IRC Channel?

 I seriously have to ask a question.

What is the point of the IRC channel?

I mean seriously? I've watched this channel from a user standpoint for almost 2 weeks now. In that time, I've seen VERY few conversations take place... MANY MANY MANY questions asked, and most of the responses end up "go check the web forum," or "that's why you need to run a HACKINTOSH".

I've BEEN IN this forum asking people for help, and was met with bitterness, and childish demeanors.

So. What is the point of an IRC channel to help people if no one speaks?

I mean really.... I'm currently SITTING in the channel... asked 20 minutes ago, a simple question... but no one has responded. 28 people in the room, including myself, and NO ONE IS PAYING ATTENTION?

What's the point of an IRC forum? Can someone please explain this to me?

Whats your nick silicon.wolf? I spend vast amounts of time in there & have done since the beginning..

Periodically it gets full of people with stupid questions being answered by people with little more knowledge than themselves, but mostly it is orderly, friendly & helpful..

If there were only 28 people in the room, then you were probably victim of last nights little server hiccup, normally there are at least twice that many in there.

frankly, a lot of people do the following: arrive, say "please help me" without specifying what they need help with, sit around for 2 minutes then leave in disgust.

Its a community, that is not how it works. everyone in there is there out of their own free will, no one has a duty to provide support, but we do, to the best of our ability..

if you have a legitimate question, hang around a bit, say hi, see what other chat is going on, then ask. If anyone has an answer, believe me, they will speak up.

Just because no-one answered doesn't mean no-one was paying attention - just that no one was able to help. As Hagar says the channel (and the forum) is a community of users who help each other out when able. Joining the channel does not give you an inherent right to have your question answered - it's not as if we're charging for access :D

What was your question anyway? The same questions frequently get asked by people who have been too lazy to investigate and research their own problem before asking for the solution on the forum and it's these sort of questions that members treat with contempt. If you had a legitimate question then post it again - or bump the topic if you like - and maybe someone who didn't see it before will help you.

Whining threads don't help anyone.

Something else that's not very constructive, is calling someone lazy, before you know anything about them.

I have read over much of the forums, and have NOT found an answer to the questions I have about trying to get 10.4.6 to install on my system.

I HAVE PICKED THROUGH THE FORUM. I CAN READ, AND I'M QUITE CAPABLE OF IT, AND DO IT BEFORE ASKING STUPID QUESTIONS.

Not that this matters much to the man that can't get his name spelled any type of normally.

i understand that irc channels are made up of lots of users in there on their free time to try and help those areound them. But... I'll post you my chat log. I have been in this room more than 24 hours now, and other than my question. "Can anyone help me install 10.4.??, I'm having some boot problems, and the wiki's arn't helping"... I was met a lot of users leaving... a lot comming in... the net split Hagar talked a bout... and then more users leaving/comming in... To further PROVE MY POINT. Another user came in asking about trying to do something else, and was flat ignored. No one said a word to him.

Honestly? is this what I can expect from this community? As one of it's newest members (at leat to this forum/wiki/channel)... I'm not real willing to put forth the effor that I've already extended offers of help on for this forum, because I thought it was a worth while place to be. But if I'm going to get to be on my own to figure this stuff out (as I was before I found this forum). I can finish it just fine on my own, and keep that knowledge to myself, as so many others seem to see fit to do.

btw: if you're having a problem figuring out my irc name. maybe reading would be a good thing for you to look into.

I didn' call you lazy - i stated that "the same questions frequently get asked by people who have been too lazy to investigate" and qualified my statement by telling you to repost or bump if the question was legitimate. Since you aparently consider your question to be legitmate then why not follow my advice instead of just complaining and attacking Hagar who offered you his help. This thread serves no purpose other than to attack the members of this community.
