Hey guys I am fairly new to the hackintosh world, however not new to computers, hardware etc. I have been doing some research over the past weeks and have come up with a build I would like to get feedback on. For this rig I'm looking to do some moderate video editing, and normal day to day programing, etc.

Essentially I am interested in having final cut pro work, wireless, sound, video etc.. Oh the dreamm!!

This is the build I have come up with, I will be ordering soon, so anything you think I may be forgetting cable wise to changing out a processor or video card due to incompatibility would greatly be appreciated... I'm looking to keep this system under 1200, since I'm a broke college kid living in Nyc

If you think that some of this is overkill for what i'm trying to do please tell me. A

hi nyufilm88,

everything you listed looks compatible, there shouldn't be any problems.

but those new i7 processors are so damn expensive, as well as the motherboards that accompany them - if you need your machine to do DV editing, then you don't need i7. You can find a Q-series intel quad-core and a p45 mobo for a fraction of that money - no need for pricey ddr3 memory as well. i am an editor, so i know what i'm saying.

my machine runs on q6600 @ 3ghz with 4gb ram and i can comfortably work with either final cut, avid media composer, or premiere cs4.

i have a radeon HD 3870 with 512mb ram and i am very happy with it. dual displays work as they should.

my radeon is made by Gigabyte - you should check the situation here on IM with Sapphire radeons, cause not all 3870 work with same drivers.

welcome to the osx86 world

Hey I was going to post a very similar topic.

It's funny cause, if you think about it a designer/movie editor using a windows machine now has the following options:

1 - use vista or windows 7 for 64bit support and more than 4gb ram ( vista is horrible, useless)

2 - use linux with no support for adobe's suite (useless again)

3 - change components for osx compatibility to run full 64bit mode with brilliant OS that's better than windows xp & vista by far. (seems like a logical reason)

What motherboard do you have Zarac? I'm a graphic designer myself and so I'm interested in buying the q660 like you said, however I do hope it's faster than my amd 4200 with 2gb ram.

What ram do you have and/or suggest to go with this intel setup?

Thanks.

Mine is Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L, which is a bit old now, so i would recommend any of the GA-(E)P45 ones (Gigabyte, of course.)

They are completely osx86 compatible and lots of people already use them for Mac OS X, so it's easy to get "support."

What ram do you have and/or suggest to go with this intel setup?

Thanks.

I'm using 4 Kingston Mars 1066MHz 1GB sticks. I had to give them just a bit more power in BIOS because they wouldn't work @1066 SPD (even the manufacturer noted this and suggested a minimal power boost).

Now its perfect.

The system is incredibly responsive.

I have overclocked q6600 from 2.4 to 3.0 GHz (from 266MHz to 333MHz FSB) - no stability issues.

My system is on a GPT formated drive, booting Chameleon 2.0RC1 from EFI partition, and using Voodoo 9.5.0 kernel (it gives me full S3 sleep when combined with OpenHaltRestart.kext)

I hope that covers it.

Right, I'm fairly new too so just to cover a few things..

Are we really talking full 64bit native support for osx? If so, then any 64bit processor from windows xp will be much faster using this osx as it supports 64bit, right?

Does OSX use their own motherboards in their machines then? Or are they based on gigabyte motherboards due to their appearingly good compatibility?

I don't really want to have to hack into much to get osx working so I'm presuming there are now some mature setup dvd images which install osx hassle-free if you have the right components? (I was here in the old days and it was a doddle back then)

What's this "S3 sleep" & "OpenHaltRestart.kext" (I'm being lazy now)

Thanks again.

Actually, Leopard itself isn't fully 64-bit os. Though the kernel support some 64bit instructions, basically it is 32bit. You can use more than 4GB ram, but no math calculations in 64bit space.

Does OSX use their own motherboards in their machines then? Or are they based on gigabyte motherboards due to their appearingly good compatibility?

Apple uses Intel motherboards with server chipsets: 5000x and 5500x (different than regular nonApple models because they support EFI and do not have BIOS.)

Gigabyte motherboards use consumer type chipsets and they are indeed very compatible.

My suggestion is first to install one of the modified distribustions (IPC would be my choice), and learn what hacks you need to get it all working. Then, do a retail EFI install (munky way), because that way you can install all system updates from Apple and not worry about something breaking your install.

What's this "S3 sleep" & "OpenHaltRestart.kext" (I'm being lazy now)

Thanks again.

S3 (suspend-to-RAM) is one of the standby modes. Check THIS link to learn about standby modes.

OpenHaltRestart.kext is a kernel extension made by Psystar Co. (at least they say so) and it deals with problems turning off, restarting and standing by the OSX86 machine.

Hope I helped.

Thanks a lot for your reply, that has cleared up a lot.

However, I don't quite understand why osx would not be full 64bit? This is a great shame as still an operating system is unable to fully develop their OS for hardware capable of quicker speeds.

The adobe suite cs4 I have read is 64bit supported on windows and not mac. What a downer! Looks like I'll have to be using vista to get the quickest speeds for photoshop and whatnot.

I wonder when osx is going to be made into fully supporting 64bit processors.

Zarc thanks for all the input,

I switched some items out since I got some really good feedback..

I would like to have 8gb of ram for this system,(whatever kind is best for overclocking) what do you recommend will work with my setup? I would like to Oc the processor like you did to around 3.0 did you have to use any aftermarket processor coolers or cpu coolers for that? Do you think my setup will need one?

I'm thinking that I would like to have my applications saved on a separate hd like the

I'm looking in to the video card I selected today, if anyone sees any compatibility issues b4 I post please let me know. .Thanks

Almost any DDR2 memory will do, but you might want to check Gigabyte's Memory Support List for this mobo.

I would like to Oc the processor like you did to around 3.0 did you have to use any aftermarket processor coolers or cpu coolers for that? Do you think my setup will need one?

To overclock q6600 at 3Ghz you don't have to raise voltage to the processor, only raise the FSB speed. That way it doesn't get much hotter than usual.

I'm using stock cooler that came with my q6600.

I'm thinking that I would like to have my applications saved on a separate hd like the

Great choice - it is in performance range of nVidia 8800 GTS, no problems in OSX86 since Megadolon framebuffer came out.

Other components you listed are supported as they don't need separate drivers in OSX.

I posted a while ago, basically i want to build a core i7 build using mATX DFI Lan party X58 Mobo. I have read some where that some one used this for their hackintosh using Digital-dreamers build. If any of the experts out there can give some comments on this build and let me know wether there are any red lights before i order my parts. This is going to be overclocked to maybe 3.5Ghz in a small Thermaltake Lanbox!! That's gotta be a pretty good build right? The PSU has to be taken out and the fan direction has to be reversed so that it is blowing down to the MOBO so that i won't fight the air flow of the heatsink fan. I'm using a Modular PSU so wiring will be a little easier in this small Box. The wireless card according to this forum works OOB.I also want to ask which is the easiest high performance graphic card to install gfore 9600 gt or ati 3870? any other suggestions? I plan to install using bootloader 132 method. here are the parts.

CASE:Thermaltake Lanbox

CPU:Intel Core i7 Nehalem 2.66Ghz

MOBO:Dfi Lanparty Jr x58-t3h6 lga 1366 mATX

RAM:2xCorsair XMS3 (3x2Gb) 240 Pin ddr3 sdram

PSU:ENERMAX INFINITY EIN720AWT 720W ATX12V

ThermalCompound:Artic Silver Thermal Compound

LCD Touchscreen embedded:Thermaltake A2413 Lcd Monitor 7 Inch

HD:2XSeagate Baracuda 7200Rpm 32Mb Cache 3Gb/s 1TB SATA

Wireless:Asus WL-138g V2 IEEE 802.11b/g PCI

GFXMSI RX3870X2-T2D1G OC Radeon HD 3870 X2 1GB 512-bit (256-bit x 2) GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card

PLs Let me know for better suggestions if any. For musicians out there, with the embedded touch screen and the handle bar on the CPU u wouldn't need to bring a monitor. Actually i have figured out a way to use my iphone as a screen for the computer and u can change ur keyboard patches with ur iphone touchscreen while on a live gig!! email or pm me if you want more info about that. I know sound card doesn't work but i plan to use a external firewire apogee duet sound card for live gigs and RME fireface 400 for studio work at home. Total cost for this build came up to $1672. Same specs on Apple store for a mac pro is $5-6k!!! Also let me know wether 720 watts will be enough. thanks

Thanks Zarac,

I'm planning on ordering all of this tonight, after I select a wireless lan card that will work.

I went with all your suggestions except the second Raptor drive, since I can't afford it. I found some ddr2 (800) ram which had good reviews on New Egg, and is supposed to be compatible with my mob, also good for hitting a 3.0 or 3.2 oc. I'm just hoping that I am not forgetting anything minor, which I will need for the build.. Thanks for all the help Zarac, and let me know if you think I'm forgetting anything.

Everything look nice, and probably is much cheaper than the original configuration.

Concerning the Raptor, i wasn't clear - i would get only one and use it as a system drive w/apps. Another drive would be something like your 640.

I just realized that one of the most productive developers here (weaksauce) has the identical configuration.

His blog has an entry on Sapphire 3870. Check it out.

EDIT: here's a link to weaksauce's topic here on IM about retail install on that board

I know this is probably a dumb question that will make me sound like i have no idea what im doing but its the only thing i cant figure out. I am into video editing, as far as the motherboard fitting the casing, how did u manage getting the usb in the right area to where it fit the casing did you have to get a certain case to match a certain board or what? and can you get 6pin firewire on one of those boards or just 4 pin? I am seeking a core i7 like the first poster as i work with HDV. Please let me know the answer to my very stupid question. Thanks.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by this, but generic motherboards come in a certain number of set sizes

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_form_factor

ATX being the most common. So as long as it is a type that fits the case and it should say what form factors the case will take, it shouldn't be an issue. Typically they come with a little metal board that has holes for the external connectors, that goes in a "window" in the back of the case where the mother board is mounted.

and can you get 6pin firewire on one of those boards or just 4 pin? I am seeking a core i7 like the first poster as i work with HDV. Please let me know the answer to my very stupid question. Thanks.

You can get firewire on the MB, but it isn't as common with PCs, so you'll need to look for one that has it. However, the built in Firewire on the MB are not always usable. So you may need to get a PCI or PCIe expansion card with Firewire. Fortunately AFAIK, most of them will work just fine and quite possibly without an additional drivers.

The Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 is a very compatable MB and almost pain free to get running SL, using this guide. It has one FW connector, but I'm not sure if it's 4 or 6 pin.

It's one drawback is that it isn't cheap, but I think that's outweighed by it's ease of setup.

Hi

I'm glad I came across this thread as I'm thinking of building a new PC to run OS X SL. Initially I wanted to get a MBP but since there is no support in the area I live I decided that it's not worth it. In addition I was a bit disappointed that there is no MBP with Core i7.

Well basically I'd like to build a Core i7 920 machine and I guess I could get my hands on the gigabyte mobo. Is there a website where i can find the other piece of hardware to go along? I've been reading up a bit on hackintosh lately and it seems I'll need a real macbook to run a terminal session during installation of OS X. I don't have this option. Can anybody advise me?

For the record, I used the eVGA x58 sli le motherboard which was on sale for $209.99 and picked up my i7 920 processor from microcenter for $199 on sale (like 100 bucks cheaper than all the online places I looked at during the time).

I installed iAtkos v7 with the nforce kext from my laptops build (mcp67) and it still worked like a charm. I had to do the busratio=20 and cpus=1 thing during the install but after that it was smooth sailing. I was even able to install 10.5.8 from Apple straight up without any issues with my hardware and everything so far seems to be working outside of it not recognizing my cores quite right... I'll figure that one out.

But if this is any indicator of performance, my windows 7 x64 build for playing games and what not in WoW gives me like 30~40 fps in Dalaran where as under Mac OSX i'm getting 70~80. Hmmm. I'm using an 8800 GTX also.

Do you think it is enough to edit uncompressed DV in HD?

i am not sure i understand what you're asking.

DV is compressed by default, and it is a standard definition (SD) format.

HDV is also compressed, but it's a high definition (HD) format.

you won't have any problems with these on this kind of computer (even on a much less powerful one.)

if you plan to edit uncompressed formats, you should make sure you have disks that are fast enough.

SD should not be a problem, as the data rate for a single uncompressed stream varies between 20 and 27 MB per/sec.

uncompressed HD is another story. data rates go up to 237 MB per/sec (10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 60i RGB 4:4:4). that is for one stram only.

so if you want to comfortably edit uncompressed HD you need something in the vicinity of 600 MB/s throughput.

cpu will manage all these just fine, but if you start applying video effects to uncompressed HD material it will choke.

my recommendation is getting a dedicated video card like blackmagic or aja - it will take over most of the work away from the cpu (if you use its codec)

i hope i answered your question.

Hey guys a bit of topic here but I have a question about cpu OC and increasing fsb.

I have a GA EP45-DS3 mobo Q6600 cpu (run it at stock speed), 8 gig mixed memory 3*2 apacer (I think :( ) and 1*2 kingston, two pcie 7300 gs 512 mb videocards, 7300 rpm hardrives etc etc. I´ve forgot the speed of my apacer memory but I guess it´s 667 Mhz, the kingston is 800 Mhz. This is a bit too slow for what I need for what I want to be able to do today. My hack runs just fine in all aspects regarding all I´ve used it for so far (make music with Logic etc etc normal stuff) but lately I´ve been looking in to webcasting.

It´s funny though cause everything Apple in terms of software pretty much always seem work but softs like Wirecast and other softs alike seems to be a bit buggy on a hackmac. The latest software for webcasting I´ve tested is Camtwist which is a free soft and as far as I can see just as good as the somewhat overpriced Wirecast. I personally think my gear would be able cut it but I´m thinking since working with video is a bit harder on the hardware compared to sound should I

1. get in to OCing and get faster memory and stay with what I have

2. put together a new hack and go for the i7 gear

If I stick with what I have and get 1200 Mhz or 1066 and OC how the heck much better would my hack perform compared to no OCing and my memory running 667 Mhz. Lets say I try to figure out how to OC my Q6600 to 3Ghz and get memory at least 1066 Mhz would I gain say 35% performance?

I mean would it be worth it, memory is not exactly free either? It certainly would be cheaper than build a new i7 based hack but then again an i7 build would really kick my old hacks but big time I know that.

I just want to be able to do a decent web tv show so it´s no fancy stuff I want to do. I´ve already managed to broadcast live with good sound with the hack I have when I was test recording stuff in Logic, so broadcast sound online live + just a video cam feed is no problem at all.

Man this web tv broadcasting thing is really cool you should check it out guys.

I know people might think my videocards would be the first I should look in to but these are silent ones and capable of what I need them for even with video so they stay :D .

Any idéas would be great and if I go for faster memory I´d need input on how to OC and stuff.

Thanks

Edit: I have both FC and FC express working on my hack with the configuration it has today.

Hey everyone.

Im new to the hackintosh world, and almost clueless as to how certain specifications can benefit certain applications (eg. 3.0GHz processors compared to 2.4GHz, etc.). I'd be using my hackintosh mainly to record music using applications such as pro tools and logic pro. The requirements for the programs can be found for:

Pro Tools: http://shop.avid.com/store/product.do?prod...324083762045600

Logic 8: http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/specs/

Other than that, I might also use adobe CS4 products and MS word/excel, but thats about it.

Could anyone give me some advice on what motherboards/processors, harddrives (I would like to have 2, 1 for applications/1 for storing files), and anything else I should look into? I'll probably only get 4GB of RAM, so anything thats compatible with that is fine. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money here; I'm looking for something that will work with these programs without a doubt, but that's cheap. Obviously I don't want to waste money on a piece of garbage, but again, I have a tight budget. Thanks for all of your help in advance!

Hello Zarac,

You seem be a professional editor like me.

I'm brazilian, I live in São Paulo, I've been editor about 22 years.

Well, I'm enchanted with "Hackintosh" idea.

I have some questions to you, I'm trying convince a American Video Producer friend that "Hackintosh" can be fantastic.

Issues:

-Installation Method

-Maintenance

-No problems in the Future

-Configuration

-Performance x Price

-Installation Method

I bought already a device called Efix (I don't know if I can say this name here), like you said, "do a retail EFI install (munky way), because that way you can install all system updates from Apple and not worry about something breaking your install".

It seems not difficult to do.

There is a Hardware Compatible List

-Maintenance

I do by myself the software maintenance in my Apple machines. I would like continuing with it.

QUESTION: I think with this method I'll be able to do:

-Repair Permissions

–Genius Drive (or similar) Defragment and Repair Disk (runnig system from the Original Apple Install Dvd, for example)

-No problems in the Future

How much time people have been professionally work with "Hackintosh" machines ? Is it consolidate already? Not surprises in the dead-line?

-Configuration

I planned that:

CASE: Coolmaster ATX ($200,00) (Aluminum)

CPU: INTEL CORE I7-960 3.20 GHz (Quad) ($600,00)

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 ($340,00)

RAM: Corsair XMS3 6GB (6X2) DDR3 2GB 1600 MHz 3 Channel ($380,00)

PSU: Ultra X4 1050 Watt ($230,00)

HD: 2 Hitashi Deskstar HD 2TB 7200 32 MB Sata 3G ($340,00)

VIDEO CARD: GeForce GTX 285 / 1 Gb GDDR3 ($390,00)

WIRELESS: not sure

NETWORK: not sure

BLUETOOTH: not sure

FIREWIRE 800 PCI ADAPTER: not sure

BLURAY LG ($180,00)

It will be about US$ 2800,00

-I work with Final Cut Pro HDV or Full Hd Apple ProRes 4444 (or just Apple ProRes HQ, or even Apple ProRes 422) – HD compressed

-a lot of After Effects CS4 (Particles, motion blur, big comps)

-Color

-Soundtrack Pro

-Compressor

-Dvd Studio Pro

-I want Bluray (in Toast Titanium or Encore CS4)

-Performance x Price

I believe that I can take Geekbench (you know this software?) Score about 15.000. My American friend says that is just mathematic, doesn’t mean that FCP will fly like an original Apple one.

In March (about 2 weeks) Apple will release new Hexa core Mac Pro Gulftown. I'll take a decision. I'm not rich, I'll pay this equipment share by 10 times. I have work here, I need a good machine.

I want buy to: Matrox MXO2 Le (Desktop) to monitoring HD in regular LCD and simultaneously in a Sony PVM 14" Component SD Monitor (to color grade) (US$ 1000,00)

I'm not sure that it will work ok with "Hachintosh".

I have just one shot.

If is possible answer. Not hurry.

In Brasil we say, grande abraço, (big hug), thank you very much,

Momi.

Hello,

This is my first post in insanelymac.com.

I've been a PC user my entire life but would like to switch to MACs, without having to pay such a high price tag. For this reason, I would like to build a Hackintosh like the rest of you have done.

I've spend 20-30 hours already reading various forums, website, YouTube videos, the OSx86 wiki and reading about the compatible hardware for version 10.6 of Snow Leopard.

I've come up with a list of hardware (below) that I'd like to use, and would appreciate your help and feedback in regards to wheather or not it seems appropriate.

I mainly use my comptuer for WEB/GRAPHIC designs, and probably don't need an Intel core i7 processor for my needs, but don't mind getting one now.

The full hareware list with prices & links for my Hackintosh is in a PUBLIC Google Docs file here:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Ag...90dlE&hl=en

Here's the summary:

Item Name/Brand/Model #/Description/Price

• PC Case Cooler Master Cooler Master Elite 330 Black ATXRC-330-KKN1-GP Cooler Master Elite 330 Black ATX $39.81

• Hard Drive Western Digital WD5001AALS 500 GB SATA OEM Desktop Hard Drive $64.82

• CD-ROM Drive Lite-On LightScribe 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive IHAS424-98 - Retail (Black) $31.99

• Processor Intel BX80601930 Intel Core i7 Processor i7-930 2.80GHz 8 MB LGA1366 CPU $285

• Processor Cooling Fan Included with i7 CPU

• Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 $268.99

• Memory Modules Corsair TR3X6G1600C9 XMS3 6 GB 3 X 2 GB PC3-12800 1600MHz 240-Pin $169

• Power Supply Unit (PSU) Corsair CMPSU-650TX Corsair TX650W Power Supply $99.99

• Video Card BFG BFGE98512GTOCE BFG Tech BFGE98512GTOCE GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card $89.99

• Operating System Apple Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Original DVD $25

I'm considering following these instructions, but I'm open to suggestions on the EASIEST way to build a working Hackintosh.

Possible Instructions to follow:

• LifeHacker: How to build a hackintosh from Start to finish. Link Here

(High resolution) with detail instruction on video comments (by the creator)

I have no problem in editing BIOS setup, creating ISO files for DVDs or USB thumb drives. But don't have any experience in editing much else. Would this be too complicated for me to do? (there seems to be lots of support, and easy to use Boot loaders, like EFI).

hope someone out there reads this

Thanks

Jaime
