way up to 1680x1050 (probably higher too, but i don't have anything else to test that)

it isn't the monitor that matters, just the graphics chipset.

It is good that you have been able to offer a solution to this problematic GPU chipset on laptops especially........ :D

Aloha nitsujvg,

Is you screen sleeping and waking up ok? Are games with accelerated graphics playing ok?

Cheers

my screen sleeps / wakes fine.

and the only problem I have really noticed is that full screen flash is kind of laggy (such as hulu, etc), but i've read a lot of reviews saying that even real macbooks with this graphics chipset have choppy graphics, so I'm not sure whether it is my kext combination or not. later I may try messing around to see if I can fine tune it, but for now, it works well.

not worked for 1680x1050, only 1440x900.

kexts installed all the package,

AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext, AppleIntelGMAX3100GA.plugin, AppleIntelGMAX3100GLDriver.bundle, AppleIntelGMAX3100VADriver.bundle, Natit.kext

installed across the kext helper b7

any tips?

thats awesome :]

what specs are you running on your laptop? the hard thing about this dell was the resolution required different kexts than most people use.

if you're on 1680x1050, what kext versions do you use?

if you are only seeing the cursor, then the framebuffer is right, you just need to alter the drivers and other kexts. try playing with different versions - i have a feeling it has to do with the revision number, because a lot of people are saying that 144mb is their full graphics memory, but my revision shows 384 usually, so I think that is where the problem lies.

Hey everyone, I like the others are unable to DL the kext (broken link).

If you or Nitsujvg has them would you please send them to me or upload them again?

Thanks,

Shep (shep1342@hotmail.com)

This doesn't include any new kexts and I can't confirm 1680x1050 resolution support but it does enable QE/CI for me along with 1280x800 resolution. I haven't tried it on an external monitor yet but it's worth a try.

I just tried you installer. Unfortunately, it didn't help with 1680x1050 problem. We still need a working kext

Thanks for your help sixpackmac but unfortunatly it didn't work.... I still can't change the resolution from 1024x768. The 1280x800 would be great. I'm not that picky I don't need the 16xx, 1280 would be great with me :(

Shep,

Yours isn't working because you have a different revision ID than the standard X3100. Check this thread for more help.

Hey Everyone,

Nevermind... Wanted to atleast pass on what I did, now everything works...

Scratched out the Kalyway 10.5.2 install.. There was a lot to fix in regards to devices.. Nothing really worked.

So I thought to give iAtkos v7 a shot since I abandoned it because of video issue's. And well after getting the video issue's resolved, basically everything was working.. I've got 1280x1024x32 and I'm good to go with QE/CI check it out:

Intel GMA X3100:

 Chipset Model:	GMA X3100
 Type:	Display
 Bus:	Built-In
 VRAM (Total):	144 MB
 Vendor:	Intel (0x8086)

Display Connector:
 Status:	No Display Connected

Had some issue's with the Intel HD sound but got that resolved too.. I'm a HAPPY camper! Now I'll work on the other less important stuff!!

Thanks for all your input,

Shep
