I've been working on a site - www.outer-empires.com - over the past little while and would appreciate it if anyone could review it and let me know what you think I could do to make it better.

Quite good. Your color palette fits. A prominent button attracts current or potential players to play the game. Enough info.
So far so good.
You should make your menu a bit bigger. It may really stand out and activate a visitor to use it.
Also it helps the search engines and your visitors to have clean url's. A favicon is also missing.
