KDE on OSX86

How to do it:

(Only works with 10.4.4/5/6 versions!)

You need to install X11 and Xcode tools , i´ve used Jas 10.4.3 DVD to install Xcode but you have other ways .

Download DarwinPorts last version (source),so get the tar.bz2 or the tar.gz

DarwinPorts 1.2.1

Extract the tar. ;open a Terminal and get inside the folder with " CD / " command , do an:

$./configure

then

$make

and to finish

$sudo make install

go inside the DarwinPorts-1.2.1 and open the text file "README_RELEASE1" where you can find the how to! or copy paste this to the terminal:

#export PATH=/opt/local/bin:$PATH

enter

#port sync

enter

#port selfupdate

enter

and to finish

#port install kdebase3

it takes 4 hours or more to build KDE!

After finishing open X11 and open the folder "/opt/local/bin/" with Finder , double click " kdeinit " and " kdesktop " after.

To stop KDE double click " kdeinit_shutdown "

note that to get to the applications on KDE you should look for the "run command" app rightclicking your mouse then type "konqueror" on it!

It´s hardwork i know but you can manage to install and run some games (kdegames3) finally without QE/CI working!

Sound and Video applications do not install, that means there´s no sound on KDE and the Taskbar doesn´t comme(On a "PC" Mac!) up but you have Mac taskbar for using all the time.

you may have to type

#export PATH=/opt/local/bin:$PATH

everytime you start the terminal to install some port!

then do an

#port list

to see what is available.

Have fun.

Ok, so, does this make like a whole OS that runs in OSX? And if you have Networking/Audio problems in OSX, will you have the problems in KDE? Right now im downloding X11 and Xcode. X11 is done...but Xcode is like 915 MB! Is that right? Did you use 2.3? Also, X11 was only 43 MB, is that right?

@harshboy, if you are using a real mac OR if you have a friend that has the intel osx install dvds, then all of those tools are on there.

sure its awesome to have KDE and Aqua side by side, (ive never used kde or linux all too much) but what is the point other than its fun and something to do?

Well... I must say this has turned out to be a pretty neat hack. I have been able to get pretty much everything in KDE to work under X11 and 10.4.5. Pretty damn cool. Check it out...

Try it yourselves if you wanna wow all your .nix buds...

Do the KDE file managers work under OS X?

I LOVE KDE and LOVE Konqueror, it would be totally awesome to get them running on OS X. I vastly prefer KDE to Aqua... Aqua is just too... ummm... user friendly... I want something that has power AND style - which KDE TOTALLY fits the bill...

KDE apps. They rock.

Just don't put kicker on the left or the right. Wish I could put it on the left... without all the extra padding that shouldn't be there.

Also, if you install kde from fink instead of darwinports ('fink install bundle-kde-ssl'), disable icons in the KDE control center; you won't see your OS X desktop otherwise! (on the plus side, I do think sound works, but I'd have to whip out my MacBook to make sure)

Well, so does OS X for that matter... it's why I use OS X instead of Linux. Yes, you can use Konqueror.

But you can also install baghira if you use fink and have KDE startlingly Aqualike (look at the lovely guides on the site)! A point of contention however: Aqua is the visual style of OS X. Not its user interface.

KDE rocks, but how did u get the menu to come. It never came in mine. Also the time it takes to install depends on your net conn speed too. It needs to DL some packages. Actual Compilation takes max 30 Mins. But i think its more like 15 Mins. On my 256kbps, it took around 4 Hrs.

Hi ppl.

Sorry for not sayin' a word all this time but i only found this today.

It's nice to know someone tried it.

I Am Curious to know if someone with a real Mac could compile mplayer and about the sound ...

Thanks

About the menu, well, the taskbar doesn't show up ,a least with an PC MAC!So the only way is to call konqueror and get all the apps with it.

I posted here too: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=19715

But if you enter "http://kde.opendarwin.org/" in the finder when you click on "go" in the menu and "connect to server" it only takes 1.5 hours depending on your connection to install KDE integrated apps for OS X. notice in this pic how the Xserver is not running and the Konqueror icon is in the dock:
